Sears customers wonder how to get warranty help

Do you have any appliances, tools, car batteries, or tires from Sears?

Check around: chances are that you, or your parents, probably do, especially if they ever bought Kenmore branded appliances.

Unfortunately, more and more former Sears customers are discovering this year that getting warranty help is getting tricky, with so many stores now closed.

Sears Auto Center long gone

Terri Shiplett is afraid to drive her car, because the tire tread is almost gone.

"The tread has worn off here," she said pointing to her front tires.

With a 30,000 mile treadwear warranty on the tires with just 19,000 miles on them, she headed to the Sears Auto Center where she bought them, at the Tri-County Mall in Cincinnati.

But the auto center was long closed, along with all the others nearby.

"There is no Sears within a 50 mile radius of Cincinnati, at least automotive," Shiplett said.

The nearest Auto Centers we found were north of Columbus, Ohio and in Huntington West Virginia, a two hour plus drive.

She called Sears customer service, but says she was just referred to a tire distributor. "I sent a dozen emails (to the tire distributor) and no one replied," Shiplett said.

Where to turn for help

But it's not just auto center customers with tire and battery issues having problems.

Anyone who has bought a lawnmower or appliance the past few years could potentially have a warranty issue, and wonder where to turn for help

"That's the thing," Shiplett said. "My battery is a Sears battery. There's people with Craftsman tools that are guaranteed"

Last month, we spoke with Gary Galloway, who also found no store within 50 miles to exchange a Craftsman wrench.

"You have to drive about an hour to get a tool replaced," he said.

So we checked with Sears, where a spokeswoman told us the company is still servicing all warranties, if you email or call Sears national customer service.

Their number is (800) 349-4358.

  • Tire warranties will be honored at authorized tire centers that sell the same brand.
  • Craftsman tools and mowers can be repaired or exchanged at Lowe's. A spokewoman told us Lowe’s honors all Craftsman lifetime warranty products and provides repair services for outdoor power equipment. For questions on the status of your Craftsman product warranty, call the customer care line at 888-331-4569.
  • Kenmore appliances can be serviced by any authorized Kenmore repair company.

Terri Shiplett, though, laments the loss of what had been America's store.

"It's depressing," she said.

Sears says it will try to help with Shiplett's tires, though if the store determines it was due to bad alignment, the premature wear may not be covered under warranty.

As always, don't waste your money.

Confession: I shop for practically everything online. I'm an Amazon Prime junkie in particular. But I've never even tried to buy tires online, because I wouldn't know what to do next.

Amazon and Sears now have an answer for that. Buy tires on Amazon -- any brand -- and you'll now get the option to install them at a Sears Auto Center.

The feature's already live; check out my screenshot.

sears-auto-center-amazon-tires

After you select the number of tires you want, just look for the Get Professional Tire Installation section and press the Select a service option button. (That's how it works on a desktop browser, anyhow.)

An Amazon rep tells CNET that this is what happens afterward: "Customers schedule an appointment for installation during checkout, the tires arrive to the service provider and customers shows up at the time of their appointment to have them installed." Sounds pretty straightforward.

To start, Ship-To-Store will only work at 47 Sears Auto Centers scattered across Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Washington, but Sears says the program will expand to all the 400+ Sears Auto Centers across the country.

Note that you'll still have to pay to get your tires installed. So maybe "taking them to a tire install shop" was the answer to my original question. But this way, you won't have to transport four cumbersome tires from your house to your installer, and you can pay for everything on the spot.

Best cheap tire services: Wal-Mart, Sam's, Costco or Sears?

When a set of tires is the only thing connecting your vehicle to the road, you surely want to invest in dependable, quality tires. While shopping around for the best deal on tire prices, there are several other factors to consider, such as tire longevity, grip, treading and overall performance. Equally important are the components of the tire installation package available with your purchase. Cheapism.com compared the major national tire service places.

Does the vendor include an installation fee in the price of the tire or as an add-on? If you buy the tires online, how much does delivery cost and how much more will you shell out at the local auto shop for mounting? You’ll want to note offers for routine tire inflation, multi-point and alignment checks, flat repairs, balancing and rotation, disposal fees (for the old tires), and warranty (based on mileage, road hazards or manufacturer’s defects).

