I have information that Blackmagic is working on a full frame camera. There is an announcement tomorrow, July 16th of new camera developments. Take this rumour with a pinch of salt but two and two together and stranger things have happened.

Time for a Pocket Pro?

9am PDT (LA time) will be the announcement time, to be streamed online in the video above.

The source (who has been in touch previously) told me that the Sony manufactured full frame 6K sensor from the Sigma Fp will go into a Pocket 6K Pro, which shoots BRAW from the full pixel readout of the sensor.

There’s no further detailed information about the lens mount or form factor, but as with the URSA Mini Pro, ergonomic improvements and a higher price might be an aim for the new model. If it is $3000 I’d like to see both an articulated screen and professional interchangeable mount, which would take custom locking mounts for Canon EF, Leica M, Nikon and so on.

The great thing about this solution is that Blackmagic could design it themselves without the need to seek a license to use an existing full frame mirrorless mount like Canon RF or Sony E-mount. The more openly used Micro Four Thirds mount doesn’t fit a full frame imager, although it can support a 1.5x crop Super 35mm size sensor.

It might be that tomorrow’s announcement is more minor. We’ll see.

However my source has been right before, so the information that Blackmagic want a part of the full frame market is quite credible. I rate it 8/10.

If the Pocket 6K Pro with full frame sensor comes out, I also hope the battery solution they use can support longer record times. This has been a weak point with the previous Pocket cameras, and they’re not very “Pocketable” with a V-lock on tap. I like my cameras mirrorless size, with a good EVF.

The mirrorless market is crying out for BRAW and ProRes 10bit 422 internal recording.

I think $3000 for these features in a sensibly designed body with full frame sensor would fly off the shelves.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K review: DP starter kit

I’ve always hated the gimmicky and mostly meaningless tech-jargony term “disruptor,” but that really is the role Blackmagic plays in the film industry. It makes cameras that shoot footage with a quality that approaches giants like RED and ARRI but at a fraction of the cost. The Pocket Cinema Camera line has become a favorite among indie producers, studios, and DPs, and the latest iteration shoots at a staggering 6K resolution and starts at just $2,500 instead of the tens of thousands of dollars those other cameras command. It’s incredible, but it’s certainly not for everybody, and it isn’t designed to be.

Blackmagic made waves last year with the 4K version of its Pocket Cinema Camera. “Pocket” is a misnomer, as the 6K’s body is 7 inches wide, 3.8 inches tall, and 4 inches deep, so that would require a pretty massive pocket. It’s a lot fatter and wider than your modern DSLRs and full-frame mirrorless cameras from Sony, Nikon, or Canon, but it retains that same sort of shape. That’s curious because while it can shoot still photos, that’s really not what this camera is made for. This camera is made for video, pure and simple. Compared to those aforementioned RED and Arri cameras, it is indeed much smaller.

Physically, the camera is very similar to the 4K version. The backside is dominated by a massive 5-inch touchscreen. It looks great indoors, but unfortunately, it’s really hard to see anything when you’re outside in sunlight. This is where you’ll really wish it had an electronic viewfinder like a mirrorless camera, as it’s nearly impossible to pull focus or judge proper exposure. Next to the screen are six buttons for autoexposure, autofocus, HFR (high frame rate), focus assist, menu, and playback.

On the top right-hand side of the camera is the record start / stop button with the still photo button next to it. Behind that are buttons for ISO, shutter speed, and white balance, and hitting one of those buttons will let you control those settings with the single scroll-wheel by your index finger. There are also three customizable Function buttons, which you can program to toggle zebra, grid lines, or LUT previews so you can what you’re shooting might look like after you grade it. The camera does have a built-in mic, but its quality is garbage. You might use it for syncing video with an external recorder, but that’s about it.

The right side of the camera has a door that covers the SD and CFast 2.0 card slots. The left side of the camera is where all of the ports are. You’ve got a standard 3.5mm stereo mic jack, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a full-sized HDMI out (very handy!), a locking 12-volt power supply, a USB-C port, and a mini XLR in with phantom power support for high-quality audio. I really don’t like the port covers on that side. They’re extremely fiddly, awkward, and hard to put back on. The bottom of the camera has the battery door, the tripod mount, and a large opening so the built-in fan can keep the thing from overheating, which is a problem that mirrorless cameras often encounter when shooting long video clips.

