The size and weight of the Rumble 40 make it ideal for home use. It won’t take up your entire living room, and will comfortably project noise without shattering windows or waking neighbors.

At the same time, it’s that size and weight that probably makes it a good bet for those playing bars or small clubs. They need some power behind their sound but don’t need to reach people half a mile away. It also won’t take up much of the precious onstage real estate of the smaller gig stages of such venues. Your drummer will be delighted.

Does it do what it should?

Out of the box, the Rumble 40 smells vaguely like a new car. That can be chalked up to the black vinyl covering. Did you know you can use the same spray for cleaning inside your car for cleaning your amp?

Typical of the vast majority of amps, it comes with plastic volume knob on a metal control plate. There’s nothing wrong with that, but – and this is purely personal – I think these particular knobs look ugly. And cheap. But it’s a budget amp, so I guess that’s OK. I’m going to put that thought aside though – amps are for listening to.

It’s a classic looking amp. The black vinyl is clean, and it comes with chrome corner plates holding it all together, matched with a silver Fender logo in its top front left corner.

I spy a few other elements that are nice to see. It sounds like a basic feature, but you’d be surprised how many amp come without a headphone jack! It reinforces its status as an amp appropriate for home use. Additionally, it has an XLR line out – perfect for live situations or recording.

So far so good. It’s got everything you need. But how do all these parts hold together?

Fender Rumble Construction

As you’d expect from a brand like Fender, they take the build quality of their instruments pretty seriously. With the price of the Rumble 40, you can tell it’s not going to be US made. Quite frankly, if you were basing things on looks alone, you wouldn’t know any better.

Plenty of brands – Vox, Laney – are making their amps in the east and charging plenty more for them!

When an amp is aimed at gigging musicians, construction quality is even more important. It’s got to be able to take being taken from a house or practice room to a car or van, to a venue, probably getting moved multiple times in the venue, then back to a car or van, and finally back to a house or practice room.

That’s a lot of getting moved around that it needs to be able to take! If it isn’t well constructed, it will fall apart. Obviously, I don’t have the capacity to do that in the context of this review. What I can say, is that everything looks like it’s held in place as solidly as it could and should be. Lifting it by the handle and giving it a gentle jerk, it seems like it’d be fine for more than a few shows.

Fender Rumble Tones

Yay! Time to make some noise! I’m a very straightforward person when it comes to the sound of my musical instrument, and I like to keep it simple. I know what I like. At the same time, I’m intrigued by the various options available on the Rumble 40.

Apart from the standard stuff like master volume and EQ settings, a couple of things on the Rumble have caught my eye that I’m keen to play with.

Foremost of these is the overdrive circuit. I’m a devil for an overdriven bass. Ordinarily, I’d assume the use of a pedal for such matters – I feel like it’s not a common feature on bass amps. I also favor super-fuzzy bass sounds, so let’s see how far I can take this.

I’m used to guitar amps having separate clean and overdrive channels, but in the case of the Rumble 40, it’s not so much a separate channel, more of a circuit that you either engage or disengage. You can use a button on the amp’s control panel, or a footswitch. The footswitch isn’t included. Fender’s single-button switch should do the job, and you can pick one up for less than $15.

Pushing the switch, I liked the overdrive of the Rumble 40, but I can’t say that I loved it. Compared to a proper bass fuzz pedal… it’s hard to explain, but it just wasn’t it. I don’t feel like it was as fat as my favored fuzz bass would be. It’s a good place to start exploring the overdriven bass sound, but let it be known that you can go further.

Of the three voicing settings, vintage was definitely my favorite. It claims a tube emulation, which in the context of things I’ll let them off with, but it’s hardly running it through a Reddi. The bright setting, as the name suggests, boosts the high end of the tone. I’ve never been into that. The contour setting scoops out your mids. Again, I’m not a fan. I like a full, fat bass sound.

Fender Rumble Series Playability

In that last section, I may have not been happy with all the options at my disposal on the Rumble 40. But I feel like that goes back to the fact that I know what I like – I’ve been doing this a while!

But this amp isn’t really aimed at me. The cost of this amp is what makes it ideal for those who haven’t been playing bass quite so long, and it’s the in-bult options that will help them listen to different tones, and figure out their own sound.

Fender Rumble Alternatives

I’m a big fan of Laney amps, and their RB2 is very much in the same ballpark as the Rumble 40. It clocks in at 30 watts compared to the Rumble’s 40, but shares the speaker size of 10 inches.

The RB2 is more of your standard bass amp. No fancy voicing or overdrive, just your EQ setting to shape your tone. It has two inputs, normal and high, better suited to different pickup outputs. Need a little extra kick? It’s got a compressor built in at the push of a button. Speaking of kick, it has an angled back for a “kickback” design. This is better for venues where you can’t raise the amp, so you can angle its sound towards your head.

