Family moves antiques store from Charles Town to downtown Hagerstown
A mother-and-son team have moved their business, Junkworks Antiques, from Charles Town, W.Va., to downtown Hagerstown.
"We just thought that we would get better business up here," said Josh Goldman, who owns the business with his mother, Lynne Erting.
Last month the store moved into the commercial space at 59 N. Potomac St., the former location of Kendall Taylor Home. For decades before that, the building housed Lena Darner Boutique, a women's clothing shop that was a downtown fixture since 1955, according to Herald-Mail Media archives.
Goldman said he and his mother shared a love of antiques for years and decided to launch a full-time venture after she retired from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.
"I'm more into industrial, advertising, auto, farm-related decor. My mom's more into mid-century modern, jewelry and glassware. Put those things together, and this is what you get," Goldman said, gesturing to the wares in the building.
He said they operated a store for two years in Charles Town, then heard about a larger and less-expensive option in Hagerstown.
"James and Jess (Zawatski) are friends of ours, and they let us know about a possible location," Goldman said.
The Zawatskis operate James and Jess' House of Goods across Franklin Street from Junkworks' new home.
On Wednesday, Goldman was preparing to ship 10 vintage pirate flags and some antique lights to customers. Both had been sold though social media.
"It's vital," Goldman said of the store's social media presence, which includes Instagram and Facebook accounts. "If I did not have social media, we would not be in business."
Still, he said, the downtown store is crucial.
"It's a place to display our larger items with the hope that someone can envision it in their home," he said. "It only takes one person to come in here and buy one thing, and the day is made."
The store is open Mondays through Fridays from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The phone number is 304-702-3813.
"We're always buying old stuff," he added.

We stopped her unexpectedly as we were headed to Virginia. This “store” is made up of over 150 separately owned antique booths. All are clean and the merchandise is displayed tastefully. Merchandise is a collection of mostly collectibles and antiques. Prices are fair to even below what they should be. I got a couple large planters and they were wrapping securely and even put in a box. Staff was helpful and very pleasant. Might even stop again on our way north!!

Mom, thinking that it was me who opened the door. When she saw Lyokha she wanted to close it back, but the guys did not let her. In bewilderment, she stood naked in front of them, and they looked at her and bellowed like stallions. Mom from dasada slapped Lyokha in the face. To be continued.
