Why Make 2 Keys for Newer Gm Vehicles If You Only Lost 1

Cutting a new key for your vehicle may have been easier 20 years ago, but with modern times comes new technology and the focus on safety and security. Newer GM vehicle models are utilizing the transponder key or keyless entry remote systems in their vehicles to add protection for both you and your vehicle.

Keyless Ignition Systems Are Standard in Many GM Models

Many GM vehicles, within the past four years, have turned to the standard of keyless ignition systems. While it is not standard across the board on GM vehicles, many of their models come with the option for a keyless ignition system, such as:

  • Chevy Cruz
  • Sonic
  • Spark
  • Trax
  • Suburban
  • Tahoe
  • GMC Yukon or Yukon XL

Losing a key for these cars can become a headache for the vehicle owner. The only way to get a new key cut for systems utilizing keyless entry is to have an entirely new key programmed for your vehicle.

Once a new key is programmed for your GM vehicle, all previously programmed keys are invalid!

What are the options for replacing the key for your GM vehicle with a keyless ignition system?

Replacing the keyless ignition system key on your GM automobile can become a pricey ordeal. Three options for replacement are:

  • Car dealership
  • Mail-order car-key vendor
  • Locksmith

Choosing to work with your car dealership, where the GM vehicle was purchased, will be the most expensive option for cutting your new keys. Most dealerships charge around $150-$350 to replace your device and should be a last resort.

A reputable locksmith, such as Cheap Lock & Key, will have your vehicle up and running with a new system for a much better rate. All that is required for cutting your new keys is a form of identification and the vehicle's VIN number.

The Reason Behind Cutting 2 Replacement Keys.

And now, regarding the big question of why do you need two replacement keys. The reason is that when your key is reprogrammed to a new keyless entry system, the previous code that was used to communicate between the key and your car is no longer valid and invalidates all other keys prior to that as well. The safest way to make sure you do not lose a key in the future is to have two identical keys cut the moment your keyless entry system is restarted with a new code.

These two keys give you a better chance of being able to avoid resetting the system in the future. When cutting a new key for your car, it is important, with modern safety systems, to make duplicates immediately.

Canadian Locksmiths can duplicate spare keys and replace lost and stolen car keys for the entire line of General Motors cars and trucks. We also supply and program keyless remotes and transponder chipped car keys. GM was one of the early adopters of adding security systems built into the car. It started in 1986 on the Pontiac Corvette but then over time became standard across its entire line of vehicles of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn.

First Generation

The first system used by GM as called the Vehicle Anti Theft System or more commonly referred to as VATS. The VATS car key system used by GM was a small black pellet on the metal blade that contained no electronics, its was simple a resistor. They produced approximately 15 different resistor values and each car came off the factory line programmed to 1 of those 15 VATS resistors values. You would insert the VATS key into the ignition cylinder lock and the car would read the resistance value on the key. If is was the correct one that matched the one in the cars computer is would allow you to start the car. But if is was the wrong one the car would lock down for up to 4 minutes. This means even if you immediately tried the correct VATS key the car would not start until the 4 minute lockdown was completed. There are two variations of the VATS key system one is a single sided cut key and the other is a double sided cut key convince key. These keys have not been used for some time and the cars they work are quite old. The most common call we get is that the VATS security light comes on even when using the correct key and they cannot start the car. Sometimes the key can simply worn out or the old brittle wiring in the steering column has shorted or broken. Canadian Locksmiths can resolve both of these problems. We can come onsite to your car to cut and program a new key at your car and they always includes a 90 day warranty.

Second Generation

The second generation of security GM implemented was not a key but an ignition. GM realized the most common method of attacking for stealing the car was people jamming something into the ignition cylinder lock and forcing it to the on position. So GM came up with an idea to protect the ignition cylinder lock from this type of theft. This ignition system is referred to as a Passive Anti Security System or PASS system. What makes it unique is that the PASS ignitions contained a magnet inside of the ignition. The magnet used the Hall Effect to record the ignition into the car’s computer to allow the car to be started. If someone attempted to force the ignition lock cylinder  to the ON position this fragile magnet would break and that would in turn activate the immobilizer system and prevent the car from starting. Canadian Locksmiths receives calls all the time about people saying my car key won’t start my car and there is a THEFT or PADLOCK symbol on their dashboard. This is a sign that the car is in lockout mode and needs service. It could be as simple as reprogramming the PASS ignition magnet back to the cars computer or installing a new PASS ignition and programming it. Canadian Locksmiths can provide both of these service at your car anywhere in Windsor and Essex County. and they always includes a 90 day warranty.