The biggest difference between the BMPCC6K and last year’s 4K is the 6K has a larger image sensor. The 4K had a 4/3 sensor, while the 6K has been bumped up to a Super 35 sensor (similar in size to an APS-C sensor). This has several advantages. For starters, the sensor being roughly 58 percent larger can gather a good deal more light, though the advantage is someone mitigated by the higher-resolution sensor, so it’s only a modest boost in low-light situations. The larger boon is that you can use Canon EF-mount lenses, which are widely available and have excellent optics. Further, the Super 35 sensor only crops the field of view 1.5x compared to a full-frame sensor, whereas the 4/3 sensor cropped 2x. The net effect is that you can get a cleaner, wider field of view.

The largest (dare I say, only) reason to get this camera is the image quality, and wow, it does not disappoint. Shooting 6K video with 12-bit colors produces footage that is unbelievably flexible, especially in the colors. Selecting Film mode in the dynamic range nets you some very flat, gray-looking footage straight out of the camera. But don’t be fooled: there is a ton of data stored in those files that lets you push and pull the colors in any direction you please. This means you can achieve all kinds of dramatically different looks. Want it to look like some washed-out 1970s filmstock? Easy. Or make it look like an early-2000s Busta Rhymes video? Not a problem. Take a look at my test footage, and you’ll see what I mean.

While the colors are incredibly malleable, you don’t get quite as much flexibility in the shadows. Blackmagic claims 13 stops of dynamic range, but I think that may be a bit exaggerated. It’s pretty easy to blow out highlights if you aren’t careful, so then you stop down. But you can only bring the shadows up so far before you start seeing a lot of noise in them, and that noise tends to be purple and ugly. The camera’s sensor has a dual native ISO of 400 and 3200, and both look really good. Things started getting pretty noisy at ISO 6400, but it was still usable. At ISO 12,800 that digital noise is far more prominent, and I’d definitely avoid the camera’s maximum of 25,600. My Sony A7Riii has better dynamic range, is less likely to blow out highlights, and detail in shadows is better-preserved (as you’d expect from a full-frame camera). But because it’s only 8-bit video, the colors aren’t nearly as flexible. It’s honestly not even close in the color department.

There are a lot of advantages to shooting in 6K. Most likely, you’ll be mixing down to 4K for your finished product, right? Well, when you shrink a 6K frame down to 4K, that over-sampling gives it a nice little boost in quality. You can also crop in by about one-third, and you won’t have any loss in quality. Or say you’ve got some shaky footage. You’ll probably want to apply a stabilization effect (such as Warp Stabilizer in Adobe Premiere), but that crops the edges of your video a bit. If you were shooting in 4K and finishing in 4K, that crop would mean that you have to stretch the video to get it back to a 4K frame, which causes pixel-stretching and a noticeable drop in sharpness and quality. When you’re shooting 6K, you can stabilize a very shaky video (which would require even more edge cropping) and still not have any pixels get stretched. You can see some examples of that in my video above. It’s pretty amazing. There’s also a built-in 6K time-lapse mode, if that’s your thing.

Part of the BMPCC6K’s special sauce is that it leverages the proprietary Blackmagic RAW codec. It’s some Pied Piper-level compression. I shot the above video using the 5:1 constant bitrate setting, which produced fantastic footage. If you want to try to eke out a little more color info, you can even go to 3:1 compression, but that’s a difference only a professional colorist would see while using a very expensive monitor. Even with that impressive compression, though, files are very large. If you’re shooting 6K24 in Blackmagic RAW 5:1, you’re looking at 1.5GB for a 10-second clip, and you can double that if you’re shooting 6K50. That’s significant, and it will eat through your cards very quickly. The 256GB card I was testing the camera with filled up in just over 28 minutes of shooting when I was shooting exclusively at 4K24, Blackmagic RAW 5:1.

Blackmagic RAW files are increasingly easy to work with. Up until recently, you had to use Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve editing software to edit it. Now, Blackmagic has released software that lets both macOS and Windows computers use the files with relative ease, which meant I could cut the above video in Adobe Premiere. DaVinci Resolve 16 is a fully functional post-production suite now, and it has best-in-class tools for color grading (especially if you’re shooting Blackmagic RAW). But there is a learning curve, and I didn’t have time to teach myself an entirely new editing platform in time for this review.

