Warm and Bright Yellows

A creamy, buttery yellow like Crescent Moon is reminiscent of a lovely, summer day and is one of the easiest colors to incorporate in a kitchen. Darker yellows can look brassy and may overwhelm smaller rooms. Yellows pair well with counters and cabinets of virtually every material and color. Accessories in bright colors can make the room seem even lighter.

Classic Farmhouse Reds

When people think of farms and farmhouses, they often think of bright interior paint color schemes, and vibrant red paint colors like Sienna Red. Warm reds set the scene for a cheery kitchen where everyone feels welcome, and pitching in seems like second nature. Charming accessories like roosters and chickens pair well with bright reds. Crisp white curtains, lighter cabinets, and counters will keep the room from feeling overly garish.

Blue and Whites

Blue and Whites

One of the most popular color schemes in the rustic kitchen trend is pairing a primitive or understated blue like Lost at Sea with creamy white. This color combination gives your kitchen an aged look, is perfect for walls that are not in pristine shape. The more imperfections in your kitchen, the more realistic this color combination looks. Even in a new build, you could walk into your kitchen and think you are walking back in time. Simple cabinets with chicken wire fronts and mismatched dinnerware adds to the appeal of these colors.

Rustic colors can gradually be introduced to your kitchen. Starting with a small area can be a great way to try the colors out before committing to the entire room. Or, launch our online Room Visualizer to test different colors on your kitchen walls.

Are you building a new house and planning your dream kitchen? Or maybe you're craving a fresh, new look for your existing kitchen. It’s true what they say: The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where you and your family will spend lots of time, and where your guests will likely end up congregating. It should be a space that feels inviting and relaxing and also delivers the style and personality you want your home to reflect. Do you want a light and airy kitchen? A happy and whimsical space? Or a cozy, rustic kitchen? No matter the look, your starting point should be in establishing the color palette. An all-white kitchen will always be a classic, timeless look, but don’t be afraid to bring in some color, even in a small kitchen. The paint color—even the exact shade of white—you choose for the walls will instantly set the tone.

One of the ways to make the biggest impact is to paint your kitchen cabinets. Whether it’s painting a dark wood a bright white to lighten your space, or taking white cabinets to a deep, saturated hue that creates a warm, cozy kitchen, or even a new coat of a bright yellow or blue to add a punch of personality, changing the color of your kitchen cabinets will instantly transform your room. (If you’re planning to go the DIY route, read this article for tips on how to paint kitchen cabinets. Yes, even laminate cabinets!) 9 Essential Tips for Choosing the Coziest Farmhouse Kitchen Colors

If you love cozy cooking spaces filled with rustic elements, you're not alone. According to a trend report from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), farmhouse is one of the four most requested kitchen styles, and experts anticipate it to continue growing in popularity over the next few years. Although farmhouse kitchenpaint colors often lean neutral, these color schemes aren't all about whites and wood tones. Even bolder hues such as navy blue, terra-cotta, or green can be considered farmhouse kitchen colors in the right context. The key to creating a bright, welcoming space is a neutral base that lets you add personality with subtle hues and natural textures. Follow these tips to choose the best farmhouse kitchen colors and add an inviting vibe to the heart of your home.

1. Start with Neutral Colors

Whites, grays, and beiges are the foundation of farmhouse kitchen colors. Picking the right neutral paint color is an important first step to achieving the perfect farmhouse style. This neutral will act as the base color in your space, covering either the cabinetry, walls, or both. Although cool whites and grays have dominated recently, many homeowners and designers are now shifting toward an earthier palette, says Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets. "Stark whites are softening into khaki creams, woodsy tones that are light to medium, and nature-based colors," she says.

2. Check the Color Temperature

If you're planning a farmhouse kitchen makeover, first consider if you have any existing elements (like countertops or flooring) to work with. Be sure to consult those surfaces before picking a neutral paint color. Your new paint color should complement the tones of your kitchen's surfaces, so look for hues of the same temperature. For example, a cool beige will harmonize with a deep gray countertop, while a cream paint will draw warmth from wood flooring. Color temperature is equally important if you're starting from scratch because the base neutral will influence the additional colors you bring into the space.

To figure out if your neutrals are warm or cool, consult the darkest shade on the paint sample strip. Typically, warmer hues embrace reds, yellows, oranges, while cooler shades tend toward blues, greens, and purples. Alternatively, compare the neutral with other colors, such as blue and red swatches: What undertones do you detect in the neutral? Does it shift more towards one color when placed next to each other?