Third Generation

The third generation of computer chip car keys used by GM is the transponder key. They use several varieties of coded keys and keyways on all of the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn cars. This also when GM added a keyless remote option to the car. There are several varieties and button configurations the two most common are the the OUC60221 and the other is the KOBGT04A. They both look similar but are not compatible with each other. We can supply a keyless entry remote for your GM car and program it for you all at your car anywhere in Windsor and Essex County. Canadian Locksmiths can also cut duplicate keys and provide lost and stolen key replacement service for all these keys and remotes. Some of the chipped car keys look like they don’t have a chip inside of them. But look closer, if your GM key has a PK3, PK3+, RW, T5 or a symbol of a circle with a plus sign then its has a chip inside. The other variety of these keys is called a keyless flip remote fob. The key is hidden inside of the remote and by pressing a button on the remote the metal blade will flip out. You have the convenience of the transponder key being built into the keyless entry remote. If you look closer at these keys you will see that there actually high security milled and laser cut keys. Fortunately Canadian Locksmiths has the key cutting machine to cut these onsite at your car. Simply call Canadian Locksmiths with the year make and model of your car and we will give you an accurate quote with no hidden fees. When the job is completed you will pay the price quoted never anything extra and they always includes a 90 day warranty.

Fourth Generation

The current generation of keys and keyless entry remotes that GM uses is wireless coded proximity. Now you simply walk up to your car and the coded prox will automatically unlock the car door as you approach. This convenient keyless entry system allows your hands to be free from having to press the remote. Then when you get inside of the car simply press the start button on the dashboard to start the car. No need to remove the keyless entry remote from your pocket or purse.

Dude, Where’s My Keys? How to Get a New Chevrolet Car Key

Many of us have lost our car keys countless times throughout our lives, whether it be in day to day life, or while on a summer road trip. And, while most of the time, people find their misplaced keys eventually, you should know what to do if you don’t and have lost your car keys permanently. Depending on the year that your car was made, there are a couple of different ways that you can get a Chevy key replacement.

Step 1: Write Down the Year, Make, and Model of Your Chevrolet Car

If you lose your Chevy key and need to replace it, the first thing you should do is figure out the year, make, and model of your car and write it down. This step is important because you are not going to be able to have your Chevy key replaced by a car dealer or locksmith if you cannot tell him or her what year and model your Chevrolet Car is.

One reason why a car dealer or locksmith can’t make you replacement Chevy keys if you do not know the model, make, and year Chevrolet made your car is because each car has a specialized car key based on those characteristics.

For example, before the mid-2000s, Chevy had a separate key and remote key fob to open and close their car doors. Now, Chevy has cars that use a flip key to open and start their vehicles. A car flip key is a key that folds into the key’s remote fob.

Step 2: Figure Out What Type of Car Key You Need

If your car was made before 1981, you will probably just need a standard key cut. If your car was made after 1981, you will likely need a transponder key. A transponder key has a special programmed chips in it for safety.

Another type of car key is a smart key. Smart keys have remotes and key fobs. Some smart keys do not even require traditional means of turning on the ignition.

Step 3: Write Down the VIN Number on Your Chevrolet Car

The next step to obtaining replacement Chevy keys is to record your VIN number. VIN stands for vehicle identification number. Your vehicle identification number is a one of a kind identifier for your vehicle.

This means that no other vehicle has the exact same vehicle identification number as your car does. This also means that no other vehicle can have the exact same car key that your car does. Even two vehicles of the same kind and model do not have the same vehicle identification number.

Thus, if you do not know the vehicle identification number to your Chevrolet car, you cannot have your Chevy key made. You can locate most Chevy VIN numbers on a sticker on the inside of a Chevy driver’s door.

Vehicle identification numbers are 17 digits long but most car dealers and locksmiths will only need the last eight digits of your car’s VIN number to give you an accurate quote.

Step 4: Call a Locksmith or Car Dealer

Now that you know the make, year, and model of your car along with your car’s VIN number, you need to call a locksmith or Chevy car dealer to make your replacement key. If you plan to call a car dealer, note that it would make it easier on you if you called a dealer that worked at the dealership that you purchased your car from.

If you plan to call a locksmith there a variety of independent and company locksmiths that you can look up and call.

Step 5: Provide Car Dealer or Locksmith with Your Car’s Information

Once you have contacted a car dealer or locksmith, give that person all the information you gathered about your car. This information includes the year, make, and model of your car and the VIN number of your car.

Once you’ve done that, the car dealer or locksmith can create your replacement Chevy keys. Once you’ve provided the necessary information, you can also order your Chevy key.

Step 6: Purchase Your New Chevrolet Key
Once the car dealer or locksmith creates your Chevy key, you can officially purchase it. When purchasing replacement Chevy keys you will also have to pay a programming fee.

Newer electronic car keys require programming. Older non-electronic Chevy cars do not need key programming.

The cost to program a new Chevy key depends on the type of key you need. Chip keys (double cut keys) generally cost around $75, while a laser cut key can run anywhere from $135 to $275.

If you need a copy of a Chevy key that you still have the key to, you can simply have a car dealer or locksmith make one. If you lost your Chevy key fob remote, order a new one from a car dealer or locksmith.

How Will You Go About Getting a New Chevrolet Car Key? Now that you know the different ways to get a Chevy key replacement, it is time to decide which way makes sense for you. Do you have an old Chevrolet that whose year is before the 2000s but after 1981? If so you may need to separately get a new car key and a new remote fob.

If your Chevy was built prior to 1981, you will only need a standard key made. If your Chevy was built after the mid-2000s, you will need a copy of a key and an attached remote key fob in the form of a flip key. If you have a more modern key, you will need to program your key as well. If you want to save money you can learn to program your car key yourself.