The maximum speed when shooting 6K is 50 frames per second, but if you know your project timeline will be 24 fps (which gives a more cinematic look than the standard-for-video 30 fps), then you can shoot in the High Frame Rate mode. This will shoot at 6K50 but save the file as 24 fps, slowed down to half-speed. The half-speed footage it produces looks really good, and if you know for sure that you want that clip to be slo-mo, then it’s an easy option. It does record audio, but the audio is real time, so it isn’t synced to the half-speed footage and will run out halfway through the clip. Still, it’s better than not having audio at all, and you can stretch it in audio editing programs if you want.

The camera looks friendly enough, with its reasonable price, its big, bulbous shape, and its extremely intuitive touchscreen menu (seriously, the menu is fantastic), but don’t be fooled. This isn’t the type of camera that a beginner can grab and just start busting out beautiful clips. For starters, it doesn’t have the auto features you would expect on a consumer or prosumer camera. It doesn’t have things like auto ISO, which would be nice for times when you want to lock in your shutter speed and iris. It also doesn’t have any in-body stabilization (which we’re now seeing in mirrorless cameras from Sony and Nikon), so handheld shots are really shaky. You’re going to want a tripod or a gimbal for basically every shot. Also, the body isn’t weather-sealed, so using it in the rain or in dusty areas would be a significant gamble.

The worst part is the autofocus. For starters, there is no continuous autofocus option, so it can’t track a subject if it moves in the frame, which basically all mirrorless shooters can do, and do well. (Sony’s Eye-AF is the current leader in this arms race.) If you want to use autofocus, you press the button in the back, and then it typically takes a few seconds of wild hunting until it locks in on the focal point, which makes it effectively unusable during a shot. You also can’t tap to focus or move the focal point away from the center of the frame, which means you may have to move your shot to focus on something, and then move it back, and even then, the autofocus isn’t super accurate.

All of this is to say that you need to have a good eye and a practiced hand for manually pulling focus, and that’s a skill that can take years to develop. But even if you are a skilled DP, the screen’s lack of brightness is going to make it really difficult for you to see what you’re doing if you’re shooting outdoors, so you may find yourself spending more money on an external monitor. This is less of a big deal for professional DPs, though, and that’s really who this camera is for.

“It’s got a consumer price but it’s really a pro camera,” Blackmagic’s director of sales operations – Americas, Bob Caniglia, told me. “The consumer price helps us reach people who are new to it but want to be serious about it. It’s not really something the weekend dad is going to get, unless he already really knows what he’s doing.” That’s about my read on it, too. If you’ve got some filmmaking skills already and have reached the limits of what a prosumer mirrorless camera can do, this thing is incredibly powerful. But even so, it would be nice to see some of these modern convenience features added.

The camera chomps through batteries and memory cards like a T. rex coming off a juice cleanse. It uses the puny Canon LP-E6 battery, a design that’s been around for as long as digital SLRs have. Blackmagic claims it will get you 45 minutes of 6K24 recording to a CFast 2.0 card with the screen at 50-percent brightness. Realistically, you’re going to need the screen at full brightness if you’re outside (and even that’s not bright enough). I tested it with an external SSD and only got 30.5 minutes of record time. Either way, that’s pretty bad. Blackmagic has a new grip coming out that uses two of the Sony L-series batteries which are a lot bigger. Blackmagic will get you two hours of recording time. It will be released next month for $245, plus the cost of batteries at roughly $125 a pop.

As far as storage goes, Blackmagic has a list of memory solutions that the BMPCC6K has been tested to work with without dropping frames or otherwise glitching. For 6K video, you’re going to have to use a CFast 2.0 card. The problem is that CFast 2.0 is still pretty new, so it’s not widely available, and it’s wildly expensive. I picked up a SanDisk Extreme Pro 256GB card for this review, and it set me back a knee-wobbling $420 before tax. That’s absurd.

The better solution would be to use the USB-C port and shoot to an SSD, right? Well, the above list only has two drives approved for shooting at speeds of 6K50. That’s not a lot of options. However, I tested it with a Samsung Portable T5 as well as a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, both of which are light and compact (so they can just dangle off the camera), and they both performed flawlessly. That’s a great option to have, and you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck than you would with a CFast 2.0 card.

