For Destiny 2’s Season of the Drifter, Bungie’s introduced a questline where you’ll have to choose a side for the first time ever. You can either side with the Drifter, or stay loyal to the righteous Vanguard - a tough choice indeed.

Depending on which side you choose, you’ll receive a different reward package. Right now we don’t have info on what goodies are lurking inside, but going by the lengthy questlines, they’re sure to provide some decent loot.

Below we’ve put together a simple breakdown of both the Drifter and Vanguard questlines so you can get to them as soon as they launch.

We’ll update this page once we know what rewards you’ll earn for each questline. Stay tuned!

Credit goes to light.gg for the info.

Here's how to get your hands on Thorn, the returning Exotic Hand Cannon which you'll definitely want to add to your collection - trust us.

How to start the Allegiance Quest

To unlock this quest, you'll need to have completed The Drifter's initial Gambit Prime and The Reckoning quest steps up until the point you've got yourself some tier 1 Gambit Prime Armour.

Once you've done all of this, go ahead and speak to The Drifter. He'll then give a choice between siding with him, or the Vanguard.

Do pay attention to the small print when you're making a choice, as they both have different repercussions.

Vanguard Questline - “The Investigation”

Quest Step #1 - “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”

“You’ve chosen to steer clear of the Drifter. You should probably tell your new friend Aunor...

- Find a terminal in the Tower Hangar where you can compose an encrypted message.

Quest Step #2 - “A Message of Solidarity”

”Aunor is one of the Hidden, a covert group of Guardians who gather sensitive intelligence. You’ve heard rumors that they’re embedded on just about every active Vanguard front, including the Tower. With your message in hand, you begin to look around, hoping to find one of them. Maybe they can get your message to Aunor.”

-Find the Hidden agent in the Tower Hangar to drop off your message.

Quest Step #3 - “Wiretapping The Annex”

”Aunor wants you to bug Drifter’s new haunt in the Annex. She believes that eavesdropping on Drifter remotely will yield valuable intel on his next move.”

- Find suitable locations in the Annex to plant audio surveillance devices.

Quest Step #4 - “Surveillance”

"That's one to check off our bucket list," Ghost remarks dryly. "Let's see if the feed's working."

- Return to the Tower Hangar terminal you used to author a message to Aunor.

- Activate the terminal to monitor the bugs you just planted.

Quest Step #5 - “Sting Operation”

“You picked up a lead while you were spying on the Drifter's conversations. He's sending someone to pick up an important shipment from Spider. Maybe you can get there first…”

Visit the Spider in the Tangled Shore.

Quest Step #6 - “A Reasonable Price”

”Spider is willing to stop trading with the Drifter...for the right price. He’s asking for quite a lot of Glimmer. You’re not happy about the arrangement, nor do you trust Spider, but after a quick consultation with Ghost, you both agree it’s likely worth it. Spider does keep his word after all.”

- Pay off Spider.

Quest Step #7 - “Looking For a Lead”

”Spider told you Drifter might be planning something on Titan. Aunor agrees it’s worth taking a look around. Without any sense of where to start, you set a course for the Rig.”

- Complete a Heroic reprise of adventure “Siren Song” on Titan.

Quest Step #8 - “Prime Research”

”Keep spying on the Drifter for Aunor by playing his games. Drifter knows your true motivations, but he also needs Motes.”

- Bank Motes (50) while playing Gambit or Gambit Prime.

Quest Step #9 - “Lifeguard Duty”

”Aunor says that the Drifter has been flooding the Crucible with his followers. She’s worried that Drifter’s fake-Dredgens will collide with genuine Dredgens, and someone might get legitimately killed. But your reputation precedes you. If you’re there as a lifeguard, people will likely behave.”

- Defeat Guardians (25) in the Crucible.

Quest Step #10 - “Bomb Threat”

”You’ve extracted a number of keywords from your surveillance transcript that suggests, perhaps, the Drifter has planted explosives somewhere - but the Drifter’s Gambit takes place throughout the solar system. They could be anywhere. You resolve to head up to the Derelict to begin you investigation. Maybe there’s a clue there somewhere.”

