UPDATE 8:39 p.m.: The Virginia Department of Transportation says that the crash involving a tractor-trailer on southbound Interstate 81 has been cleared.

The crash took place at mile marker 143 in Roanoke County and caused some delays for drivers. Crews worked quickly to get the road back open.

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is reporting approximately a 4.5-mile delay on southbound Interstate 81 due to a tractor-trailer crash in Roanoke County.

VDOT says that the south left shoulder, left lane, and right shoulder are closed as crews work to clean up the crash.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - VDOT Update: As of 12:20 a.m. on October 8, all lanes on Interstate 81 in the Harrisonburg area have reopened following a crash that occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on October 7.

Original VDOT Report: All southbound lanes and the left northbound lane on Interstate 81 are closed at mile-marker 249.6 due to a crash.

This location is between exit 247 at Route 33 and exit 251 at Route 11 in the Harrisonburg area.

The northbound lane is expected to open soon, but southbound lanes will remain closed. There is no estimate for southbound reopening. Traffic in this area will detour off of I-81 at exit 251.

Traffic backups are approximately 4.0 miles.

An earlier crash on I-81 southbound at mile-marker 246.4 has all lanes open with a 1.5-mile backup.

Motorists should expect extensive delays in this area.

The initial crash involving a tractor-trailer is still creating some problems for drivers. VDOT says backups are still around four miles at mile marker 108 near Radford; however, traffic cameras in the area show traffic is moving normally around mile marker 107.

The original tractor-trailer crash is at mile marker 108 in Montgomery County, near Radford.

VDOT says backups here are approaching four miles.

The north right lane and right shoulder are still closed.