When it comes to editing 6K footage, you’re going to want a computer with some serious graphics processing power, especially since you’re going to be editing color and applying filters, which take even more horsepower. You’re also going to want to use the fastest SSD you can get your hands on. For my edit, I used my late-2018 HP Spectre x360 15-inch laptop and a Samsung Portable SSD X5, which utilizes Thunderbolt 3 and the very fast NVMe interface. That hard drive gave me no bottlenecks at all, which was a relief. The computer did well, too. The only thing that kept falling on its face was Adobe Premiere CC. While coloring footage Premiere would crash roughly every five minutes. I spoke with some other producers, and they all confirmed that Premiere CC has been having tons of issues lately, and it made me wish I already knew how to use DaVinci Resolve. This camera comes with the Studio version of Resolve, which is the more fully featured version, and it includes everything from assembly to sound mixing and motion graphics.

The camera is really all about the incredible colors. They’re realistic, vibrant, and amazingly malleable. This was the first time I’d ever been able to shoot in 6K, and I absolutely loved it. It gives you a ton of flexibility for cropping and stabilizing in post, and Blackmagic RAW didn’t make my computer burst into flames. I really wish it had better autofocus, a little less noise in the shadows, in-body stabilization, an EVF, and weather-sealing, but to get footage of this quality at this price, there are bound to be some trade-offs.

In the last year, a ton of the DPs I’ve worked with have used the BMPCC4K as their B-camera, and the results they get with it are gorgeous (even though they, too, have a lot of focus issues with the camera). I know a couple have already preordered the 6K and will be switching to it as soon as it arrives. It’s easy to see why. A lot of small studios and independent DPs will pick these up in the months to come, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see your next favorite indie flick shot with one of these. You’ve got to know what you’re doing, but if you do, you’ll be capable of producing pure eye candy.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF is the perfect accessory to make outdoors and handheld shooting easy! You get a high quality viewfinder with built in proximity sensor, 4 element glass diopter with an incredible -4 to +4 adjustment, built in status information, and a digital focus chart. The Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF connects quickly to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro via a single connector. The viewfinder has up to 70 degree swivel, and comes with a set of 4 eyecups including left and right eye.

Blackmagic Design’s new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is a Super 35 camera with tilting screen, built-in ND filters and more

Blackmagic Design has announced the latest camera in its Pocket Cinema Camera lineup, the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (BMPCC6KP), an EF-mount Super 35mm cinema camera with a tilting touchscreen LCD display, built-in ND filter and more.

The announcement, which you can view in its entirety below (the BMPCC6KP announcement starts about 80 minutes in), shows off a familiar form factor with a number of improvements Blackmagic customers have been asking for. Most significantly, the BMPCC6KP now has a 5" tilting touchscreen LCD display (1920 x 1080 pixels) on the rear of the camera that puts out 1500 nits of brightness.

Another improvement is a built-in motor-driven ND filter with 2, 4 and 6 stop increments. Blackmagic says the IR filters are designed to filter both optical and infrared (IR) wavelengths. To improve battery life of the BMPCC6KP over its predecessors, which used Canon LP-E6 batteries, this new camera now runs off Sony NP-F570 batteries: a staple in the video industry for powering all sorts of cameras, lights and accessories.

Blackmagic Design says the camera features its 5th generation color science, which was first seen in Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini Pro 12K camera. Blackmagic Design says Pocket Cinema 4K and 6K users will also receive this updated color science via a firmware update within the next few months.

Other features include SD UHS-II and CFast 2.0 storage slots, USB-C media disk recording and a pair of mini XLR audio inputs (the 4K and 6K only have one).

For those who want something more than the tilting LCD display, Blackmagic Design has also created a new external viewfinder that can mount to the top of the camera and comes with four swappable eyepieces for a customized fit. Also new is a Pro Grip, which will hold two NP-570 batteries instead of one.

The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is available to purchase for $2,495. The external viewfinder and Pro Grip will cost $495 and $145, but no release date has been specified at this time.

Magicbooster Pro launched for 6K Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera to emulate full frame sensor

LucAdapters has launched a crowd funding campaign to develop a focal reducer for the newly announced Super 35mm 6K cinema camera from Blackmagic Design. The reducer will allow users to mount full frame lenses on the camera with only a slight crop, thus emulating the look of a camera with a full frame sensor.

The company has history with this kind of adapter and currently makes a reducer for the Ursa Mini called Magicbooster Pro, and has in the past made a full-frame adapter for the Samsung NX1. This new model will be called Magicbooster Pocket 6K and will combine the benefits of a 1 stop increase in effective aperture as well as decreasing the crop factor of the 6K area of the camera’s Super 35mm sensor from 1.5x to 1.1x. This allows full frame lenses to practically maintain their intended angle of view when recording 6K footage, with a 50mm lens acting like a 55mm with the reducer instead of like a 75mm without it.

