How To Troubleshoot Or Turn Off The Discord Call Sound

Last Updated: September 13, 2020

The incoming call notification sound in Discord is either really useful or really annoying. Depending on which side of the fence you sit, you may want to turn off the Discord call sound altogether. If you like using it, you will likely come across times when it either sounds all the time even if there isn’t an incoming message or otherwise not work as advertised. This tutorial walks you through both scenarios.

Gaming

The incoming call notification is useful if you’re in game or busy doing something and not worried about being disturbed. If you’re in the middle of something or are concentrating hard then disabling this notification can reduce distractions significantly. Like most things in Discord, it’s very easy to do once you know how.

Troubleshooting the call sound takes a little more work and I’ll tackle that in a minute.

Turn off Discord call sound

Turning off notifications in Discord is super-useful if you want to keep interacting with the app but want to reduce interruptions from calls. It’s a simple setting that toggles the incoming ring on or off. You can use it situationally or permanently, it is entirely up to you.

  1. Open Discord on your device.
  2. Select User Settings from the gear icon at the bottom.
  3. Select Notifications from the left menu.
  4. Scroll to Incoming Ring and toggle it off.

Turn off Discord call sound using mobile

  1. Open Discord on your mobile.
  2. Select the user image at the bottom.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Choose “Tweak notification settings” in the pop-up window.
  5. Scroll down to select “call”.
  6. Tap the show notification to disable. Ensure it’s grayed out.

That’s it. Now you should no longer be interrupted by the Discord call sound. When you’re ready to dive back into Discord or into chat, you can enable it again so you’re notified when someone wants to chat.

Troubleshooting the Discord call sound

I have heard of a few people having issues around the Discord call sound. Issues such as ringing permanently, even when nobody is calling or when it won’t ring even when the Incoming Ring setting is enabled. There are likely other situations too. Here are a few troubleshooting methods for correcting the Discord call sound.

Restart Discord

It could just be Discord misfiring so a quick restart should be able to let you know if that’s the case or not. Shut down Discord, make sure the process has stopped in your task or activity manager and then restart it again. This should fix it at least some of the time.

In Windows:

  1. Right click an empty space on the Windows Task Bar and select Task Manager.
  2. Select the Discord process, right click and select End Task.
  3. Restart Discord.

This should work fine and the ringing should stop when you restart Discord. This isn’t the only way to stop it ringing permanently though. If you select the Discord process and expand it, you will see the main process and some dependent processes underneath. You can select one of those dependent processes to see if it’s one of those causing the malfunction rather than shutting Discord down completely.

If you use a Mac, use the Command key + Q or use Activity Monitor to shut down Discord in the same was as in Windows.

In the vast majority of cases this is enough to stop Discord ringing permanently. If yours continues to ring, you have two main options. Reinstall Discord or update your audio driver. If all other games and applications work fine with your current audio driver, start with Discord. If you’re having other problems with audio, start with your driver.

In Windows:

  1. Select the Windows Start button.
  2. Scroll to Discord and right click the icon.
  3. Select Uninstall from the menu.
  4. Select to uninstall Discord from the popup window.
  5. Download a fresh copy of Discord from the website.
  6. Install it and log in.

If you made any customizations, you will need to do them over. Otherwise you should see your servers and channels appear, your original avatar and everything else the same as it was before you uninstalled. It is a little drastic but a few web users have had to resort to reinstalling Discord just to stop that call sound.

Update your audio driver in Windows:

  1. Identify the make and model of sound card if you use one or motherboard if you use onboard sound.
  2. Visit the manufacturer’s website for your device and find the Download section.
  3. Download the latest audio driver for your device.
  4. Right click the Windows Start button and select Device Manager.
  5. Select your sound card and right click.
  6. Select Sound, video and game controllers.
  7. Select your sound device and select Update Driver.
  8. Select to manually install a driver and point Windows to the download.
  9. Install and reboot your computer.

That should definitely stop the Discord call sound!

discord static sound

Discord is the most popular voice call program for gamers. It comes packed with all kinds of features. Not only does it allow you to be able to talk to your friends, but you can also create a variety of text channels.