We’ve done the basic homework for you by comparing the packages offered by four of the largest mass-merchandise retailers. We found that the best package comes from Sam’s Club, followed by Costco, Walmart, and finally, Sears.

Sam's Club sits at the top of the heap for the rich array of included services, coupled with attractive pricing. Club members can buy a tire installation package for $15 per tire. The deal includes mounting/balancing, new valve stems, lifetime balancing and tire rotation, flat repair, waste tire disposal and road hazard protection. If your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TMPS), you’ll also get free resets when the tires are being serviced. But the star attraction of Sam’s Club tire installation package, and a key reason for its No. 1 ranking, is the 24/7 roadside tire-change service available for three years after the date of purchase.

Costco, another membership club, is parked a spot behind, owing to a slightly less expansive set of package components. Members can buy tires at a Costco location or online and have them shipped to a local store (shipping and handling costs included). The installation package is priced at $15 per tire and includes mounting, new rubber valve stems, nitrogen tire inflation (instead of compressed air), and old tire disposal. Additionally, buyers are entitled to rotations over the tire’s lifetime, inflation and pressure checks, flat repairs and a road hazard warranty.

Despite the low installation fee at Walmart — $12 per tire — the package lands in third place. The deal is less generous than that offered by its two top rivals. It includes mounting, valve stems, and lifetime balance and rotation after every 7,500 miles, plus a lug re-torque after the first 50 miles. Another $10 per tire buys the road hazard warranty. A limited warranty for treadwear is also available for certain tires.

Tire purchases at Sears can be paired with an installation package costing $18.49 per tire. This deal lags the others on price and is far less inclusive, as it covers just mounting, new valve stems, lifetime balancing and tire rotation, and multi-point inspection. Brake evaluation and road hazard warranty can be added at additional cost.

None of these tire installation packages includes alignment checks and all are subject to sales tax and state environmental fees; at Walmart and Sears, a tire disposal fee also is assessed.

If you don’t live near any of the retailers discussed above, check online discount vendors. Discount Tire Direct offers free shipping with rebate specials and discounts on select brands. Tire Buyer is associated with more than 8,000 tire installation shops. And Tire Rack offers free shipping and connections to thousands of installers.

Current Issue

Sears Auto Center has expanded its tire installation program with Amazon.com. The service is available nationwide.

In May Sears announced it would be the first installation partner for Amazon customers who bought any brand of tires. The initial launch covered eight metro markets and included 47 Sears Auto Center locations. Now, Sears stores in all 50 states offer tire installation and balancing for Amazon shoppers. The expanded Amazon partnership comes a week after Sears announced it would shutter another 46 Kmart and Sears stores in the U.S. Of those stores, 25 also have Sears Auto Center locations that will close. (As of May 5, 2018, there were 529 Sears stores in the U.S., but they don't all have auto centers.)

In July Monro Inc. said it had signed up to install tires for Amazon, as well. It's starting in the Baltimore market, but will extend the service to all of its stores in 27 states.

"The response from Amazon customers around this program has been extremely positive," says Mike McCarthy, vice president and general manager of Sears Automotive. "Our competitive bundled price for tire installation, which includes the installation of the tire, wheel balancing, valve stem or tire pressure monitor rebuild kit and the tire disposal fee is resonating with these customers. We're thrilled to extend this valuable service across even more areas and into hundreds of additional stores.

"Providing excellent auto service, such as fast installation and free Performance Snapshot evaluations, is at the core of our business and partnerships. By working with Amazon, we're proud to further meet and surpass that commitment, thanks to the ease and convenience of their program."

Amazon customers select their tires, then can choose the nearest Sears Auto Center and their preferred date and time for the tire installation. Sears Auto Center then contacts them to confirm their appointment.

About the DieHard brand
Introduced in 1967, Sears designed the original DieHard automotive battery to produce 35 percent more usable starting power than other similar batteries. Featuring a revolutionary tough, thin-walled case of translucent polypropylene plastic, which was 50 percent thinner than conventional black rubber-type battery enclosures, the design's extra room meant bigger plates, more acid and extra starting power. During testing, not a single failure was reported in over 26,000 starts in temperatures ranging from sub-zero to more than 100 degrees, hence the name "DieHard."