- Enter the activity “Mystery and Potential” via the Gambit Director and search the Derelict for some kind of clue.

Quest Step #11 - “The Survival Guide”

”After investigating the Drifter’s Haul, you discovered he has hidden messages around the EDZ for his protege. One of those tapes could contain the final piece of evidence that you and Aunor need to prove for once and for all that the Drifter is up to no good.”

- Search the EDZ for Drifter’s tapes. Once tape can be found near computer consoles in each of the following patrol areas and Lost Sectors: Trostland, Skydock IV, Flooded Chasm, Soujourner’s Camp, Excavation Site XII, Winding Cove, and Scavenger’s Den.

Quest Step #12 - “Hard Truths”

”You are the Guardian of the Last City. You live by your principles: loyalty, honor, justice. It chafes at you that you’ve heard messages the Drifter intended for someone else. You send him a message to let him know - and further, that you intend to visit him in person.”

- Visit Drifter in the Annex of the Tower.

- Visit Spider in the Tangled Shore.

Quest Step #2 - “Shady Deal”

”You’ve discovered that Spider has a whole array of illegal goods for sale to those who know what to ask for. Among those is “the jerky” that Drifter asked you to pick up.”

- Purchase The Jerky from the Spider.

Quest Step #3 - “Dead Drop”

”The Jerky is dialed into a Fallen transponder somewhere on Titan. You’ll need to pick up the goods in person to complete your errand for Drifter.”

- Complete a heroic reprise of adventure “Thief of Thieves” on Titan.

Quest Step #4 - “Show Your Strength”

- Defeat Guardians (25) in the Crucible.

Quest Step #5 - “Time to Regroup”

Destiny 2: the Allegiance quest guide

A new story quest will be available later today in Destiny 2 and you’ll need to make a few tough choices.

This week sees the releases of two new Gambit Prime Maps, the Thorn Exotic quest and the Allegiance quest.

Ultimately, you’ll need to choose where your loyalties lie between The Drifter and the Vanguard, and your choice will have ramifications for future Destiny 2 story missions.

We’re going to take a look at both branches to help you make the best decision. Alternatively, you could just go with your gut and wing it - I’m not your mum.

There are 12 steps to each branch, so prepare to do a bit of grinding. You’ll be rewarded with a loot package and some tasty lore for your efforts.

Destiny 2: Allegiance quest

You may have noticed items drop at the start of Season of the Drifter from Aunor Mahal, and the accompanying lore.

The Drifter has been anointing faux Dredgen by means of his Gambit scam, and the Praxic Order isn't one bit pleased. Archiving these messages goes towards a Triumph and some of the best lore we've had in Destiny 2 since launch.

These messages give a bit of backstory to the Allegiance quest and may help you choose a side.

To unlock this quest, you must have completed the first few Gambit Prime and The Reckoning quest steps up until the point you have collected a Tier 1 piece of armour.

That is, you have deposited a Weak Mote into The Reckoning Mote bank and successfully completed a run, winning yourself a piece of armour for Gambit Prime.

Once you've spoken to The Drifter after doing this, you'll unlock the Decision Point and can choose your side.

Destiny 2: The Drifter - Honor Among Thieves

The first step in The Drifter branch is pretty straightforward. The Drifter asks you to pay Spider a visit in the Tangled Shore, where you’ll need to purchase some Jerky.

It costs 50,000 Glimmer, so you may need to find a few chests and explore a Lost Sector or two if you don't have enough.

Far from being a pork product, this item is used to locate a transponder on Titan. Once you arrived on Titan, complete a Heroic version of the Thief of Thieves adventure.

After that, head back to the Annex. The Drifter then mentions that an old enemy, Shin Malphur, is in the EDZ somewhere. So, naturally, you need to head to the Crucible to defeat 25 Guardians to show off your strength.