3. Paint Kitchen Cabinets

Traditionally, painted cabinets are one of the most style-defining elements of farmhouse kitchens, regardless of color. They can be painted with a rustic edge (think: worn corners and chalk-like paint applications) or a crisp finish. Because cabinetry often takes up so much visual space, it's common to use that surface area as the foundation of your kitchen. However, farmhouse kitchen cabinet colors are not limited to neutrals. It's common to find soft, muted tones or even bolder colors used for accent cabinetry, such as a colorful island or China hutch, or applied to lower cabinets, especially when the upper walls make use of floating shelves and generous white space.

Farmhouse kitchens are typically bright spaces, so regardless of the color, light shades generally work best. When you think you've found the perfect hue, try a step or two lighter on the paint swatch strip. You'll also find paler shades are usually easier to coordinate with other colors.

4. Maximize Light

One of the hallmarks of farmhouse style is a light, airy atmosphere. If you don't have nearby windows and doors offering a lot of natural light, save darker and more saturated colors for accents, and instead use bright hues for the dominant surfaces. Glossy finishes on your backsplash will also reflect light. In small or crowded kitchen layouts, simple glass pendants or other light fixtures that don't take up a lot of visual space will help the room feel bigger and brighter, too.

5. Work in White

Even if you prefer more colorful kitchen designs, white is still an essential characteristic of farmhouse style. In fact, the NKBA reported that 72% of farmhouse kitchen designs in featured a white color palette. If white walls and cabinets aren't compatible with your lifestyle (they tend to show streaks and splatters more easily), you can easily incorporate the neutral color in other ways. The iconic farmhouse apron-front sink is one way to mix in white, or you could choose white materials for backsplash tile, countertops, and appliances.

6. Add Accent Colors

Additional colors in farmhouse designs are typically part of an analogous palette: a selection of colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel, such as teals, greens, and blues, or oranges and yellows. Following neutrals, the most common farmhouse kitchen colors are blues and browns, according to a NKBA trend report, but we're also seeing designs that feature terra-cotta, gold, and green.

Farmhouse kitchen wall colors can utilize these shades, especially in small spaces or as an accent wall, where the surface area isn't overwhelming. Another option is to add unexpected color inside cabinets or on the kitchen ceiling. If you want more flexibility to change your accent color, use the hue in decor, dishware, and accents placed on open shelving.

7. Incorporate Texture

Texture, no matter how subtle, is a fundamental element of farmhouse kitchen design. Typically painted white, shiplap is the quintessential wallcovering used for authentic farmhouse texture. If shiplap is out of your budget or not practical for your space (it's hard to find room in a small kitchen for a full wall of shiplap), simple subway tile is a great way to add texture to the backsplash.

Wood and wood-look materials, also common in farmhouse kitchens, can be incorporated in the form of flooring, architectural accents like ceiling beams, and even countertops in more rustic-leaning styles. In addition to adding texture, wooden elements also warm up a farmhouse kitchen color palette.

8. Choose Farmhouse Finishes

Farmhouse kitchens should look and feel comfortable to cook and entertain in. This relaxed style typically relies on matte and brushed finishes rather than the high-gloss and chrome surfaces common in more contemporary kitchen styles. For peak farmhouse comfort, choose paints in satin or semi-gloss finishes, keeping in mind that semi-gloss tends to stand up better in busy spaces like the kitchen. Popular hardware, faucet, and fixture finishes include stainless steel and oil-rubbed bronze, but brushed nickel or gold finishes can also pair nicely with farmhouse kitchen colors.

9. Go Dark

Light colors reign supreme in traditional farmhouse-inspired spaces, but modern farmhouse kitchen colors include darker, more saturated hues. Consider a dark color for unexpected accent pieces, such as a bold black light fixture, or take a cue from designers and try something a little more unexpected. "An interesting evolution in modern farmhouse style is that the common colors for shiplap are typically white or gray, but it also has a new dramatic appeal in darker tones," says Pierce. "These darker hues are most versatile when they have slight undertones of gray, black, or even green."

Country Kitchen Paint Colors

Get ideas on how to incorporate country paint colors in your kitchen.

Country kitchens are the type of place where friends and family will want to linger long after your meals are done.

If you're planning to create a country kitchen, there are certain paint shades you should plan to incorporate in your design. White, yellow, light blue, red and beige shades can all create a country vibe in your cooking space.

