P0420 nissan altima 2011 DEFAULT

This page is meant to help you troubleshoot the Nissan Altima P trouble code. It covers Nissan Altima P meaning, symptoms, causes, and possible solutions. WIth the Altima, OBDII P is often caused by a bad oxygen sensor, but there can be other causes as well. Jumping straight to replacing the O2 sensor can cost you time and money.

Nissan Altima P Diagnosis

P is a very common trouble code. This code number references a number that is given to you when you plug your Nissan Altima into a OBDII scanner. It doesn&#;t matter which model you have, this OBDII code has the same meaning for all of them (+)

Nissan Altima P OBDII Code Defined

Altima P Code Symptoms

P is a OBDII trouble code. The code technically stands for:

Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold

Your Altima has at least two oxygen sensors, one before and after the catalytic converter. Among the many jobs that oxygen sensors have is they have to measure the emissions levels coming in and out of the converter.

When the readings from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors show similar readings, the vehicle will throw the service engine soon light (P).

These readings shouldn’t match, since the catalytic converter is supposed to be scrubbing the exhaust. When the numbers match, the software in your Altima believes that the catalytic converter is no longer doing its job.

Nissan Altima P Code Symptoms

P Nissan Altima

The P code in a Nissan Altima will often be thrown one of your oxygen sensors are not functioning properly. Typically, the code will be triggered by the upstream oxygen sensor (before the converter).

There aren&#;t usually any drivability issues associated with P For most people the first sign that anything is wrong at all is the service engine soon light coming on.

Here are the typical symptoms that something is wrong when you have code P

  • Fuel Efficiency- May or may not suffer depending on how much the catalytic converter is clogged.
  • Loss of Power&#; It is a really strange feeling to drive a vehicle with a catalytic converter that is going out. Typically, they&#;ll idle ok and drive normal under a light load. Whenever the engine is put under a heavy load it&#;ll feel like it is running out of gas. It&#;s very similar to the symptoms of a bad fuel filter.
  • Service Engine Light&#; Often, this is the only symptom of the Nissan Altima P code.

Top Causes of P in the Nissan Altima

There are many things that can cause the P trouble code in your Altima. Here are the most common ones.

  • Oxygen Sensor&#; The P codes is thrown when the oxygen sensors on both sides of the exhaust have very similar readings. When the oxygen sensor is bad, it can cause a false reading and trigger the code. If the engine does not exhibit any of the decreased performance associated with a bad catalytic converter, it very well may be the oxygen sensor (if you haven&#;t noticed the performance loss yet).
  • Catalytic Converter&#; A catalytic converter is responsible for scrubbing out as much pollution as possible from the Altima’s exhaust. Over time, they can become clogged. Although, modern catalytic converters are supposed to last the life of most vehicles, it could be there is some underlying problem if it has clogged.
  • O2 Sensor Wiring&#; Over time, the oxygen sensor wiring can go bad. It is especially volatile since it is right next to the hot exhaust at all times. The downstream oxygen sensor wiring is also volatile since it is so far from the ECM (more distance to travel = more area to fail).
  • Altima Timing&#; If your Altima is misfiring or the exhaust timing is off, this can affect the gasses that are actually going to the O2 sensors enough to cause the P code to register.
  • ExhaustLeak&#; If there&#;s a noticeable exhaust leak coming from the vehicle it can change what the O2 sensors register enough to throw the P code.
  • Engine Temp Sensor&#; If the computer doesn&#;t know what the engine temp is it&#;ll keep the fuel mixture rich. When the fuel mixture is rich, the exhaust the O2 sensors see will be out of range and it could throw the sensor.

Nissan Altima P Code Possible Solutions

Often, the oxygen sensor is the cause of P Specifically it&#;ll usually be the O2 sensor(s) on the upstream side of the catalytic converter.

But, don&#;t be surprised if it&#;s not. It would be a good idea to check the exhaust for leaks first. You should be able to hear an exhaust leak easily underneath of the vehicle.

Unless you have an exhaust leak, you&#;ll probably need to test the O2 sensors and/or catalytic converters. Here are a couple of good guides to help with that.

Good luck figuring out what is causing P with your Nissan Altima. If there are any inaccuracies, or anything that you feel could improve the article, please feel free to comment or message. Thank you.

Nissan P

Possible causes

&#; Three way catalyst converter Bank 1
&#; Exhaust tube
&#; Intake air leaks
&#; Fuel injectors may be faulty
&#; Fuel injector leaks
&#; Spark plugs may be faulty
&#; Improper ignition timing
&#; Engine Control Module (ECM)

Notes

As the Nissan Pcode description implies the Nissan Pcode means that the vehicle&#;s control module has detected that the three-way catalytic converter is not working properly (is not as efficient as the factory is expecting). Replacing the oxygen (O2) sensors may sometimes fix the code, but in most cases the catalytic convert needs to be replaced to fix the problem. If the P code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

What is the code mean?