The next step is to head into Gambit or Gambit Prime and bank 50 Motes, which should be easy enough to complete. Once you’ve banked those Motes, it’s time to do a few Strikes.

You’re looking to collect meat and fuel from Cabal and Vex Strike bosses respectively. For the Vex, complete the likes of The Pyramidion. For Cabal, try tree of Probabilities or The Arms Dealer.

Once you’ve gathered enough resources, open the Gambit Director and enter the Mystery and Potential activity. You’re looking for a tape from The Drifter, so visit him again once you find it.

He’ll send you back out to find more tapes in the EDZ. You can find them near computer consoles in Trostland, Skydock IV, Scavenger’s Den, Winding CoveFlooded Chasm, Soujourner’s Camp and Excavation Site XII.

Once you’ve found them all, head back to see The Drifter. He’ll give you a Crew loyalty package for all your hard work.

Destiny 2: Vanguard - The Investigation

So you’ve decided to side with Zavala and the Vanguard - how noble of you!

Your first job is to find a terminal in the Tower Hanger to compose an encrypted to Aunor Mahal, a member of the Praxic Order and member of The Hidden. Once that’s sent, you’ll need to search the Tower Hangar to find a Hidden agent and pass on your message.

The agent wants you to spy on The Drifter, so you’ll need to search the Annex for suitable places to plan listening devices. Once you’ve done that, return to the Hangar terminal you used earlier to monitor the bugs you planted.

You catch wind that The Drifter is on his way to see Spider in the Tangled Shore, so pop over to see him first. He’ll demand a large sum of Glimmer in exchange for ceasing his operations with The Drifter.

He also gives you a tip-off, so head over to Titan complete a Heroic version of the Siren’s Song adventure.

After this, you’ll be asked to spy on The Drifter again, so jump into Gambit or Gambit Prime and bank 50 Motes. Aunor will then say that she’s worried The Drifter’s fake Dredgens will clash with real Dredgens, so you’ll need to jump into the Crucible and defeat 25 Guardians.

Next, pull up the Gambit Directory and enter Mystery and Potential and look for a clue - the tape from earlier. Once you’ve discovered the tape, head to the EDZ and search for the rest of the missing tapes.

As before, you're searching Trostland, Skydock IV, Scavenger’s Den, Winding CoveFlooded Chasm, Soujourner’s Camp and Excavation Site XII.

Once you’ve completed that, you’ll receive a message that was intended for The Drifter, so go and see him in the Annex - good luck.

For siding with the Vanguard, you’ll get the Warlock Aunor Lore book and the Praxic Loyalty Package.

And that’s it! You can check out our guides to see what Exotic and Pinnacle weapons are coming to Destiny 2,how to boost your power to 640 and our guides on Gambit Prime and The Reckoning.

You'll be able to visit Xur and begin the Invitations from the Nine activity this Friday and Tier 3 of The Reckoning will be available to play.

Destiny 2 Allegiance quest: All Stand with Drifter or Vanguard decision steps explained

Destiny 2's Allegiance quest is something new for the series - a decision to be made between two factions as part of the story.

Not only does the decision to stand with the Drifter or the Vanguard change how you interact with certain characters, but it also changes the type of missions you'll play - and could have wider story implications down the line.

It's worth nothing this has nothing to do with the Thorn quest, which was released at the same time during Forsaken's Season of the Drifter - so feel free to do that quest entirely separately when you are ready.

On this page:

How to start the Destiny 2 Allegiance quest

If you've just started the Season of the Drifter, you won't have access to the Allegiance quest right away. Visit The Drifter and complete the various steps that introduce both the Gambit Prime and the Reckoning modes.

This includes completing a Gambit Prime bounty, then by investigating the Weak Synthesizer you receive to create a Weak Mote using one of the Synths rewarded from Gambit Prime matches to spend in the Reckoning mode. Once you have spent it, then completed a round, win or lose you'll then be able to get started with the Allegiance quest.

destiny_2_allegiance_decision_3

Now visit The Drifter again to get the Drifter or Vanguard choice. As to what you should choose, it's entirely up to you based on your experiences with The Drifter so far.

