What should the tire pressure be on a Harley Street Glide?

Springtime: Check Your Tire Pressure! Most Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are equipped with Dunlop® tires; the tire pressures (cold) should be 36psi front and 40psi rear.

How long do Street Glide tires last?

As a general rule, the lifespan of your motorcycle tires should not go over and beyond five years. Some experts suggest that the tire is as good as dead five years after the date of manufacturer. However, you can extend this to ten years.

Whats high mileage for a Street Glide?

For sports bikes, 25, miles can be a lot. Harley-Davidson® motorcycles are built to last much longer. If a bike has good maintenance records, no signs of damage and no oil leaks, even a bike with 40, to 50, miles can be expected to last a long time.

How many miles are left on my tires?

As a general rule, the original tires on a new vehicle or quality replacement tires should last up to 50, miles. However, many factors will have a significant impact on any tire&#;s life and may substantially shorten its life expectancy.

How often do you replace Harley tires?

Tire Age. You should replace the motorcycle tires if they are over five years old. However, this is a general guideline to follow, and it does not apply to all situations. You may be able to use tires that are older than five years if they sat in storage for the first one to three years without extensive damage.

How many miles can I put on motorcycle tires?

Front tire can last about 3, miles while the rear one can last 1, on average. All that exceeds this number is considered quite dangerous. The numbers only apply to tires that have been well-maintained and checked regularly.

How many miles do motorcycle brake pads last?

The average life motorcycle brake pads last are about 20 miles or approximately 32 km. This figure will vary depending on the brake pads&#; compound, how you ride, the conditions you ride in, and how you brake. I have had brake pads last for 30, miles.

How often do motorcycle brake pads need to be changed?

every 20, miles

How often should you change brakes on a motorcycle?

Brake pads should last thousands of miles, and can last tens of thousands of miles, but you should rely on physical indicators of pad life (such as pad thickness, or wear indicator grooves in the pad) to determine how long your pad life, instead of an arbitrary amount of time or miles.

How much does it cost to replace brakes on a motorcycle?

Brakes Services for a Motorcycle Pads will generally run between $30 and $50 a set. For motorcycle rotors, expect to pay a couple hundred dollars per brake pad set or more. Brake changes are relatively quick services, so you may be charged an hour or two for labor, but some shops will be higher.

Do all motorcycle brake pads have wear indicators?

Most, but not all brake pads have wear groove indicators (see top image) that help us identify when we&#;re getting close to the end of the brake pad&#;s life. In the case of the bottom image, the pads are ready for replacement as the wear groove indicator is now absent (almost absent) from both of the brake pads.

How thick should motorcycle brake pads be?

Some manufacturers may specify a minimum thickness for the pad material. In most instances this is somewhere between and mm. The wear indicators are visible without removing the pads from the caliper, though you might need to remove an inspection cover to see them.

Your Harley-Davidson® Tire is cupping?

We see it quite often. We also get some complaints that the Dunlop tires are crap.

First off, let's talk about Dunlop Tire quality. Yes, we sell Dunlops. Yes, we also sell other brands, including Avon, Metzler, Michelin, and others. But not as many as Dunlops.

Dunlop tires are good.

What do we mean they are good?

They are good for mileage.

They are good for wet weather.

They are good for stickiness in the corners.

They are good at stopping power.

Are they great at any of those? No. They are good.

Try and find a tire that does all of those things good. You won't. Yes, we know some of you love your ___________(fill in the blank) tires. Yes, we know you love them because you can corner like you are on rails.

Does everyone ride the corners hard? No. Do some. Yes.

Yes, we know some of you don't like to ride in the rain. Do some. Yes.

Get the point? Harley-Davidson® is trying to find a tire that does all of these things well. They found it with Dunlop tires and some Michelins for certain models.

Now, on to the original topic. Cupping.

What is it?

Cupping or scalloping is uneven wear on the tire. See the photo below.

Cupped Tire

With that said. Your motorcycle can make different sounds when the tires are cupping. We can't articulate the sound with words, but if you want to come in, we will make the sound for you. How does it ride? When you are riding straight and coming into a corner, you can quickly feel like the tire has a step that it came off. Almost as if there is uneven pavement.

What Causes Cupping?

A lot of things cause cupping. The most common two scenarios that cause cupping:

1. Cornering hard. Yes. We know you are an awesome rider. You are the best since Evel Knievel, but if you ride hard in the corners, you should expect a tire that is designed to be "good" in a lot of areas (see above), that it will wear differently.

