Red faceUpdate on Amana refrigerator

Okay here’s what I know, the repairman came today and removed the back cover to the door damper. When he did this I heard a BOING. a spring had popped off the damper door. I am unsure whether it happened while he pulled the cover off or if it was already off. He re installed the spring were he thought it went and the door went partially closed. There is also a thermostat that has a plunger to operate the damper door that sort of overrides the manual set point that is accomplished by turning the temperature controller in the fridge section,
This thermostat controls the closing or opening of the damper door, it does not turn on or off the compressor, the stat on the freezer section does that. The adjustment on the temp in the refrigerator just closes or opens the door to a fixed value then the thermostat with the plunger overrides that where the manual fixed position leaves off. It makes sense if you can see a picture but to describe it in words is a nightmare,
The repairman said that the thermostats do not go up on the Amana that operate the damper door. It was really nice to see someone stick out their neck and say something definite, instead of saying something like, well some work and some don’t.
Now, is it fixed,??,,won”t know for a couple days, I have removed the tape off the vents but I have the fridge temp controller on setting 2 ( next to lowest for warm temps) and the temperature is at 38F.

When a refrigerator thermostat is not working, it can cause the entire appliance to malfunction. The thermostat controls the compressor to keep the temperaturecold. If not, you may deal with an inconvenient breakdown and perishable food can spoil. Here are some signs that your fridge has a faulty thermostat and some troubleshootingtips to help you deal with them.

The Refrigerator Is Not Cool Enough

The thermostat is designed to regulate temperature to chill food and beverages. If items don’t seem as cool as they should be, reset the refrigerator thermostat by raising it a degree. It should then turn on or restart. But if it does not, there may be a technical malfunction. To correctly reset the system, unplug the appliance before adjusting the thermostat. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, contact a refrigerator repair technician specializing in your brand of refrigerator.

Unusually Cold Refrigerator

If food freezes inside the fridge or its compartments, the cause may be a faulty thermostat. You can use an appliance thermometer to check the thermostat, or try increasing the temperature a couple of degrees. Then wait a day to check whether the food has become unfrozen. However, this problem often requires the help of a repair specialist and replacement of your old thermostat.

Refrigerator Temperature Fluctuation

The best temperature for a refrigerator is between 30°F and 40°F, but even slight fluctuations can spoil food and allow disease-causing microbes to grow. Refrigerator temperature should be at or below 40°F to keep perishable food cool and fresh, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additional information on recommended temperatures can be found in your appliance manual. If you periodically check the fridge’s temperature, don’t use a glass thermometer, as cold temperatures can damage it.

Sub-Zero Refrigerator Temperature Troubleshooting Tips

Thermostat problems aren’t always the cause of issues with your refrigerator’s temperature. These troubleshooting tips can help figure out why you have a warm refrigerator and determine what course of action to take:

  • Check the set point temperature – For units with an electronic control panel, it should read 38°F. If your fridge has a manual dial, the setting should be between 4 and 6 (it goes from 1, the warmest, to 10, the coolest). Dial controls are featured on Sub-Zero’s 200, 300, and 500 Series refrigerators.
  • Clean the condenser – If you haven’t done so in the past 6 months, dirt may have collected on the condenser coils, affecting refrigerator performance and efficiency. Cleaning the inside of the fridge regularly also helps protect the appliance and prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • Inspect the refrigerator door – A damaged seal or gasket can cause cold air to leak, making it warmer inside and potentially impacting the freshness and safety of food. Also check for damage to the fan, condenser, compressor, or evaporator.

If you’ve taken these steps and still have a warm refrigerator, contact a Sub-Zero refrigerator repair service to find the cause of the problem and provide the appropriate remedy.

My Amana refrigerator/freezer has stopped cooling!

