Silver Laced Polish Chicken

Cackle Hatchery® offers for sale the bearded variety of the Silver Laced Polish chicken breed. This breed was thought to have originally come from the Netherlands but got its name when it was transported from Poland and introduced to England. This very old domesticated breed of poultry is mentioned as early as the sixteenth century in history. Several varieties were admitted to the American Standard of Perfection from 1874-1996.

The Polish breed is noted for being one of the most beautiful and ornamental breeds. They are prized exhibition and show fowl. The bearded and non-bearded of each variety can be found at shows throughout the United States. The Silver Laced Polish chicken is the most striking in appearance of the “Poland Fowls.” They have a full crest of feathers that grow out of a knob on the skull and large cavernous nostrils. Their plumage is silvery white, each feather laced with lustrous black. Breeders have worked for years to perfect the black lacing in the feathers. Hens lay small white eggs and are non-setters.

Cackle Hatchery® offers the BEARDED variety in Golden Laced Polish, White Polish, Silver Laced Polish and Buff Laced Polish. For the NON-BEARDED variety we offer the White Crested Black Polish, Blue Polish and the Splash Polish.

White Crested Polish Bantams

The Polish is an unusual and beautiful bird with pretty soft plumage, delicate features and a large crested pompom on their heads.
They are absolute Divas and so, so fun to own and be around. They love human contact and will perch on your shoulder like a parrot chatting to you! They do make wonderful pets although not robust with being handled by young children. They need a gentle touch but will love the contact and attention! They have a plucky yet gentle nature, they are very inquisitive and want to be a part of everything that’s going on.
They do need extra care than your average chicken but if you want a pet that will love you and your cuddles and want to be with you in the garden then the Polish is for you!

Polish Bantam Suitability

The Polish chicken is not ideal for the first-time chicken keeper and is more of an aviary bird, they will not cope well in a mixed flock of larger breeds and SHOULD NEVER BE PUT WITH HYBRIDS.
They are delicate and can easily be shocked, spooked or affected by their environment and the elements, they like to be warm and dry and will need extra care. They cannot be put in a free roaming field, they will not survive, they are very much a back garden pet chicken.
They can fly fairly well and love to perch, it is essential for them to have an area either in their house or in their run where they can feel safe on a perch up high looking down on the goings ons.
Poultry tonic or multi vitamins should be given regularly.

Known in the U.K. as the Poland or Polish, it is one of the oldest pure breed chickens in Europe it’s classed as a bantam sized pure breed and recorded back as early as the 16th century.
They received classification at the first poultry show in London in 1845 at this time they were available in only four colours, now available in lots of colours including the stunning laced in black, gold and chamois, chocolate and black splash, plain gold, khaki, red, white, blue, black and are also available as frizzles.
Polish hens will lay a good number of small white eggs at about 4-5 a week in the summer months. they start laying at around 8-10 months old, they are generally classed as a non-sitting bird, but they can occasionally become broody.

Polish & Crested

Contrary to belief, this breed did not orginate in Poland. They were named after the Polish army’s feathered caps because it closely resembled their feathered crests. The chickens originated in Spain but were then brought to Holland, and eventually the Dutch perfected their coloring. They became a popular bird in France, then started appearing in the U.S. around the 1830s and 40s. They are a great breed and are docile and even-tempered. They are easily surprised and sometimes nervous due to their feathers limiting their eyesight. This makes them more vulnerable to predators. {{br}}Blue coloring can result in black, blue, or splash feathering, blue is not a guaranteed color. {{br}} Purpose: Ornamental Production: 100 Small White Eggs/Year Temperament: Gentle, Active Mature Weight: 4-5 lbs. Hardiness: Heat Hardy But Not Cold Hardy Broodiness: Rarely Comb Type: V Comb

Tolbunt Polish Chicken

The Tolbunt Polish is a light, soft feathered pure breed, they are a Polish chicken but the color pattern is Tolbunt hence the name. They are recognized by their large crests and beautiful tolbunt patterning. This is a pattern of brown, black and white. They are a calm docile bird ideal for confinement or urban situations. The hens can be quite chatty and the roosters can be friendly. Children love to hold Polish chickens and play with their hair. They can make great companions.Need to add some character and spice to your flock, this is the breed. We call them the rock and roll chickens, punk rock or glamor girls! So beautiful and captivating like a work of art. All your neighbors will be envious of their beauty.

They make a lovely pet and will often run to their owner for food. Hens will lay around 120 white medium sized eggs a year, not bad for a small bird.  There are more than ten plumage colors to choose from for general Polish chickens including Tolbunt – a very rare and much sought after color pattern.  The color pattern is not easy to maintain and do, takes a lot of work for us. They come in frizzled and smooth feathers. We are very proud of our line and have sought after for strong genetics and coloring.  Our breeding flock can tolerate the harsh Vermont winters and hot summers. We are pleasantly surprised on their hardiness. They are truly a work of art, a must site to see!

Extra care and maintenance must be given to their crests as it can restrict their vision sometimes causing startled behavior. We like to put the crest sometimes in a ponytail! When growing we consider them more fragile and they do grow slower than other chickens similar in age so keep in mind. On the flock hierarchy they would be considered on the lower end so we don’t recommend putting them in with more dominant birds.

Polish chickens are on the Livestock Conservancy List as “watch” status. Polish chickens in general tend to get Marek’s Disease – a very deadly uncurbable chicken disease. We vaccinate all our birds for this disease and offer that safety to our customers. It is the right thing to do. Remember, we are a farm not a hatchery so our flock is smaller in size. There is a limit on the number of birds and eggs you can order so we can make sure to meet demand. This is one of our more popular breeds so please keep in mind you might be waiting longer than expected for this breed.

Feed Recommendations: we recommend starting baby chicks out with Sugar Feather Farm chick starter for the first 3 weeks, then switch to our Chicken Grower. Use the Grower Feed until they hit maturation (which is when they start to lay) then switch to Sugar Feather Farm Adult Feed.

We highly recommend using the Oil of Oregano in their water daily as a supplement to aid with digestion and overall health.

History of the Polish

The Poland or Polish is one of the oldest poultry breeds, but nothing to do with Poland! The name comes from ‘Polled’ referring to the crested poll that distinguishes the breed. Poland fowl had a class in the first London poultry show in 1845 and the breed was standardized in 1865.

Polish chickens are listed in the APA Standard of perfection. The tolbunt pattern is not recognized.

We absolutely love this breed! They are hilarious, Polish are fun. Very quirky, friendly, clumsy and silly. Our kids just love handling them. They make great eye candy and conversation starters. We get a lot of people asking about this breed when they visit. All visitors are captivated when they come to the farm.
