Xfi won't properly reserve IP address for device; printers show as unconnected
Hi. Posting this here because Comcast hasn't a clue.
I just switched from a third party router to the Comcast xfi gateway. I hate that there's no network map, that only MAC addresses rather than common language names show on the connected device list, and that I can't change host names in the edit dialogues, but I was allowed to change the LAN address to its previous state (to 192.168.0.x from 10.0.0.x), and the gateway is working okay with two exceptions:
(1) I tried re-reserving at the same IP addresses the MAC addresses of devices that I previously reserved on the old router. Everything seems to be okay on that score except for one device, a Sonore microRendu audio streamer, which keeps reverting to the same DHCP-assigned address. With my old router, it was at 192.168.0.6, but now it's always reachable only at 192.168.0.246, even after the assignment page tells me it has saved the new address and the connected devices list shows it at the new address.
I have disconnected the device from the network and, after ten minutes or so, can tell the gateway via the phone app to "forget this device," but it always comes back on at the same 192.168.0.246 address. My old router would allow me to disconnect and forget a device instantaneously, but this one doesn't seem to do that, and "forget this device" definitely doesn't work. (I note that others posting in the Comcast forums have had the same issue and there's been no solution posted other than to try "forget this device." There must be something one can do to make "forget" a useful option.)
(2). My two printers definitely are connected to the network as I have been able to print off to them from my computer and can ping them, but the router interface, the Xfinity webpage, and the Xfinity app all show them as disconnected. It isn't a big deal because they are working okay, but how can I get them to be recognized as connected?
Thanks for your help!

Does Xfinity have dynamic IP?
Comcast consumer internet plans are all dynamic. This doesn’t mean the IP address will change, it just means it can change. The modem has no impact on this. Having a dynamic or static IP address is something that Comcast controls on their side, and they typically tie static IPs to business plans.
How much does Comcast charge for a static IP?
If you want a static IP, they charge $14.95/month for the modem, plus $19.95 for 1 static, or $25 for 5 statics.
Will Comcast give me a new IP address?
Comcast will recognize the router as a new computer and then will assign a new IP address within its range of available IPs.
How do I get a static IP address from Comcast?
Find static IP information
- Sign in to My Account and select Internet from the Services menu.
- Select View Static IP.
- Your Static IP Number, CIDR Block Number, Gateway IP Address and Subnet Mask IP Address information will be displayed.
What does a static IP mean?
Static IP addresses An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned to each computer on a network. A computer on the Internet can have a static IP address, which means it stays the same over time, or a dynamic IP address, which means the address can change over time.
How do I know if I have a static IP address?
Check for Static IP Address in Android
- From the top of the screen, swipe down to display settings. Select WiFi.
- Select your current network. Select Advanced.
- Make sure that IP settings is set to DHCP.
Do I have a dynamic IP?
It is easy to check if you have a static IP address or dynamic IP address. Under system preferences, select Network and then “Advanced”, then go to TCP/IP. Under “Configure IPv4” if you see MANUALLY you have a static IP address and if you see USING DHCP you have a dynamic IP address.
Is static or dynamic IP better?
Conclusion. Typically, static IP addresses are best for businesses, which host their own websites and internet services. Static IP addresses also work well when you have remote workers logging into work via a VPN. Dynamic IP addresses are usually fine for most consumers.
Is static IP safer than dynamic?
Static IP addresses pose potential security weak points since hackers will have sufficient time to attack the network. Static IP addresses always cost significantly more than dynamic IP addresses. Setting up a static IP is usually more complex without the intervention of manual configuration aid from the ISP.
Should I use dynamic DNS?
Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is very useful if you need to access internal network services from across the Internet. It isn’t designed for hosting a business website, for that you will need standard web hosting.
Is it better to have a static IP?
Most users don’t need static IP addresses. Static IP addresses normally matter more when external devices or websites need to remember your IP address. One example is VPN or other remote access solutions that trust (whitelists) certain IPs for security purposes.
What are the advantages of static IP?
List of the Advantages of a Static IP
- You have better name resolution across the internet.
- It may provide a better level of protection.
- There are reduced lapses in connection.
- Your download and upload speeds tend to be faster.
- It gives you remote access.
- You have access to accurate geolocation data.
Which is better DHCP or static IP?
Since static IP address requires manual configurations, it can create network issues if you use it without a good understanding of TCP/IP. While DHCP is a protocol for automating the task of assigning IP addresses. DHCP does not need any manual configuration to connect to local devices or gain access to the Web.
What static IP should I use?
When making static IP assignments for local devices on home and other private networks, the address numbers should be chosen from the private IP address ranges defined by the Internet Protocol standard: 10.0. 0.0–10.255.
Does a static IP improve Ping?
A static IP is simply an IP that does not change, having a static IP in comparison to a dynamic IP (with everything else being equal) will not increase or decrease network performance.
Is static IP good for gaming?
Static IP addresses are useful for gaming, website hosting, or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Speed and reliability are key advantages. Because a static address is constant, systems with static IP addresses are vulnerable to increased security risks which is why you need a Static IP VPN.
Is Dynamic DNS good for gaming?
No, it will do absolutely nothing. Considering you obviously don’t know what it is, best you switch it off before you get hacked.
Is a static IP better for PS4?
Your router will take care of always assigning your PS4 the same internal IP address which will function the same as a static IP. If you have a router that does not allow you to manually assign IP addresses, you will need to set up a static IP address within your PS4 console.
Is DHCP good for gaming?
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used to assign dynamic IP addresses to different devices connected to the network. The best thing about DHCP for gaming is that you don’t the manual configuration for connecting to the local devices. The gamers will be able to harness access to the web.
Should I turn off DHCP?
DHCP means dynamic host configuration protocol; it hands out IP addresses for devices in your network. Unless you are going to configure each device manually, or you have a second DHCP server you should leave this option on.
What is the best Internet setup for gaming?
Fiber internet is the best choice for gamers, says Lubow. Fiber optic internet has lower latency than cable, DSL, and satellite internet. It often delivers equal or near-equal download and upload speeds, and speeds don’t slow during peak internet use times.
What Does reserving a DHCP do?
DHCP Servers support something called a “DHCP Reservation”, which essentially allows you to provide a pre-set IP address to a specific client based on it’s physical MAC address. This means that the device will always get the same IP address and it will never change (whereas they typically do on occasion).
Can two devices have the same IP address?
The Question As I understand it, two computers cannot have the same public (external) IP address unless they are connected via the same router. If they are connected via the same router, then they can have (share) the same public IP address yet have different private (local) IP addresses.
What happens if I turn off DHCP on my router?
DHCP means Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol it is a service which assigns ip addresses automatically to devices which are connected in the network and requests for an ip. So if you disable DHCP in your router your devices will not get ip addresses and they will not be able to communicate in the network.
What is a IP reservation?
When you use DHCP IP reservation, you’re telling your Wi-Fi network to assign the same IP address to a specific device whenever that device connects to your network.