2. Tire Pressures. Too High or Too low. Traditionally they are low. Yes, we also know you check your tire pressure "all the time." But, why is it that when the tire is evaluated on our bench, it is running 20 pounds when it should be 38? We see this a lot as well. We recommend checking tire pressures before every ride.

3. Hard Braking. If you brake hard. Expect some cupping. Braking hard causes the tire to grab and wear in one direction. When braking is applied to the front tire, the load transfer over flexes the tire.

With all of this said, we see the same exact Dunlop tires getting miles that we do getting Stated differently, one customer comes in and his tire is spent at miles. The next comes in with the same exact model Dunlop and has 16, miles. It becomes very difficult to explain to a customer with miles that another customer is getting They feel they received a defective tire. Factually, they didn't get a defective tire, they just treat the tire differently in their riding preferences and or pressures. In interviewing customers who get a lot of miles. They don't accelerate hard. They don't corner hard. They check the pressures religiously. They ride to relax. One customer said recently to us, "I bought a Harley® to cruise. Don't get me wrong, I corner hard once in a while, but I dont need to lose my buddy in the dust on the corners. I'm not a showoff." Not our words, our customer Mike said that. To that end, once a tire is cupping, there is no turning back. It is gone. You can't adjust your riding habits or pressures and allow the tire to mend itself.

We hope this sheds light on tire cupping. If you are focused on only one specific type of riding (cornering, rain, etc). You can purchase a tire for that type. But if you want a good all around tire. Stick with the OEM Harley-Davidson® Dunlop. Call us biased, but we all ride our own Harley®'s and we all have different riding habits. We don't see cupping on our own Harley®'s.

The Hot-Rod Bagger Is Hotter Than Ever

    by TJ Hinton, on LISTEN

Harley-Davidson revamped its Street Glide Special yet again for the model year in an effort to keep it “special.” First, the factory stuffed the largest non-CVO engine into the frame. Then it boosted the infotainment potential with the new Boom! Box GTS system. Color choices span the spectrum so there should be something for everyone on the palette.

Harley Davidson Street Glide Special Design

The Special just exudes all that is badass about baggers.

The Special just exudes all that is badass about baggers. It starts with the inch front wheel and naked fender down low and the chopped-down smoked windshield up top. Add the blackout treatment that ties right into the custom culture, and you have a solid start on a proper boulevard bruiser.

The relatively new Batwing fairing provides better penetration than did the old barndoor fairing, but of course, this makes for a diminished protective pocket for the rider. That said, I love how the mirrors ride just inside the wingtips where they won&#;t clutter up the flyline one little bit. Inside the fairing, a row of four analog gauges displays the critical metrics along with a handful of indicator lights and LED screens, but the real star of the show here is the new infotainment system.

The Boom! Box GTS rocks a inch “Gorilla Glass” screen that delivers pinch, drag and swipe functionality so you can quickly navigate through the navigation, weather, communications, and music options. Brought your music on a device? Plug it in. Want to talk on the phone? Use the Bluetooth. Share your music with the neighbors? You betcha. Whatever you want to do, within reason, the Special probably has it covered.

The blackout treatment continues across the instrument panel that bifurcates the six-gallon fuel tank. It continues all the way down to where both meet the deep-scoop saddle that slings the rider&#;s butt at a low inches high, providing you have the requisite pound body mass to compress the suspension that far. There&#;s a nice rise to the p-pad so your passenger can enjoy some increased visibility, but the saddle tapers off to nothing over the full rear fender and won&#;t be quite as tour-friendly as a full dresser.

A pair of hard bags provide a total of cubic-feet of storage with some more custom flavor that shows in the stretched-and-dropped trailing corners. All told, the Special hits all the visual high points you&#;d expect from from the MoCo, and I&#;d put it as one of the best-looking in the world.

Harley Davidson Street Glide Special Chassis

You can count on a certain amount of stability and tracking, even at highway speeds, but the trade off will come in the corners, as usual.

Mild steel tubing makes up the double-downtube/double-cradle frame. The structure fully supports the engine to spare the mill from having to pull double duty as a stressed member. Of course, this adds a bit of weight, but at pounds wet, a few pounds here or there will have little impact; it&#;s still going to be a heavy machine.

Steering-head geometry measures out with 26 degrees of rake and inches of trail. That means you can count on a certain amount of stability and tracking, even at highway speeds, but the trade off will come in the corners, as usual. Ride quality is fixed in the front forks, but Showa&#;s Dual Bending Valve technology make them as plush as a non-adjustable unit can be. An emulsion shock takes care of the rear end and comes with a handwheel that allows for easy adjustments so you can quickly dial in for changing passenger/cargo loads sans tools or dirty knees.