You can't go wrong with white in the kitchen, especially when you're going for a country look. With so many whites to choose from, it's hard to know which ones to use. For a country vibe, look for ones that have warmth and don't feel cold and stark. Creamy whites or those with a touch of beige can help soften your space and make it feel more inviting.

Yellow is a color that's commonly used in kitchens, but for a country vibe, you'll want light shades of yellow. Calming and serene, these hues resemble fresh sticks of butter and have hints of cream in them. Try these lighter yellows on your cabinets or walls and pair them with light blues to really enhance the country theme.

Light blues are a wonderful choice in kitchens because of their calming effect, but they work especially well in country kitchens. Choose powdery or grayish blues and pair them with yellow or white accents for a warm and peaceful effect. Medium and dark blues could also work, but make sure to keep the room as light and fresh as possible. Robin's egg blue also looks pretty in a country kitchen, and it can be paired with distressed woods and creamy whites and yellows while darker shades such as navy are better in more modern spaces.

Red is a color that often comes to mind when thinking about kitchens, and it works well in country kitchens also. Instead of using a bright and bold red, look for a more muted one. Choose reds that resemble brick or have a more washed-out appearance so they're not too overpowering, and think beyond your walls. Red looks great on cabinets, chairs, tables and other areas of the kitchen. Looks for reds that are reminiscent of antique barns and crisp red apples for a no-fail combination, pair these shades with white cabinets and accents.

Mint or other pastel shades of green also make sense in a country kitchen. Pair these soothing shades with light cabinetry and countertops for a calming vibe. Avocado or moss green also work in country kitchens and can create a shabby chic look when paired with distressed wood and a tiled backsplash.

If you prefer a neutral with a bit more depth, consider using an oatmeal or wheat brown shade. Not as stark as white, these beige shades pair well with yellow, blue, red, and green.

How to Create a Living Room With Primitive Decor

By Mary Cockrill

Glowing candles, old papers and antique glasses enhance the primitive decor.

Primitive decor is rustic and simple, stretching back to the days of early American settlers. Primitive-designed home furnishings are often handmade and are one-of-a-kind treasures. Some items, however, are mass-produced reproductions that mimic the handmade look. Create a living room filled with primitive-style furnishings, colors and textures to provide a cozy, warm and inviting ambiance in your home.

Color Schemes

Primitive-style colors are rich and earthy -- barn reds, navy blues, sage greens, deep yellows, dark browns and steel grays. Colors in early American home furnishings often faded from sun exposure and wear-and-tear, creating weathered, softer shades. Create a primitive color scheme in bold earthy colors with a few soft accents for a richer look. Incorporate softer shades of the primitive color palette puntuated with a few rich-colored items to produce a quieter, more tranquil atmosphere.

Walls and Windows

Apply a neutral paint color to your living room walls. Soft beige, creamy caramel, light gray or vanilla white make ideal paint colors to provide a clean backdrop for your primitive furnishings. Cover your windows with simple curtains made from natural fabrics, such as cotton, gauze or linen. Fabrics in plaid, gingham or striped patterns convey the primitive look. You can also use a fabric in a solid color for a more monochromatic appearance. Use your primitive color scheme to select coordinating fabrics. Also, floor-length curtains can impart a more formal look to your living room over window-length counterparts.

Floors and Lighting

Hardwood floors with wide planks in a weathered finish are ideal for the primitive living room. Lay a braided or sisal area rug over your wooden floors to add comfort and texture to the space. Illuminate your living room with metal-and-glass lanterns and wall sconces with an antique finish. Suspend a black wrought-iron chandelier in the middle of your living room to create a primitive focal point. Lamps with punched-tin shades, oil lamps and assorted candles perched atop wooden candlesticks enhance the primitive look.

Furniture and Accessories

Wingback chairs, sofas with simple lines and weathered wooden benches provide comfortable seating and complement primitive style. Drape a handmade quilt over the back of your sofa and position toss pillows in the corners. Use an old wooden wagon bed as a coffee table and reclaimed storage trunks for end tables. Bookshelves, armoires, buffets and chests finished in a weathered look provide areas to display collectibles and books, as well as supply extra storage space. Adorn the walls with framed antique photographs and colorful folk art paintings. Accessorize with woven baskets, antique bottles, wooden birdhouses, handmade pottery, grapevine wreaths, metal stars and carved figurines.
