Member Country: UK - England Town: over there Length: under 3m Engine: outboard Join Date: Aug 2008 Posts: 9 | anyone know anything about a 40HP 2stroke mercury? so i have a 16ft Excedo RHIB with a 40HP 2 stroke mercury on it. and it goes through about 1 tank of 2 stroke oil to every 2 tanks of gas. and the things eats fuel like crazy. and the motor is very hard starting, even after it has been driven for a few hours and gets warmed up. does anyone have any idea as to what this could be? and does anyone know anything about Excedo Canada? that is where i got my boat from. thanks for any help. __________________ __________________ |

How 'crazy' is the fuel usage? How 'hard' is it to start? If you could be more specific, you may get a favourable response. ![]() __________________ |

So if its using significantly more than 1L of oil for every 50L of fuel its possibly got something wrong. If you spend most of your time at full throttle I would expect it to burn through ~15 L per hour (4 US gal / hr) of fuel. __________________ |

Member Country: UK - England Town: over there Length: under 3m Engine: outboard Join Date: Aug 2008 Posts: 9 | i would say the two stroke is about a couple of litres at the most. yes i spend most of my time at WOT soi guess the fuel consumption is about right. what about the RPMs,w here should they be at, cuz the sticker on the motor says max rpm is 5500, and at WOT it is only around 3500rpm. and it is really hard starting, like u have to turn the keyu 4 or 5 times sometimes to get it to stay running and even then it will sometimes bog out on u unless u give it throttle right away. it has a 25Litre gas tank. another thing was when u make sharp turns with the boat at WOT, the motor just revs up and the boat does notg o any where, but the tach does not move when the engine revs right up. it is weird, someone said the prop is coming out of the water and sucking air? any help would be awesome!! is it better to store the motor outside over the winter covered up and winterized or store it somewhere inside where it is warm? __________________ |

Have you had it in to a good shop for a checkover? The poor starting sounds like it just needs a good tune up. If you're buring too much oil, your plugs could be fouled as well.... __________________ |

I think it's likely that you are way overpropped, which would account for part of the low rpms at WOT. A 40 on a 16 foot RIB sounds a bit low, so you'd most likely need a fairly low pitched prop. __________________ |

That would give people an idea if the engine is set too high or trimmed completely wrong or something. __________________ |

Member Country: UK - England Town: over there Length: under 3m Engine: outboard Join Date: Aug 2008 Posts: 9 | Carbs, throttle out of wack and water in the engine and fuel!! so i finally took my boat into a licensed mercury dealer for them to take a look at it. and what they found was very interesting. the carbs were all out of wack and the throttle cables were all out to lunch as well. and there was water in the fuel and engine so that is why the thing was running like shit. so it cost me $400 but now it runs like new! so if i put a 55 or 65HP mercury 2 stroke on it that would be a better engine for this size boat? i could get a 60HP mercury for around $3000 if i traded mine in. anyone have any thoughts or suggestions. thanks __________________ |

A lawyer would simply present that you were operating outside the envelope of manufacturer's suggested performance, and you'd be negligent in whatever it was that happened. __________________ |

How to Adjust the Carburetor on a 40-HP Mercury 2-Stroke Outboard
Move the motor's shifter into "Neutral." Loosen the throttle cam follower screw. Turn the idle speed screw until the throttle plate positioner does not touch the idle speed screw. The throttle plate will close.
Loosen the jam nuts, located right below the throttle cam on the throttle cable. Move the the throttle to the idle position. Set the cam follower roller against the throttle cam. Adjust the throttle cable sleeves in their mounting bracket so the roller is centered on the raised mark on the throttle cam, while allowing some slack, between 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch in the throttle cables, as measured with a machinist's ruler.
Tighten the jam nuts on the throttle cable and tighten the cam follower screw. Turn the idle speed screw clockwise -- to the right -- until there is a gap of between 0.005 inch and 0.040 inch between the throttle cam and the cam follower.
Attach a flushing attachment to a garden hose. Set the flushing attachment over the raw water intake ports of the motor and turn the hose on full force. Start the motor and warm it to its normal operating temperature range.
Attach a shop tachometer to the motor's Number 1 cylinder. Turn the idle speed screw on the carburetor linkage to adjust the motor's speed to between 700 and 800 rpm.
Put the motor in "Forward." Turn the mixture screw clockwise until the motor begins to misfire. Turn the screw counterclockwise one-quarter turn or until the motor no longer misfires. With the motor in gear, "punch" the throttle for sudden acceleration and readjust the mixture screw if it "bogs down" before accelerating. Recheck and readjust the idle to between 700 and 800 rpm.