&#; Three way catalytic converter Bank 1 does not operate properly.
&#; Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 does not have enough oxygen storage capacity.

Possible symptoms

&#; Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Nissan P Description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the switching frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 (front O2 sensor) and heated oxygen sensors 2 (rear O2 sensor).

A three way catalyst converter (Manifold) with high oxygen storage capacity will indicate a low switching frequency of heated oxygen sensor 2. As oxygen storage capacity decreases, the heated oxygen sensor 2 switching frequency will increase.

When the frequency ratio of heated oxygen sensors 1 and 2 approaches a specified limit value, the three way catalyst malfunction is diagnosed.

Q: Check Engine Light P trouble code

asked by

EV R

on November 10,

i have nissan altima. About a month ago the CES light came on and was on for about two weeks. I just purchased a new transmission less than 5 months ago so I thought there may be an issue with it. It took it back to the dealership immediately. They ran a diagnostic check on it and informed me that the error code is PO, and that I may be able to get it repaired cheaper at a muffler shop. However, I have not had the income to get it repaired yet. A week later the CES light went off by itself. Now, three weeks later it has come on again. Could something other than the catalytic converter be causing the CES light to come on?

My car has miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there, thanks for writing in. Typically, a P code (catalyst efficiency insufficient) is the catalytic converter not properly functioning. Chances are, the Check Engine Light going off and then back on, it’s still the P code that is present. An exhaust leak(s) and rarely O2 sensor faults, can also cause this code to set. To avoid any unnecessary repairs, I recommend having your vehicle’s P trouble code be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

What others are asking

Car shuts off while driving

Hello. This comes up often on your vehicle. The most common cause of your car suddenly shutting off is a bad main relay. This can also be caused by a failing sensor or distributor, but that is not as common

Occasionally will not start

I am assuming when you say it won't start in this case, the motor will not turn. It's an important distinction to make. Is it a "Crank no start", or is it a "No crank". With the crank no start,

My seat won’t recline forward Nissan altima

If you have a non-powered seat, the cause could be mechanical in nature and involve levers and/or the seat track. If you have a powered seat, depending on exactly what you mean by "recline" the problem could be electrical and/or

Does my catalytic converter need to be replaced or not?

A code P may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for A damaged or failed oxygen sensor (HO2S) Downstream oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring damaged or connected improperly The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / muffler / exhaust pipe Retarded spark timing The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings Leaking fuel injector or high fuel pressure Cylinder misfire Oil contamination So bad fuel can also cause this code, I would run a can of seafoam in the fuel to get things cleaned up, then on you next fill up use Chevron or Texaco, that fuel contains Techron and it will help to keep your fuel system and injectors clean, if you can't get Techron fuel then you can buy some at your local parts store. So that should take care of the bad fuel issue, and hopefully it didn't damage the catalyst, I would not be too concerned at this point as the light went out on it's own that means that the problem has not reoccurred in at least 20 restarts. Nissan P &#; Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, &#; Fixes

Nissan Code P Definition

Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (Bank 1).

What Does P Mean For Your Nissan?

The function of the catalytic converter is to break down harmful pollutants that are created by your Nissan during the combustion cycle and convert them into harmless gases. Code P indicates that the catalytic converter is not functioning efficiently, therefore increasing the output of harmful pollutants by your Nissan.

Nissan P Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Lack of power from the engine
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Rotten egg or sulfur smell

Nissan P Causes

  • Faulty oxygen sensor
  • Worn and internally failing catalytic converter
  • Leak in exhaust system

Nissan Code P Severity &#; Moderate

While P does not pose a danger to the driver and may not produce any symptoms with issues related to drivability, it can cause severe damage to other components of your Nissan if not addressed in a timely manner. It is recommended that you address P as soon as possible to keep the cost of the repair to a minimum.

Nissan Code P Common Diagnosis Mistakes

Do not overlook other codes that are paired along with P Nissan codes P, P, P, P, P, P, P, P, P, P, and P can give false data readings that create conditions which trigger code P If any other codes are present, they should be addressed first.

Nissan P Diagnosis

Tools Needed to Diagnose:
  1. Scan your Nissan to verify P is the only code present. If other codes are present, they must be addressed first.
  2. Examine the exhaust system for damage and leaks. Pay close attention to the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and exhaust pipes pre-catalytic converter. If any leaks are found, repair the leak, clear the code, and complete several drive cycles to verify that was the fix.
  3. With the Nissan running and at normal operating temperature, use the digital multimeter to check the voltage reading of the downstream O2 sensor. The downstream O2 sensor produces a relatively steady voltage reading of approximately V if the catalytic converter is functioning properly. If the voltage of the downstream O2 sensor is constantly jumping between V and V, the catalyst is worn and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.