The Magicbooster Pocket 6K will be fully compatible with all of Canon’s EF lenses according to LucAdapters, but not EF-S models. The Magicbooster fits inside the camera’s throat leaving the mount untouched, and replaces some internal parts of the camera itself in doing so. The unit comprises a small barrel with lens elements at the end. It screws into the camera with the magnifying lens sitting directly in front of the camera’s sensor and behind the IR filter.

Buyers will receive a replacement UV-IR cut filter that the company claims is better than that which is shipped with the camera. Such a degree of installation is required that it isn’t the sort of adapter that can be attached and unattached in a couple of seconds, but it also means there's no need to add and remove the adapter every time you have to change a lens.

Built in ND Filters

The distance between the lightest and the darkest parts of an image is called dynamic range and is measured in stops. Pocket Cinema Cameras have an incredible 13 stops of dynamic range which means they preserve more detail in the lightest and darkest areas of an image than simple video cameras can. This allows you to set exposure for an indoor scene such as a cafe and still retain the details of bright outdoor light coming through a window. You also get more colors than the standard DCI-P3 colorspace used for feature films. Plus DaVinci Resolve Studio is included with the camera, so you get total creative freedom with full exposure adjustment and recovery controls when color grading!

Dual Gain ISO for Exceptional Low Light Performance

In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. This means the higher the ISO number the more sensitivity to light so it’s possible to shoot using natural light even at night! The Pocket Cinema Cameras feature dual gain ISO up to 25,600, which means they're optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain is set automatically as you adjust the ISO setting, so it's easy to capture great images when you don’t have time to set up lights.

Multiple Resolutions and Frame Rates

Depending on the model, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera can shoot in all standard resolutions and frame rates from HD up to DCI 4K and even 6K. You can shoot stills at 21.2 megapixels on the 6K models and 8.8 megapixels on the 4K model. The 6K models will shoot up to 50 fps at 6144 x 3456 16:9 or 60 fps at 6144 x 2560 2.4:1 and 60 fps at 5744 x 3024 17:9. For higher frame rates you can window the sensor and shoot up to 120 fps at 2.8K 2868 x 1512 17:9. You can even work in true anamorphic 6:5 using anamorphic lenses in 3.7K 60 fps at 3728 x 3104. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera records using standard open file formats so you don’t have to waste time transcoding media. Files are compatible with all post production software so you can work with the software of your choice, or use the included DaVinci Resolve Studio. Recording works in industry standard 10-bit Apple ProRes files in all formats up to 4K or 12-bit Blackmagic RAW in all formats up to 6K. Blackmagic RAW is the fastest growing RAW format. Saturation is the strength or purity of a color. More saturated colors are pure and less saturated colors have a percentage of gray in proportionto their hue. Adjusting saturation in Blackmagic RAW images can help make the colors visually pop or become muted.

Sony A1 vs Blackmagic 6K Pro: is 8K REALLY $4,000 better than 6K?

Blackmagic has just announced its latest camera: the Blackmagic Pocket Camera 6K Pro, a $2,495 powerhouse that captures video footage at an uber-high resolution of 6144 x 3456. 

Still, while the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is impressive, its 6K video isn't nearly the headline-getter that 8K video is – and right now, the 8K camera to beat looks like the Sony A1, with its mega-high video resolution of 8640 x 5760. (While the Canon EOS R5 also boasts 8K video, recording limits and overheating issues mean that it isn't quite the full fat 8K machine that the A1 is.)

At first glance, it seems like a no-brainer; 8K is just straight-up better than 6K. The question is, is 8K $4,000 better than 6K? Because that's the question you have to ask, when the Sony A1 costs $6,498 and the Blackmagic 6K Pro is just $2,495. 

Not only is the Blackmagic over 60% cheaper, it also employs the Canon EF mount – home to a much wider selection of much more affordable lenses. So with that $4,003 you're saving, you can buy a whole lot of glass to go with the 6K Pro. 

Obviously, though, things aren't that straightforward…

8K vs 6K (vs 4K vs 1080p)

First, let's go beyond the numbers. The Blackmagic's 6K has a resolution of 6144 x 3456, while the A1's 8K comes in at 8640 x 5760. But what does that actually look like? How much bigger – and how much better – is 8K compared to 6K?

