UP Dispatchers Gain More

The majority of Union Pacific train dispatchers recognized the benefits of staying management and did not complete an authorization card (A-card). Their decision likely is based on the direct benefits of remaining part of the management team.

From to , UP train dispatchers’ average pay increases exceeded union-represented Class 1 train dispatchers. During these last seven years, UP dispatchers’ average wage increase was greater than union-represented dispatcher increases in 5 of the 7 years.

Although UP doesn’t often refer to averages because each management employee is paid on merit, it’s useful to consider averages in the context of pay.

The average salary for a Union Pacific train dispatcher as of March 1, is $,, which is higher than the estimated Class 1 union-represented train dispatcher average salary of $, UP is clearly in the market range on average salary.

However, it’s important to remember that UP train dispatchers are eligible for merit-based bonus and equity compensation, which increases UP train dispatchers up to $, in average total compensation. This total compensation amount is approximately % higher than Class 1 union-represented train dispatchers’ average salary.

After adding in the value of the employee benefits UP provides to each train dispatcher, the total rewards (compensation and benefits) package for UP dispatchers is significantly more valuable than union-represented train dispatcher compensation and benefits.

As shown in the table, when compared to Class 1 union-represented train dispatcher offerings, UP train dispatchers receive significantly richer benefits for retirement plans, short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance/AD&D. In addition, UP’s medical benefits are very competitive with union-represented medical benefits as shown in detail in Hard Numbers on Healthcare.

Train Crew

What Will You Do?

  • Train Crew employees are responsible for serving our customers by providing the safe, on-time, and on-plan movement of freight trains.
  • You will not work a standard hour week with variable work hours and irregularly scheduled days off. Train Crew employees are often on-call, even on nights, weekends and holidays, and are typically required to report to work within 90 minutes of notification.
  •  You may also travel with our trains, sometimes spending a day or more away from your home terminal.
  • The railroad never stops, so you will be working outdoors in all weather conditions - including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat.
  • To ensure you and others stay safe, you must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats and hearing protection where the company requires.

What Will You Learn?

You do not need any previous railroad experience; we provide all the necessary training.  Your first 8 weeks on the job will be dedicated to formal training both in the classroom and in the field.  You'll learn about how work safely, operate rail equipment and move and classify freight cars within a Union Pacific yard.

Union Pacific operates in 23 states west of the Mississippi River. As a Train Crew employee, you will be assigned to a specific hub and this will dictate the geographic region in which you will work. You may be required to travel to or be assigned work at any location within that hub. Assignments within the hub are based on seniority.

As a newly hired Train Crew trainee, you can expect to earn about $52, a year. As you advance to Conductor and Locomotive Engineer positions, you can earn up to $88, a year or more. A Train Crew employee is paid on a trip rate for a yard, local, or thru freight assignment. Your actual pay will depend on location and Union-negotiated agreements.
