After three years of support, the Pixel 2 has received its last update from Google: a delayed November security patch going out to the devices this month, as noted by Android Central. Google’s device support schedule indicates that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL aren’t guaranteed security updates after October

Google announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in October The two devices were identical in every way except size, and they earned plenty of praise for their somewhat groundbreaking camera. Google was early to really lean into camera software and computational photography, and the results showed in the Pixel 2 — its single rear-facing camera was in many ways ahead of the multi-camera-toting competition.

Aside from a highly capable camera and an overall likable design, it wasn’t without its troubles. The Pixel 2 XL’s screen suffered some well-documented woes, including a tendency toward a blue color cast when viewed at slightly off angles. Shortcomings aside, the 2 and 2 XL will be best remembered as the smartphones that put truly incredible image processing capabilities into your pocket.

Nevertheless, time marches on, and current Pixel devices will see a December security patch arriving this week. The Pixel 3 and newer will also be receiving new features borrowed from recent devices, like adaptive sound and Extreme Battery Saver mode.

[Update: OTA now available] Google rolling out the final Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL update

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL officially reached end of life status in October after three years of updates. Google promised one last release, but it did not come yesterday alongside the Pixel Feature Drop. The final Pixel 2 update is now rolling out.

Update 12/14: The Pixel 2&#;s December OTA is now available from the &#;Check for updates&#; screen. This &#;final software update&#; — as reiterated by Google — comes in at just MB (for the 2 XL).

After installing, &#;Check for update&#; will look exactly the same as before and still note an October 5 security update. However, you can confirm the RP1A.A1 build number from the bottom of Settings > About phone.

Update 12/ Google confirmed to us today that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL&#;s final release is rolling out as an over-the-air update in a process that will continue into next week. It comes as the majority of users have yet to encounter the OTA two days after the factory images were released, and as the update button is not available to tap.

Original 12/8: Similar to the first Pixel phone, the Pixel 2 skipped a November update, but is now getting the previous month&#;s patches, along with those introduced in December, as part of one final release. Only the factory images for manual installation &#; you can also check our guide here&#; are available right now. The OTA has not yet reached devices.

Settings > System > Advanced > System update still says that &#;Regular updates have ended for this device,&#; but that should change to the normal &#;Check for update&#; button once the rollout is underway.

The last build is RP1AA1 for both devices, and there&#;s only one version for all carriers:

It&#;s an important fix in that it continues to address Android 11 issues from the original launch in September. For example, Google in October addressed:

  • Fix for some devices stuck during boot
  • Fix to prevent inadvertent disablement of call notifications
  • Fix for missing auto-rotate icon in certain device orientations
  • Fix for undetected overview swipe gestures in launcher

That said, the Pixel 2 is not getting any December Pixel Feature Drop functionality. Those new features are limited to the Pixel 3 and later.

Google Pixel 2 updates will end in December as the phone rides into the sunset

TL;DR

  • In December, Google will issue the last of the Google Pixel 2 updates.
  • After that update, the phone will no longer receive security patches or new Android versions.
  • The Pixel 2 will still work without updates, but it won’t be as secure.

Technically, this means that the Pixel 2 will receive more updates than Google originally promised. Google only commits to three years of software updates for its Pixel phones, and the Pixel 2 launched in October However, Google will deliver one final update in December for both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL before laying them to rest.

The company did something similar with the original Google Pixel, which also stopped receiving updates in December last year.

No more Google Pixel 2 updates

To be clear, people who own a Pixel 2 will still be able to use their phones after the final December update. They will just have to do so knowing that they won’t receive any future security patches or new Android versions. This puts them in danger as their Pixel 2 will be less secure than other actively supported phones.

If you have no interest in custom ROMs and don’t feel comfortable using a device without updates, you’ll need to upgrade. The brand new Google Pixel 5 appears to be a solid option, or you could save some cash and grab the Pixel 4a or Pixel 4a 5G.

We are certain that a lot of our readers will be upset by this news. Although they likely knew it was coming, the Pixel 2 is one of Android Authority readers’ favorite devices from the past few years. Pour one out, friends.