If you want to be practical about it, then look at the steps for each choice below, and see which you fancy completing. There is a lot of overlap between the two, so you won't be missing much, so perhaps go with a gut feeling!

  • Monitor feed by visiting the terminal in the Hangar

Season of the Lost is here, with new Exotics such as the Ager's Scepter and the long-awaited arrival of crossplay. New activities include the Wayfinders Voyage, the Astral Alignment activity and finding Atlas Skew, Trivial Mystery, Enigmatic Mystery, Ascendant Mystery, Data Cache, Parallax Trajectory and Ascendant Anchor locations. Elsewhere, we've seen new Nightfall weapons such as the Uzume RR4, Plug One.1 and Hung Jury SR4. Other recent new features include transmog and materials Synthstrand, Synthcord and Synthweave, the Splicer Gauntlet and Decrypted Data used to upgrade it.

Destiny 2's Allegiance Vanguard and Drifter rewards

Once you found the seven EDZ tapes, you to return to Ikora or the Drifter respectively to receive your reward - either a Crew or Praxic Loyalty Package.

Inside is one piece of Vanguard or Drifter gear at Powerful Gear level, as well as a small number of consumables. It's pretty underwhelming, and offers nothing unique beyond some Triumphs.

However, let's assume learning more about The Drifter is the real reward, as well as the possibility that completing this Allegiance quest might influence some character interactions to come. It'll be interesting to see what happens!

Decision Point, Allegiance quest line - Destiny 2

The Decision Point step of the Allegiance quest in Destiny 2 is the first major choice players have ever made. Depending on what side you choose will result in an entirely different point of view of a singular set of events. The decision will also affect how the Drifter treats you, as well as other characters in the story.

Whether you want to figure out what happens for both sides – Drifter and Vanguard – or whether you just need to get some answers, we’ve got the whole Decision Point quest line covered.

Decision Point

The first step of the Allegiance quest is the Decision Point. Go and speak with the Drifter and make your decision. You will have only two choices: stand with the Drifter or stand with the Vanguard. Deciding who to stand with, Vanguard or Drifter, is a tough choice, and your decision will affect how characters behave. Furthermore, depending on your choice, you will experience different quest lines, receive different rewards, and may be locked out of lore Triumphs.

Your decision is character-based, so you can choose the other side on another character.

Destiny 2 Decision Point Allegiance Drifter Honor Among Thieves

Stand with the Drifter – Honor Among Thieves

Choosing to stand with the Drifter will begin the Honor Among Thieves quest.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Drifter Black Market Deals

Black Market Deals

Drifter tells you he regularly does business with the Spider. Spider is all too happy to supply Drifter’s scams with equipment and fresh fodder, and he has a fresh shipment waiting for pick up. “Ask him for ‘the jerky,’” Drifter tells you, winking.

  • Visit Spider in the Tangled Shore.

Shady Deal

You’ve discovered the spider has a whole array of illegal goods for sale to those who know what to ask for. Among those is “the jerky” that Drifter asked you to pick up.

  • Purchase The Jerky from Spider 50,000 Glimmer.

Check out our guide on how to get Glimmer fast if you don't have enough to buy the Jerky. The Jerky is an item that reads “Coordinates to Golden Age salvage collected by the Fallen on Titan. Essential to the Drifter’s new Gambit.”

Dead Drop

The Jerky is dialled into a Fallen transponder somewhere on Titan. You’ll need to pick up the good in person to complete your errand for Drifter.

  • Complete a heroic reprise of adventure “Thief of Thieves” on Titan.

Kill thieves to recover repair tools. Defeat the supply thieves, return to the cache, and hold out against the Fallen.

Show Your Strength

Drifter’s concerned that his old enemy, Shin Malphur, is roaming the EDZ. As a pre-emptive show of strength, he wants you to get into the Crucible and make it a bad day to be a Gunslinger.