New for , a pair of Gloss Black Prodigy wheels ( was cast-aluminum Black Talon) mount the inch front hoop and the inch rear with inches between contact-patch centers, so as “fat” as the bike looks, it&#;s no larger than the average Softail unit. Dual front calipers provide 70 percent of the stopping power with the balance coming from the rear, and the factory makes sure you can use it safely by making the ABS feature part of the standard equipment package.

The tires are pretty fat at /60 up front and /55 out back, so you&#;ve got plenty of traction to work with, and at least one safety net to protect it. Perhaps next year we&#;ll see the traction control and drag-torque features on the Special, though the systems are included in the whole Reflex™ Defensive Rider System (RDRS) that is a $1k option for

Harley Davidson Street Glide Special Drivetrain

The power figures seem to point to the Special&#;s true purpose in life, that of a hot-rod.

Also new for MY19 is the Milwaukee-Eight that is an upgrade from the cubic-inch version in last year&#;s model. The mill carries itself with the same old-school look as the rest of the Mil-8 lineup that benefits from the return of the single cam valvetrain and convergent pushrod-tube geometry. This also returns the nosecone area to a more traditional shape than the Twin Cam ever had, and you can go ahead and pencil me in as a fan.

A pair of four-valve heads cap the mm bores with a mm stroke to give the engine a total displacement of 1, cc and compression ratio of to Oh yeah, as usual it&#;s air-cooled, so there&#;s no radiator to try and hide. The power figures seem to point to the Special&#;s true purpose in life, that of a hot-rod. Full power develops at a low 3, rpm, and there&#;s plenty of it according to the claimed pound-feet of torque. That&#;s right, even with its great mass, this bike will come out of the hole like a champ.

Power flows through a chain-drive primary, a standard clutch and a six-speed transmission before heading to the rear wheel via belt drive. Between the electronic throttle body and the gearing, you can expect something in the neighborhood of exactly 43 mpg; less if you insist on treating every stop sign and red light as an opportunity to practice your holeshot.

Really, it seems like the biggest difference between them is in the engine aesthetics.

Since Indian Motorcycle has once again become a great domestic threat to the reigning King, Harley-Davidson, I thought it would be fair to pick one for this head-to-head. It didn&#;t take long to settle on the Chieftain Dark Horse, so let&#;s get to it.

Indian pared down its front fairing and gave it a more-modern panache overall with increased penetration befitting its hot-rod attitude. Blackout is prevalent, and it even touches on the iconic war bonnet on the front fender, so there&#;s plenty of that custom vibe to match the Special in this category.

The rear body panels are another clear reference to the Indian models of old, but even with the hard bags, the Dark Horse never looks cluttered or busy, just like the Special. Infotainment is a wash as both bikes bring enough to share with the class with all the navigation and trip-planning yummy-goodness you could want.

The anchors and ABS are also constants across the board, and really, it seems like the biggest difference is found in the engine aesthetics. Indian goes for broke with a flathead-style engine that simulates cooling fins in the rocker-box covers with the old parallel pushrod tubes to reinforce the side-valve vibe. Indian picks up a few cubes with its new, punched-out Thunder Stroke against H-D&#;s , and that shows up in the power figures with pound-feet against the Special&#;s pounds o&#; grunt, but the difference isn&#;t noticeable on even the most sensitive the ol&#; heinie dyno.

Price is a wash this year with Indian raising MSRP to $27, on the Chieftain Dark Horse. That&#;s right in line with the Street Glide Special in Vivid Black Special at $27, Honestly, though, when you&#;re spending this much for a bike, if a few hundred bucks makes that much difference to your wallet, you really can&#;t afford it anyway.

    He Said

“At the end of the day, there is little to choose between the Street Glide Special and the Dark Horse. The price margin is too slim to really change someone&#;s brand loyalty, though it could certainly grab a few who are on the fence. As for the Special, I&#;m definitely feelin&#; it. Gotta&#; be one of my favorite bikes right now.”

    She Said

My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton, says, “The contrast on the new Boom Box system is significantly better than previous gens. I usually don&#;t like digital displays, but these new systems are changing my mind. In the lower rpm range, you don&#;t feel the difference with the new Mil-8 engine, but the true test is on the superslab. The bike is surprisingly nimble for its size. It&#;s a comfortable seating position with smooth performance.”