Certainly, 8K is larger than 6K and packs in significantly more detail. However, in real terms, the jump from 6K to 8K isn't anything like as significant as the jump from 4K to 8K – or even 1080p to 4K, for that matter.

The fact is that 6K is already overkill in terms of resolution; 8K is like bringing a grenade to a knife fight. And to the all-important eyeball test, a 6K file is so pixel-rich that the perceptible gains of the extra 2K resolution really aren't that great.

Of course, the fact of the matter is that 8K in and of itself isn't actually the point – at least, not in 2021. Unless you're lucky enough to have an 8K display, you can't even watch 8K content yet. 

No, the real point of 8K at this moment in time is twofold: to provide enough resolution to crop into the frame (to frame close-ups in an interview, for example) or to produce oversampled 4K video – that is, 4K video that is downscaled from an ultra-dense 8K readout. 

Still, you can already achieve that with 6K – cameras like the Panasonic S1H can already downscale 6K video to deliver an insane amount of detail. So, just how much do you really need to oversample your 4K footage? 

Sensor size

Beyond the mere question of resolution, and what you do with it, though, is the canvas on which that resolution is captured. And here is the biggest rub; the Sony A1 possesses a full-frame image sensor, while the Blackmagic has a Super 35 sensor. 

Super 35 is a smaller sensor format, broadly similar in size to APS-C. And on the one hand, that has some benefits; Canon was quick to point out, for example, that the APS-C sized 4K video on the original Canon EOS R cut together well with Super 35 footage shot on its cinema cameras.

However, there are a number of benefits that full-frame video possess over that shot on Super 35 – the most obvious one being the larger pixels. Even shooting at the exact same resolution, whether it's 6K or 4K, the fact that the A1 has a larger sensor means that the individual photosites will be larger. 

These larger sites, having greater physical surface area, are thus able to capture more light – in turn delivering cleaner low light performance and less noise than the smaller sites on a Super 35 sensor.

This manifests as better dynamic range and higher ISO sensitivity. Indeed, while the Sony A1 boasts 15 stops of dynamic range and a native top ISO of 32,000, the Blackmagic 6K Pro claims 13 stops and dual native ISO up to 25,600.

Of course, low light can be mitigated by fast lenses and wide apertures – and this is, again, an area where the difference in sensor size is quite pronounced. As we all know, full frame sensors deliver beautifully shallow depth of field, enabling you to blur out backgrounds and isolate subjects when shooting at wide apertures. 

However, while this creates a striking cinematic look, this isn't always welcome. While shooting wide open to achieve shallow depth of field can be a very deliberate effect, it can also be a much less welcome side effect; if you are shooting at fast aperture purely for the purpose of gathering more light, you don't necessarily want everything to be blurry. 

If you're filming a wedding ceremony in a dark venue, for example, you will probably have to open up the aperture – which means that anything outside your shallow depth of field will be out of focus on a full frame sensor. Thanks to the crop factor of a Super 35 sensor, though, shooting at wide apertures produces a far wider depth of field; an f/1.8 lens produces about the same depth of field as an f/2.75 lens, meaning that you can shoot in lower light without everything falling out of focus. 

That crop factor also affects the focal length, though; a 35mm has an equivalent 53.55mm field of view on a Super 35 camera. So if you were to mount a 35mm f/1.8 on the Sony A1, it would behave as you'd expect – but if you mounted it on the Blackmagic 6K Pro, it would behave like a 53.55 f/2.75 lens. 

The verdict?

So, is 8K $4,000 better than 6K when it comes to the Sony A1 and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro? The answer, somewhat unhelpfully, is "it depends".

If you absolutely, positively have to shoot at a resolution of 8640 x 5760 then yes – the A1 is worth it, because a 6K camera can't achieve that. Likewise, if you want to shoot with an ultra-cinematic shallow depth of field, the full frame sensor of the A1 will make that much more achievable. Its low light performance should also be significantly better.

If, on the other hand, you are only going to be shooting 4K, and simply want oversampled footage to make it packed with even more detail, then the downscaled 6K of the Blackmagic will pack more than enough muscle. Further, if you want to shoot in low light conditions but don't want everything to fall out of focus, the wider depth of field offered by its Super 35 sensor will be far more to your liking. 

As always, the "best" camera is ultimately the right camera for the job. Never judge a camera by its resolution, or its price, alone; examine what job you actually need to get done, and choose the best tool to enable you to do it.
