Skip the line: California drivers can now do more at DMV self-service kiosks

If you are reading in the ABC10 app, click here for multimedia.

For many people, nothing can ruin a day quite like standing in line at the DMV.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles knows how frustrating waiting for your number to be called can be — so they introduced self-service kiosks. At the kiosk drivers can instantly get their vehicle registration and license plate stickers without having to stand in line for hours at a time.

In 2019, the DMV is making customer visits even more convenient, by adding more services to the kiosks. With just a few taps, California drivers can now:

  • Pay vehicle registration suspension reinstatement fee ($14)
  • Submit or remove an affidavit of non-use
  • Submit insurance information when required by the Vehicle Insurance Program.

Previously, those services could only be completed online, by mail or over the phone.

"We are always looking for convenient ways to provide our service to the people of California, and this is another step in that direction," said Acting DMV Director Bill Davidson. "We are excited to see DMV Now Self-Terminals offer these expanded options."

Customers will need to have their license plate number and the last five characters of their vehicle identification number. If the driver cannot find that information, they will need a letter from the DMV with a personal identification number.

Drivers will also need their insurance documents.

Kiosks accept credit/debit cards and cash. Click here to find a Kiosk near you.

Just Don’t Go - Do it Online

Did you know the California DMV offers certain services online? You can:

  • Apply for a first-time drivers license.
  • Apply for an AB60 license.
  • Renew an expired drivers license or identification card.
  • Replace a lost or stolen drivers license or identification card.
  • Change your address on your drivers license or identification card.
  • Much much more.

Just schedule an appointment on the DMV website. The DMV will email or text you notification of your appointment time. Go to work, attend a class, run errands, or watch a movie until your approved appointment time.

Avoid the Rush

When you need to go to the DMV in-person or you have a complicated transaction, your best option is to avoid the below times and days:

  • Avoid Mondays and Fridays. In general, Mondays and Fridays tend to be busier than other days.
  • Avoid lunchtime. A lot of optimistic folks brave the DPS at lunch thinking they’ll get through the line quickly. They usually don’t.
  • Avoid the day before or after a holiday. The DPS isn’t open on holidays. All those customers not getting serviced spill over to other days.

New Automated DMV Kiosks Providing Relief For Bay Area Drivers

Yurka suddenly took a step forward and buried his nose in the captain's chest. The experienced sea wolf in response hugged the boy so gently and carefully, as if he were crystal. And then, quite unexpectedly, Yurka clung to the captain and began to cry.

He cried the way those who almost never cry do: without sobbing, but with some dry sounds, similar to the barking of a hoarse.