  • Defeat 25 Guardians in the Crucible.

Motes! Fast!

“Okay, You bought us some time, but we gotta pick up the pace. Work on an accelerated timeline. Listen. I need you to get as many Motes as you can. Route ‘em straight to me. I’ll explain everything later.” – The Drifter

  • Bank 50 Motes in Gambit or Gambit Prime

Farm to Table

“Good. Good. We got Motes – those’ll keep the defenses runnin’ for a while. But, we’re gonna need fuel and we’re gonna need food. Lots of food.” – The Drifter

  • Gather fuel by defeating Vex strike bosses. Gather meat by defeating Cabal strike bosses.

For the Farm to Table portion, use the Inverted Spire and Arms Dealer Strikes. Both of these bosses don’t have lengthy immune phases and can be killed immediately.

Destiny 2 Drifter's Hideaway Mystery and Potential

Drifter’s Hideaway

“All right. We got everything we need, kid. Uh… If you wanna bring it all up to the Derelict, I… maybe… left a message for you up there.” – The Drifter

  • Enter the activity “Mystery and Potential” via the Gambit Director and search the Derelict for the tape the Drifter made for you.

Follow the right-hand catwalk around into the rear of the Derelict where a shipping container lies open. Inside on the table is a recording, interact with it and listen to what Drifter has to say.

Cold Feet

“You heard it? You heard the tape? Ah, damn. Damn! I didn’t expect you to just go and DO it. Listen, kid, I got the jitters about this. Come see me before you go lookin’ for the rest of those stupid tapes.” – The Drifter

  • Visit the Drifter in the Annex of the Tower.

Hidden Messages

Drifter has left a series of personal message for you in the EDZ. Naturally, he won’t tell you where you can find them…

Search the EDZ for tapes Drifter left you. One tape can be found near computer consoles in each of the following patrol areas and Lost Sectors: Trosland, Skydock IV, Flooded Chasm, Soujourner’s Camp, Excavation Site XII, Winding Cove, and Scavenger’s Den.

Check out our Hidden Messages locations guide for a thorough walkthrough of where to find each tape.

We’re In This Together

After hearing everything Drifter has to say, you feel compelled to visit him.

  • Visit Drifter in the Annex of the Tower.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Drifter Crew Loyalty Package

Crew Loyalty Package

The Drifter slips you a package on the sly, giving you a nod of acknowledgement. He’s grateful that you have his back.

Destiny 2 Decision Point Allegiance Vanguard

Stand with the Vanguard – The Investigation

Choosing to stand with the Vanguard will begin The Investigation quest.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Vanguard The Investigation

Signed, Sealed Delivered

You’ve chosen to steer clear of the Drifter. You should probably tell your new friend Aunor…

  • Find a terminal in the Tower Hangar where you can compose an encrypted message.

Go to the hangar and turn right. Walk past Cayde-6’s old hangout spot and look for a little side area with a computer. This is the terminal that will be used a few times during this Allegiance quest.

A Message of Solidarity

Aunor is one of the Hidden, a coveted group of Guardians who gather sensitive intelligence. You’ve heard rumors that they’re embedded on just about every active Vanguard front, including the Tower. With your message in hand, you begin to look around, hoping to find one of them. Maybe they can get your message to Aunor.

  • Find the Hidden agent in the Tower Hangar to drop off your message.

The hidden agent is a human standing around in the hangar.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Vanguard Wiretapping the Annex plant bugs

Wiretapping the Annex

Aunor wants you to bug Drifter’s new haunt in the Annex. She believes that eavesdropping on Drifter remotely will yield valuable intel on his next move.

  • Find suitable locations in the Annex to plant audio surveillance devices. Plant 3 bugs.

The three bugs can be planted in the room where Drifter stands. It appears as if all three can be planted in the same spot. However, there is a spot to the left and right of the Mote bank where the bugs can be placed.

