What’s so horrible about Ethan Allen anyway?

Ethan Allen… Devil big box mass produced crap or awesome source for home decor?  I almost never read a positive review of Ethan Allen. Supposedly, their products are poorly constructed, way overpriced AND they have bad customer service.

(I made my navy blue couch with them, and I found just the opposite. The couch is comfortable, it wasnt that expensive, it came in 5 weeks and when a little bit of welt started to open up, they were over the next day fixing it.)

Let’s talk about their design aesthetic. I dont find it to be so horrible. I actually like some of the stuff. And I would say that they have similar pricing and quality to the stuff and Crate and Barrel and Restoration Hardware. (Also, you can customize anything in a ton of designer fabrics, and all their stuff is American made. )

They stupidly allowed me to take pictures today. I think they are a little heavy handed on the decorating and styling, but if you use your secret samurai shopping skills (Thanks Zhush!), you can find some pieces that are cool, and dont look big box.

I like this bedroom. I like the ikat duvet cover, and I really like the linen slipper chair in the corner. I hate the art.

This bedroom is just eh… the pieces are all ok, but its pulled together in a clean and classic way. I think I like the headboard and the wallpaper.

Thumbs up to the desk and the lamp. Thumbs down to the ottoman’s fabric and the chair’s tufting. Also thumbs down to the orbs on the desk.  Mad love for the lamp.  I also really love that end table used as a nightstand. Done correctly, that table could be very Thomas O Brian.
I hate that rug, but I like the couch and I like the coffee table.

I love the wallpaper and I  love the stripe on the couch. I hate the way they hung that art and I HATE the pillows they put on the couch. Excuse me, I dont hate the pillows, I hate that they put them there.

My favorite thing in the store- those two lamps. Each $169. VERY awesome. Perfect for behind a sofa or on nightstands.I like the drapes, I like the leather couch. I hate those glass candlesticks mostly because you can buy ones like em at CB2 for $12 each and those cost $90. That wall art is awful. But the club chairs are nice. I like the beat up leather and the shape of the chair.

Not bad Ethan Allen. I kinda like this little vignette. I actually really like the plaid ottoman.

So what do you think about Ethan Allen?  Do any of you own anything that you’ve bought there? Or have I been smoking design crack? Spill it!

Ethan Allen furniture... comments on quality

I actually have a lot of experience with Ethan Allen furniture because I used to work there. There seem to be some common misconceptions on this forum. One is that the designers are not educated or trained in design. It is true that not ALL Ethan Allen designers have a degree in interior design, but most do, or have a degree in a related field. No designer is ever hired who has neither experience nor a degree. I myself have a four year degree in interior design from an accredited school. However, no amount of schooling can give you the natural talent that a designer must possess to be successful and make their clients happy with the outcome. It is up to the managers and owners to hire the right kinds of people, so I am sorry that some of you had bad experiences.
Someone mentioned that Ethan Allens are independently owned, but not all of them are. In my area, there are three corporate stores and two franchised stores. They all have the same pricing and the store policies don't vary that much. To those who had problems with the quality of the piece upon delivery, it states in the Ethan Allen warranty that you are given when you buy the furniture, that their policy is to repair OR replace if it is a warranty issue. All the pieces in my store were prepped and inspected before they were delivered, but on occasion something was missed before it went out, and then we serviced it (for free) of course. If it had to be replaced they ordered a new one, without hassling the customer. No they don't automatically just take it back and give you a new one. When you buy a brand new car with a bumper to bumper warranty they don't just give you a new car if something goes wrong, they order the part and fix it for free but they don't just replace the car without ever looking at it to see what's wrong with it. Our store never hassled anyone about replacing a piece if it was needed, but again, it depends on the location.
Quality is a big one! First of all, it seems that most people are still uneducated about veneers and what their purpose is. First of all veneered furniture is more costly and more time consuming to make, not less. It does NOT cost less than a piece of solid wood. Veneers are thinly sliced layers of WOOD that are placed with the grains criss crossed so that it is STRONGER than a piece of solid wood and so it does not warp or crack like solid wood can. The other reason they use them is to achieve a decorative pattern on the wood, which is not easy to manufacture. The Smithsonian has veneered furniture that are examples of high quality craftsmanship BECAUSE they used veneers. Back then if a craftsman could make a fine piece of furniture using veneer, that was the highest level they could rise to. Veneers have been given a bad rep by the cheap furniture made in the 50's and 60's that used veneer where the bonding methods were really bad. Ever since then people either confuse veneer with laminate or a man made product, or they just think it's a cheap way to make furniture, when it's not. I know some people will say I am biased since I worked for EA but it really is true. YES, there are a lot of pieces made overseas, but they are really and truly made at Ethan Allen owned and operated factories, and they still control the quality. Ethan Allen's CEO does not want to put the EA name on it if he is not happy with the level of quality it represents. You can read press releases where he is interviewed if you want to hear his take on things.
Someone said the quality was not consistent throughout the line, but that is not true. It's exactly the opposite. A bedroom set in Tango is made just as well as a bedroom set in Newport. Price point is hugely different, but the quality is not!
The every day pricing is not a "line" it is 100 percent true. All Ethan Allens do it. Ethan Allen had 8 sales a year before that, and not all the pieces were on sale at once. This made things difficult if you wanted to buy a whole room at once. Not all the things you had picked out were on sale, most of the time. They actually lowered ALL the prices to what used to be the sale price, and just said, this is the everyday price. Period. Since then, raw materials have gone up, etc. so on occasion they have raised prices here and there, but not on everything. So the regular everyday price you see on the tag today would have been the sale price they offered three years ago. Why would you be unhappy with that? It wasn't ever going to be any lower than that anyways.
I am sorry if some of you out there have had bad experiences. Thank you to those who had good ones who shared those as well. I truly love Ethan Allen, and I don't like things being said about the company or products that aren't entirely true.