Start Relay

If the refrigerator is not cold enough, the start relay may be defective. The start relay is a small device mounted to the side of the compressor. It provides power to the run winding along with the start winding for a split second at start-up to help get the compressor started. If the start relay is defective the compressor may run intermittently or not at all and the refrigerator will not get cold enough. The start relay should be replaced if defective.

Temperature Control Thermostat

If the refrigerator does not get cold enough the temperature control thermostat might be defective. The thermostat allows power to flow through to the compressor, evaporator fan and condenser fan. If the cooling system fans and compressor are running, but the refrigerator or freezer is not cooling correctly check for an airflow or defrost system problem.

Start Capacitor

If the refrigerator isn't cold enough the compressor might be having difficulty starting. The start capacitor serves as a battery to give the compressor a little boost during start-up. If the start capacitor is burned out the compressor might not be able to start and run as often as it should. Test the start capacitor first with a capacitance meter, they don't fail often. If it's defective, replace it.

Thermistor

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the thermistor might be defective. The thermistor is a sensor which monitors the air temperature. It is connected to the control board. If the thermistor is defective the refrigerator does not cool or may cool continuously.

Temperature Control Board

If the refrigerator is not cold enough the temperature control board might be defective. The temperature control board provides the voltage to the fan motors and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.

Tips for Properly Setting the Controls

How to Check the Controls on your Amana Refrigerator if not Cooling Properly

If your refrigerator is not cooling properly check to make sure the controls are set properly. Below are some things you can quickly check.  Look below for additional information on each topic.

  • Is the refrigerator turned on?
  • Is the cooling function turned on?
  • Are the controls set for the surrounding conditions?

Is the refrigerator turned on?

If the refrigerator is not cooling properly, check to make sure the refrigerator is turned on. Some refrigerators need to be manually turned back on after a power outage or power surge. The refrigerator could also accidentally be turned off during routine cleaning.

For Information on how to turn the refrigerator "Off" and "On", please see your Owner's Manual for specific information on your model.

If you would like to download or view product literature for your appliance, please visit our Manuals and Literature page.

Is the cooling function turned on?

Some refrigerators are equipped with a "Showroom" or "Demo" mode feature.  This mode is used when the refrigerator is on display in a retail store or if you want to turn the cooling off and deactivates all other functions except interior lighting). Showroom mode can be used when going on vacation, see “Vacation and Moving Care” section for proper steps on leaving your refrigerator in this mode for long periods of time.

Are the controls set correctly for the surrounding conditions?

Temperature controls are preset at the factory to the "mid setting" which should be correct for normal household use. The controls are set correctly when beverages are as cold as you would like.

  • If you need to adjust the temperature, wait at least 24 hours between adjustments and then recheck the temperature.
  • To make the Refrigerator colder, adjust the control to the next higher setting. To make the Refrigerator less cold, adjust the control to the next lower setting.
  • Repeat this process until the desired temperature is reached

NOTE: Since control panels vary by refrigerator type, please see your Owner's Manual for specific information on your model.  Below are some examples.

Moreover, is a fridge colder on 1 or 5?

So on a refrigerator what setting is coldest (1 to 5)?On every fridge the rules for the coldest settings are always the following: The numbers on the fridge's temperature dial indicate refrigerant power. The higher the number goes the colder the fridge will maintain. Setting it to 5 will make your fridge the coldest.

Also, is produce or deli colder? The produce / deli slider opens a vent from the main portion of the refrigerator to the beverage drawer. Keeping the switch on the produce setting will allow the most airflow which will make the drawer as cold as possible.

In respect to this, how do I adjust the temperature on my freezer?

Recommended control settings are 0°F for the freezer and 37°F for the fresh food compartment. To view or adjust the current temperature settings, press the Freezer or Fridge pads or "Warmer" or "Colder" pads (depending on model) until the desired temperature setting is displayed.

What is the coldest setting on a deep freezer?

10F to -10F. The coldest setting is 7 which is about -10F, the number _1_ is the warmest setting. You can set freezer to _4_, the recommended setting.