Surveillance

“That’s one to check off our bucket list,” Ghost remarks dryly. “Let’s see if the feed’s working.”

Return to the Tower Hangar terminal you used to author a message to Aunor. Activate the terminal to monitor the bugs you just planted.

Sting Operation

You picked up a lead while you were spying on the Drifter’s conversations. He’s sending someone to pick up an important shipment from Spider. Maybe you can get there first…

  • Visit the Spider in the Tangled Shore.

A Reasonable Price

Spider is willing to stop trading with the Drifter… for the right price. He’s asking for quite a lot of Glimmer. You’re not happy about the arrangement, nor do you trust Spider, but after a quick consultation with Ghost, you both agree it’s likely worth it. Spider does keep his word, after all.

  • Pay off Spider. Buy the Spider’s Word bribe for 50,000 Glimmer.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Vanguard Looking for a Lead Siren Song

Looking for a Lead

Spider told you Drifter might be planning something on Titan. Anor agrees. It’s worth taking a look around. Without any sense of where to start, you set a course for the Riger.

  • Complete Heroic reprise of adventure “Siren Song” on Titan.

Prime Research

Keep spying on the Drifter for Aunor by playing his games. Drifter knows your true motivations, but he also needs Motes.

  • Bank 50 Motes while playing Gambit or Gambit Prime.

Lifeguard Duty

Aunor says that the Drifter has been flooding the Crucible with his followers. She’s worried that Drifter’s fake-Dredgens will collide with genuine Dredgens, and someone might get legitimately killed. But your reputation precedes you. If you’re there as a lifeguard, people will likely behave.

  • Defeat 25 Guardians in the Crucible.

Field Maintenance

Ghost tells you that the bugs planted around the Drifter’s shop in the Annex have flagged a possible lead to investigate, but they’ll require on-site decryption.

  • Return to the terminal in the Hangar to audit your logs.

Bomb Threat

You’ve extracted a number of keywords from your surveillance transcript that suggest, perhaps, the Drifter has planted explosives somewhere – but the Drifter’s Gambit takes place throughout the solar system. They could be anywhere. You resolve to head up to the Derelict to begin your investigation. Maybe there’s a clue there somewhere.

  • Enter the Activity “Mystery and Potential” via the Gambit Director and search the Derelict for some kind of clue.

After loading into the Derelict, turn right and follow the path along to a shipping container. Inside the container is a terminal on the desk.

The Survival Guide

After investigating the Drifter’s Haul, you discovered he has hidden message around the EDZ for his protégé. One of those tapes could contain the final pieces of evidence that you and Aunor need to prove for once and for all that the Drifter is up to no good.

Search the EDZ for Drifter’s tapes. One tape can be found near computer console in each of the following patrol areas and Lost Sectors: Trostland, Skydock IV, Flooded Chasm, Soujourner’s Camp, Excavation Site XII, Winding Cove, and Scavenger’s Den.

Check out our Survival Guide tape locations guide for a thorough walkthrough of where to find each tape.

Hard Truths

You are a Guardian of the Last City. You live by your principles: loyalty, honor, justice. It chafes at you that you’ve heard messages the Drifter intended for someone else. You send him a message to let him know – and further, that you intend to visit him in person.

  • Visit Drifter in the Annex of the Tower.

Destiny 2 Allegiance Vanguard Praxic Loyalty Package

Praxic Loyalty Package

With a knowing look, Ikora hands you a package. “Aunor asked me to give this to you,” she says, smiling.

  • After speaking with the Drifter, go and speak to Ikora to receive the Praxic Loyalty Package.

Completing the Decision Point quest in Destiny 2 will likely leave you looking for more answers. For those that sided with the Vanguard, some more lore gives insight into the Drifter and Vanguard, and those that sided with Drifter have a new ally. This likely isn’t the end of the Allegiance quest, so we’ll keep you updated if more steps become available. For now, check out the Destiny 2 complete strategy guide for more thorough quest walkthroughs.