These text channels can act as a general chat, or a guide for a game, or anything at all! What’s even better is that you can create countless servers in Discord and modify them to your heart’s content. It does not matter whether you want a private server, or a server for a particular game, as Discord has got you covered!

Static Sound Coming from Discord

Users in Discord have been experiencing a weird static sound coming from the voice channels. For some users, the sound is unbearably loud, and for some, it’s barely noticeable. In either case, the static sound has worried and frustrated a number of users.

Most of them are even mentioning how the issue is only limited to Discord. Simply put, they aren’t experiencing any static sound from games or other media. This rule out the possibility of a broken headset. This also leads us to believe that the issue is most likely with Discord or some other audio program.

Why Are You Hearing Static Sound?

Until you have further studied your issue, we can’t really say what’s the cause behind it. Different users have applied different methods in order to fix the issue. This also means that you could be facing an entirely different issue than theirs.

Whatever the reason is, what you will need to do is to apply some troubleshooting steps. This will help you eliminate each possible reason for your issue. So, in order to get to the root of this issue, try following these steps:

What Are the Possible Reasons for Static Sound?

1. Checking Your Default Output in Discord

One of the first and simplest things you can do is to manually check the output you have set in Discord. You can do this by going to your Discord’s settings. Under Voice & Video tab, check if you have the right output device set.

If you don’t have much idea about this, we suggest you try selecting each one of the output devices. Also, try disabling the Noise Suppression option in Discord. If none of the options work, move on to the next step.

2. Check Sound Panel Options in Windows

Another thing to check is your sound panel settings in Windows. Start by searching for your audio settings in Windows. Once the window appears, you should be able to see an option labeled “Sound panel options” on the right.

Click on it to have another window appear on your screen. Now, try selecting all recording devices in the list. Sometimes, you may have the wrong recording device selected. This is why we suggest you change and try each one of them.

3. Try Another Headset

Even if the issue is only with your Discord, we still can’t rule out the possibility of a faulty headset. What we suggest you do here is to simply try another headset. You can use any working headset or even earphones.

The goal here is to check whether this fixes your issue or not. If it does, you may want to upgrade your headset.

4. Use Discord Through Browser

Most of the users facing this issue have stated that using Discord in browser mode has helped them fix the issue. More specifically, all of them have used Mozilla Firefox to open Discord.

We recommend you do the same and try using Discord through Firefox. If the issue is fixed, then this means that something may be wrong with your Discord application or there is a 3rd party app causing this issue. Just in case, check all audio-related programs installed on your computer.

5. Fixing Through PulseAudio

PulseAudio is a program that you may need to install in order to fix this issue. Once you install the program, you will simply need to modify the module labeled “/etc/pulse/default.pa”. Find the following module:

Load-module module-udev-detect

And replace it with:

Load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0

Now, restart PulseAudio through the following command:

Pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload

Conclusion

These are all the 5 different possibilities and what you can do in order to fix static sound in Discord.

Ringing discord keeps

The very annoying "beeping" sound on Discord is a messaging sound. It can drive you crazy as it's relentless. Here's how to quickly and easily turn it off, in two steps.

The first is to limit direct messages (DM) beeping at you:

  1. Click on the little gear icon in user settings (lower left of the screen) ⚙️
  2. Click on Notifications on the left menu
  3. Scroll down and turn "Message" off turn-off-message-noise-discord.png

Next is to limit server notifications, this can be unique for each Discord server you're a member of.

For example, some Discord servers use the @everyone notification far more than others. When you receive an "@everyone" notification in a server, it will alert you like a DM alert. This can happen from various channels on the Discord server. If you're a member of multiple servers this can get a little crazy.

If this is the case, you need to edit the notifications, or mute the notifications for each Discord server.

To mute a specific Discord server that is overusing the "@everyone" notice, or simply edit the settings to your liking, set the following areas up for each server you are a member of: discord-silence-direct-messages-ttd.png

Right click on the Discord server icon and click on "Notification Settings", from here you can decide how you're notified:

  1. Only receive mentions when someone uses @mention
  2. Do not get any messages
  3. Stop anyone sending you @mention (including admins etc.)
  4. All roles (admins) cannot send you @mention

Done. Enjoy a quieter Discord experience.

Please note, when joining a new server, you will need to set your own preferences for the new server.
