2011 BMW 328i - Gas Cap

A fuel cap keeps your fuel clean by sealing off the opening to your gas tank, keeping out grit and also preventing fuel vapor release from your vehicle. You may need to replace your fuel cap if your cap no longer tightens properly, your Check Engine Light comes on, or if you're smelling fuel from the rear of the vehicle. A missing, worn, or broken cap can cause up to 30 gallons of annual fuel waste for a vehicle. We have a selection of fuel caps for many vehicles at O'Reilly Auto Parts. Check out what we have in stock and find the right fuel cap for your vehicle.

Over time, a gas tank may begin to corrode and fail. When this happens, gas may leak from the vehicle, having an effect on fuel economy, and potentially leading to a dangerous fire or explosion. If gasoline is leaking from the gas tank, you should be able to notice the leak underneath the rear of the vehicle accompanied by a noticeable smell. It is important to inspect the kind of fluid leaking to ensure that it is gasoline. Gasoline may also leak from fuel lines and may require a different repair than a leak from the fuel tank. Finding the origin of the leak will help you and the mechanic determine what repairs will need to be made.

How this system works:

The gas tank is a reservoir for gasoline used to power the combustion engine in an automobile. Gasoline is filled from outside the vehicle, down a filler neck, and into the tank. Tank size and material varies based upon the size and make of the vehicle. Gas tanks are typically made of metal or plastic and may be built with the fuel pump inside the tank. Whether or not the fuel pump inside the tank or not, fuel is pumped from the tank to the engine where it mixes with air and is burned. A leak in the fuel tank may be dangerous and cause flammable vapors to escape the tank.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Corroded/Leaking Gas Tank: Over time, gas tanks may corrode and start leaking. In areas where there is a lot of snow and salt, corrosion may be more prevalent and more rapid. Depending on the location of the leak (e.g. if it is on a seam) there may be an increased risk that the leak will become worse if not dealt with.

  • Punctured Gas Tank: Even though gas tanks are typically made from sturdy materials, it is possible that a gas tank could be punctured. Punctures are more serious and may require the entire tank to be replaced.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the origin of the leak and what repairs will necessary. The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining the nature and cause of the leak and the cost of any repairs that need to be made.

How it's done:

A mechanic will first inspect the ground underneath the gas tank to see if gasoline has pooled under the tank. The mechanic should then inspect the tank itself to identify the source of the leak. He or she should then determine if the original tank can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced completely. If the tank needs to be replaced, the mechanic will first drain the old tank. He or she should then disconnect the original fuel lines, inspecting them to see if they if they need to be replaced. The mechanic will then remove the straps that hold the tank and drop it. The mechanic should install the new tank ensuring that all the appropriate parts are reconnected. He or she will then add fuel to the tank and start the vehicle to make sure the fuel system is working properly.

How important is this service?

Any gas leak can become extremely dangerous if not dealt with. Besides the worsening fuel economy, your vehicle may also be susceptible to fire or an explosion. A mechanic may be able to repair the gas tank without having to fully replace it. If you notice a gas smell or gas pooling underneath the gas tank you should let a mechanic inspect your vehicle. Having a mechanic inspect your gas tank can help recover lost gas mileage and keep your passengers safe. Gas leaks will only become worse over time and should be dealt with immediately.

What is a Gas Cap?

Are you from one of those places where they don’t let you pump your own gas? If not, then you should know what a gas cap is. You know what? Even if you are, you should know what a gas cap is. It’s pretty straightforward and simple. The gas cap is the cap for your car’s fuel tank. It’s what you unscrew when it’s time to put gas in your car, and what you put back on when you’re done fueling up. Pretty simple, yeah? You might think that a gas cap simply serves the purpose of putting a lid on the fuel tank, so that the gas doesn’t spill out as you drive. And that’s certainly a big part of it. But it’s not the only part of it. Gas caps serve a bigger purpose than that. They trap in fuel vapors that would otherwise leak out of the system. This allows the car to use the vapors, increasing performance and fuel mileage. And it keeps the vapors from leaking into the atmosphere, which is a vital part of the car’s emissions system (and the reason your car can hopefully pass an emissions test). The cap also keeps harmful elements from entering the car’s gas tank. From bigger items like leaves, sticks, and pebbles, to smaller debris like dust and dirt, the cap is a barrier that protects the fuel tank, and keeps the gas as clean and pure as possible. So, yeah. That little plastic device that you never really think of is actually quite important, even if it’s simple. But it can wear out over time. The more you unscrew and screw it back in, the more you wear out the seal. Even a tiny imperfection in the cap can allow vapors to escape. Or you can easily damage it by, you know, dropping it, or damaging that part of your car. Or, if it doesn’t have a leash on it, perhaps you’ve simply forgotten to put it back on, and drove away. No judgement (okay, maybe a little judgement).

Symptoms of a failing Gas Cap

Check engine warning light comes on

Hey look, it’s your favorite indicator light. Yeah, I get it. Your car is driving fine, so why do you need to listen to that tiny little light, right? Well, because you might be able to stop a little problem, like a malfunctioning gas cap, before it turns into a bigger problem. If your gas cap isn’t creating a complete seal, it will allow fuel vapors to exit the system. This will be detected by the evaporative emission control system, which will notice that something is funky. And just like that, your check engine warning light will come on.

Gas cap warning light

Oh great, another warning light! Many modern cars have a gas cap warning light, to let you know when the gas cap isn’t on. Usually this is because you simply forgot to put the cap back on. But sometimes it’s because the cap is on, but not forming a good seal. This can be due to the threading wearing down, or just damage on the gas cap. But if the light is on, even though you’ve put the gas cap back on, you probably have a faulty cap.

Gas cap doesn’t screw on

You also might notice that the gas cap isn’t screwing on correctly. Maybe it never clicks into place, or maybe you can just feel the cap being loose, or not holding. Either way, that’s not good, and that will allow vapors to escape the fuel tank, and debris to enter it.

Car cabin smells of raw gasoline

There's a place and time for everything. And the gas station is the place and time for the smell of gas. Not when you're out driving your car. If you notice that you smell raw fuel while you’re in your car, it could be due to an issue with the gas cap.

How urgent is a Gas Cap replacement?

You can safely drive your car with a broken gas cap. But if you don’t address the issue, it will cause engine performance issues, poor fuel mileage, and cause your car to fail an emissions test. So, maybe just get it replaced.

Replacing the fuel tank in a BMW 328i E90

Tolyan. Stripped naked. Funny, with protruding knees like a hockey player's shin guards. Holding on to dick. Here do not miss the moment when she already realizes that this is different, but will not be able to stop the orgasm.

My hand began to slide smoothly along her thigh towards its target. I started stroking the inner thigh and noticed that my mother-in-law spread her legs a little. Then I grew bolder and began to act more actively. With my second hand, I hugged my mother-in-law by the shoulders and lightly touched her full and delicious chest with my hand.

She shuddered and looked at me.