Probably the most respected bass amp brand ever is Ampeg. If you like the idea of having that iconic brand in your backline, then you might want to take a look at their BA-110. Its specs seem like a combination of both the Rumble and the RB2: it has a 40-watt output, 10-inch speaker, and simple EQ.

Probably the most outstanding feature of the BA-110is its rugged design. Honestly, I think it might be bulletproof. It’s got a steel chassis and impact resistant metal corners. What’s funny is that Ampeg describes it on their website as lightweight and portable… but it clocks in at 34 lbs. That’s double the weight of the Rumble 40!

1) Learn the fundamentals of music theory and the rules of writing songs.
2) Practice. Remember that the first few hundred songs you write won’t be “the best” songs ever, but that’s why you need to keep working on it.

The Athlone Academy of Music (AAM) is a non-profit organisation established in 1994 with the sole aim of providing music tuition within the Athlone area. This initiative has now expanded and has grown to include the greater Athlone community residing along the Klipfontein corridor including Langa, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Retreat, Steenberg, Atlantis and Malmesbury to name but a few. The communities in and around Athlone have tried but there has not always been a cohesive attempt to make sure that music education is not lost to our children. Music tuition has shown to help with discipline, motivation and a sense of belonging. Three basic values that children from the poorer disadvantaged communities need plenty of. We all know that these communities suffer under the scourge of substance abuse, disease, abuse against women and children and a general decay of the social fibre in society. This social decay is largely a result of unemployment, poverty and idleness. We at the Academy feel obliged to create opportunities for children in the communities we serve to be active in music education and in so doing, eradicate some of the social pathologies we are faced with on a daily basis.

SoundHouse is a music educational vision. Designed not only to educate microcosmically but to facilitate the teaching of musical concepts through music technology. A particular focus of this vision is on music experimentation, composition, learning and recording, digital media, such as picture stories, music videos and digital mash-ups.

In De Kuilen street Kuilsriver, the average passer-by may be pleasantly surprised by what is heard when passing number 15. This building houses a premier music school within the community: Cape Music Institute. The sounds of guitar, bass-guitar, drums, keyboards, saxophones, and voices fill the air, making it an educational, entertaining and fun atmosphere. The concept of Cape Music Institute was birthed during a meeting in 2005 between Camillo Lombard, Ezra Delport, and Gary Thomas and, is currently in its fourth year of existence. CCFM (Cape Community FM) is a 24-hour, non-profit, community radio station serving the people of Cape Town. We play a mix of contemporary Christian music, combined with compelling chat, views and interviews. Not to mention up-to-the-minute news, weather and traffic information. CCFM was the first community radio station and has been on the airwaves for over 18 years, starting as Radio Fish Hoek in 1993. We currently broadcast from our building in Muizenberg on 107.5 FM in the Greater Cape Town and on 96.7 FM in the Fish Hoek valley.

NueLight Productions is the brainchild and passion of Julita Kok. NueLight produces superb musical showcases bringing the very best of South African talent to the fore. The Mercury is a top class music venue in Cape Town, right up the road from the Cape Technikon and close to the city itself. Incorporating two venues playing a large mix of music, it is one of the best places in Cape Town to hear South African tunes.

This venue is actually two in one: the Live and the Lounge areas. With its own in-house sound and lighting system, the Mercury has built a superb reputation and a loyal clientele during its 10-year existence.

A high energy electronicore band focused on bombastic theatrical performances, Set For The Sky have been making waves all across the local scene with electric live performances and a high quality sound. Lance has what people in the drumming community call Gospel Chops. This is a combination of intense technical playing and drum patterns which have big funk and hip hop swinging grooves. He is currently one of the top Gospel Chops drummers in Cape Town and is already counted as one of the top drummers in South Africa.He runs his own music school where he works with and teaches young children to play music.

He’s been teaching around Cape Town and its surrounds. Lance studied at Cape Music Institute where he played in the Camillo Lombard Trio and Donveno Prins Band for 2 years. Since then, Lance has been a session musician and has worked with top artists like Camillo Lombard, Donveno Prins, Loyiso Bala, Allou April, Joyous Celebration, Ernie Smith, Sammy Webber, and One Accord.He has two drumming instructional DVDs: “Playing over the Groove” and “Beyond Playing”.

Talented singer/songwriter Louise Day has been captivating audiences and stealing hearts since a young age. A true Cape Town girl through and through, her unique blend of Folk/Pop, delivered by her outstanding lingering vocals, have been showcased at some of the trendiest and musically influential venues in South Africa.