My wife and I recently remodeled our bedroom, which involved a new bed frame. Ethan Allen in Agoura Hills was recommended to us and we were paired up with a very patient designer, Mugdha. Their customer service is top notch, especially since we've never "built" a frame from scratch. They walked us through all of the options, even asked to see a picture of our bedroom to ensure the color scheme and design matched the floors/walls. I would highly recommend them for your furniture needs.

I got lost on my way to the La-Z Boy store and saw a sign for Ethan Allen. I bought two items from them 25 years ago and still love them, so I thought I'd give them a try. Boy, am I glad I did! Holly helped me out and I quickly went from confused and indecisive to ecstatically happy. She has a lot of knowledge about everything in the store, all the nuances of comfort I was unaware of, and she seemed to be a mind reader as far as fabrics I would like. I couldn't be any happier with my shopping experience!

Always quality furnishings. Excellent decor guidance with in-store professional designers. Consistent quality during all past years I’ve been buying from them. If a person needs home furnishings start here and compare. You will recognize the value.

I bought a custom sofa from EA, and it was great from start to finish with all custom options, it is beautiful and very comfortable. Excellent customer service from my sales designer: Drew. A custom fabric that would be railroad as opposed to up the bolt so the application would have no seams showing as I had chosen an option of a bench cushion, and then upgraded to spring down fill.

I purchased an outdoor side table, on display in store as outdoor table; loved it so purchased two more online; approximately two weeks after receiving second purchase of 2 tables, saw that discoloration had occurred in the one placed outdoors when compared to the two new ones; returned the one to store from where purchased; Ethan Allen refuses to refund the other two, nor provide a return label, states I am beyond 30 days for notification. I say take your business elsewhere. Too many furniture stores in this country to deal with this indignity - time consuming, not worth the price, perhaps why they are not doing so well in overall sales.

We bough a bedroom set and the lamps on 12/13/2021. It took a few months to receive a complete bedroom set. But the lamps are still out of stock. Delivery date for the lamps supposed to be in 8 weeks but now it is the end of May, which would be more than 6 months since the purchase.

We have purchased furniture from EA in the past and are satisfied with their products. We went to add two chairs to our dining set. When we made the purchase we were told of the $200 delivery fee. At that time we had already committed to the chairs and didn't want to walk away. We should have. On hindsight it is ridiculous and annoying. I asked if the chairs could be delivered to the store and we could pick up, but this was not an option. If you're buying a bunch of furniture, $200 is nothing. If you're buying 2 chairs, it is insane. Will not even consider going here for small purchases any longer. Probably reconsidering going here at all.

I purchased a living room set (couch, recliner, entertainment center) in 2017 from your Jacksonville office. I had some damage occur in December 2020 and January 2021. I submitted a claim in February and was denied because it was out of the reporting window. However, it took me TWO weeks to get ahold of someone in order to file said claim, after I was provided the number by one of the Ethan Allen associates and my order #**.

After noting the delay, I was later told by your customer service representative and Guardsman that the delay in reporting was my fault and it could have be done online. Guardsman then took 3 weeks to get back to me. If it is critical that reporting be done in a specific time frame, then why is a delay getting back to me acceptable? Specifically, I am having issue with the quality of your products and the guardsman furniture protection you sold. The finish has worn off on the top of the entertainment center and the couch stains/discolors easily.

I have filed a complaint with the BBB for guardsman furniture protection you sold me. Not only did they take multiple attempts to respond to the complain and 30 days, they don’t answer the phone, return messages, and you stay on hold for hours. They report these issues and delays to COVID, but I am not afforded the same rights. Refusing coverage during the pandemic to an essential healthcare worker because it is out of the time frame is despicable.

I didn’t report it in the appropriate time frame due to working at Cedars Sinai, a 1000 bed trauma center in downtown Los Angeles, during the peak and also didn’t feel comfortable having someone in my home until vaccinated which resulted in delay of reporting. My protection plan provided by Ethan Allen does not have this disclaimer. I emailed Ethan Allen customer service who said they would forward my request for help to the regional team, which I never heard back from.

After having to reach out twice, the same customer service representative who initially disregarded my email from the local store called me to inform me that she spoke to Guardsman on my behalf and there was nothing more she or Guardsman can do for me. Not everything is black and white, this is a very fluid situation. Like travel carriers have adjusted their policies to account for things outside of control due to pandemic, exceptions can be made for certain circumstances. NO THANKS HERE TO HEALTHCARE HEROES.

I complained to the store while the delivery men were still here. Pictures were sent over and they told me that they would take care of it. They were calling corporate. That was 5 weeks ago. The couch is now getting lumpy, the back cushions are indenting and not bouncing back, they are also getting out of shape because the covering is slipping around.

Having spent more than $4,000 on furniture from Ethan Allen, I would have expected better service. I ordered furniture on 12/3/20 and I was given a 3/6/21 delivery date and am now being told not expect delivery until sometime in May. Totally unacceptable when they have the use of your deposit for months and you have no living room furniture. It may be great quality but if you don't have the furniture, what good is their quality.