Tips
- When you measure the slack in the throttle cable, rock the throttle cam from side to side, measuring the amount of travel between the throttle cam and the link rod ball.
Warnings
- If you work on your outboard motor when your boat is on its trailer, or your motor is on a storage stand, bend the tabs of the retaining washer away from the propeller retaining nut with a pair of pliers and remove the propeller nut from the shaft. Slide the propeller, the washer, spacer and thrust washer from the propeller shaft. Failure to remove a propeller before operating an outboard out of the water during maintenance or long-term storage is an invitation to a propeller-strike injury, which can maim or kill.

Using the correct grade of fuel helps to ensure optimum performance, economy and reliability from your engine. It is important to follow the recommendations for your model engine as incorrect fuel can damage your engine or affect performance.
IMPORTANT:
- Using fuel that is below the minimum recommended octane may reduce engine life
- Fuel recommendations are based on engines being set up and tuned to manufacturer's specifications. This includes using the correct propeller to allow engine to achieve recommended maximum RPM under typical load and conditions
- Leaded fuel is not recommended
- Fuel that exceeds 10% ethanol is not recommended
MERCURY & MARINER FUEL RECOMMENDATIONS
- Use a major brand of automotive unleaded petrol (ULP) with a minimum posted octane rating of 91
- These recommendations apply to Mercury and Mariner 2-Stroke, 4-Stroke, Verado and OptiMax models unless specified otherwise (ref to "Notes & Exceptions" following)
Notes & Exceptions
Verado Models:
- Verado 275/300hp - Premium Unleaded Petrol with a minimum 95 octane recommended for maximum performance
- Verado 350hp - Premium Unleaded Petrol with a minimum 95 Octane Recommended for Maximum performance
- Verado 400R - Premium Unleaded Petrol with a minimum 98 octane
Engines manufactured prior to 1980:
- 2hp to 20hp - Unleaded Petrol (ULP) - minimum 91 Posted Octane
- 30hp & above - Premium Unleaded Petrol (PULP) - minimum 95 Posted Octane
Performance Products will have different requirements, consult your Operation andMaintenance Manual
OIL RATIOS - 2-STROKE MODELS
Pre-Mix Models
Fuel/oil ratio: 50:1 (50 parts fuel to 1 part oil)
Oil requirement: - Certified TC-W3 2-Stroke Outboard Oil
- Mercury or Quicksilver Premium 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard Oil
- Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard Oil
- 2-stroke oil is normally added to the fuel tank when filling with fuel.
- This convenient oil measuring bottle is great for calculating oil required for various volumes of fuel - order part # 67-886696 from your authorised Mercury dealer
Pre-mix is generally used in the following 2-stroke models
- All 2hp to 30hp models
- All models up to 225hp manufactured prior to 1984
Autoblend Models
Oil requirement: - Certified TC-W3 2-Stroke Outboard Oil
- Mercury or Quicksilver Premium 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard Oil
- Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle TC-W3 Outboard Oil
- Autoblend models have an oil reservoir mounted inside the boat that automatically blends oil with the fuel at a constant ratio of 50:1
- 2-stroke oil is added to the reservoir and does not need to be mixed with the fuel (unless required for running-in)
- Autoblend was used on some 35hp to 115hp models manufactured between 1984 and 1988
Oil Injection Models
Oil requirement
Mercury/Mariner V6 models have an additional oil reservoir mounted in the boat

• It is very important to refer to your engine's Owners Manual for important safety precautions when installing a propeller.
• A new propeller's hub and blades must be checked for sufficient lower unit and trim tab clearances before use.
• Make sure all propeller hardware is installed correctly.
• Engine manufacturer recommends greasing the propeller shaft every 12 months.
• Wide open throttle RPM, with boat on the water in forward gear under normal loading conditions, should fall within the range that is recommended by the engine manufacturer and not exceed the recommended maximum. This is important in determining a suitable propeller pitch. When in doubt, dealer assistance is suggested.
• Prop installation, inspection and boat operation all need to be done in a safe and responsible manner.