Her music career started professionally when an itch to explore the international music scene lead her to the United States where she settled for a year in Colorado. There she began performing at a premiere live music venue, “Bellyup” (www.bellyupaspen.com), regularly opening for visiting internationally recognized artists, including the likes of the acclaimed ‘Grace Potter & The Nocturnals’ and ‘The English Beat’. q

This exposure resulted in a tremendous demand for her talents, and her remaining time was spent performing as a Fender Musician at the Winter X Games and Tempe Music Festival in Arizona, performing on the same stage as many international artists such as John Mayer and The Fray. She also made her mark on Fender USA when she was approached to endorse their new range of guitars for women. Since her return to South Africa, Louise and her band launched their very successful debut album “Chasing the Wind “ followed by a second album “Swallowed by the City” which was produced by music legend Theo Crous of the Springbok Nude Girls.

The album went on to receive a SAMA (South African Music Awards) nomination for best Pop Album. After a busy time of live performances, Louise and her band are back in the studio working on their third album which will be released in 2014.

After discovering that he loved writing songs in high school and taking some guitar lessons, Jesse could sense that he was embarking on a journey to follow his dreams.

Jesse has had a career that many singer-songwriters would love. He has pursued his music with single-minded determination, and it has definitely paid off.

One of his first big miles stones on his journey was winning a national talent competition. After that there was no stopping Jesse! Not only did he get a mjor record deal, but Jesse went on to form the Jesse Jordan Band. The Jesse Jordan Band consisted of Alex Power on keys, Heindrich Schultz on guitar, JP Crouch on drums and Sheree Power on Rhythm guitar.

So far Jesse has managed to record four albums, but that’s just a start! He’s still in the prime of his career, and it would seem as though nothing is slowing him down.

Over the years he has played countless live shows; ranging from music festivals and parties to selling out venues. He has honed his skill as a performer and audiences always leave with a smile on their faces. Jesse is known to give 150% to every performance!

After years with the Jesse Jordan Band, Jesse has started a new solo journey. It’s just him, a guitar and his life experiences. He has spent the last two years writing new songs which explore the lessons he’s learned on his journey.

This new solo project is all about story-telling in the style of old-school singer-songwriters and bluesmen. It’s raw, personal and real. In his music, you will find a hint of Michael Buble meets Maroon5, but the sound is still unmistakably Jesse Jordan.

This hip, young virtuoso started playing piano at the age of four!! To his fans this would come as no surprise! Kyle is a well-schooled prodigy… He went on to study piano and voice as subjects, before leaving for Greece, as a youth, where he performed on the Olympia Countess, as it sailed around the globe!! He’s been musical director to many productions, at venues such as the Cape Town International Convention Center and Grand West Casino, amongst many others.

He’s also a producer, session musician, highly trained vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and has had lots of radio airplay. The Kyle Petersen Band features his university trained brother, session star, Darren Petersen, who’s also travelled and performed, much like Kyle.

Reuben is a super drummer, with a history of achievements that read like the biography of a legend in the making! He studied at Beau Soleil’s Music Centre, completing his Trinity Grade 6 drum kit studies, with Distinction! He went on to study at the South African College of Music, at The University of Cape Town.

He performed with the Standard Bank National Schools’ Big Band, in 2007, and at Paul Bothner’s Drum Day, in 2010. He drummed for the North Sea Big Band, in 2010, and followed up by performing at the prestigious Cape Town International Jazz Festival, with Spha Mdlalose. Other notable work includes an appearance on Idols star Unathi’s album, entitled: ‘With Love’, and on Sowers of the Word’s debut album: ‘God of Wonders’. He has a background in Rock, Pop, Swing, Latin jazz, Bebop jazz, R ‘n’ B, Hip Hop and Gospel, in live performance, studio session work and educationally.

He currently performs with the Jimmy Nevis band, electro-pop quartet TheCity and SA ska band Trenton and Free Radicals.

Since most bass rigs tend to be pretty simple affairs, it makes sense that you’d want a simple amp option, too. The options on this list are on par with our best small combo guitar amps post. They’re primarily aimed at practice and some recording work, but aren’t as likely to be able to cut it at a show. That said, I’ve gigged with a 40-watt bass combo with an assist from the house PA, so you may have similar luck. We’ve set the budget here at $300 and a minimum of 40 watts, if possible.

There are many factors at work here, but if you plan to do anything but practice with this amp, go for as many watts as you can afford. There are no hard-and-fast rules; if you’re cutting through the mix with fewer watts, you’re in good shape. A good place to start is three to four times the wattage of your guitarist’s amp, preferably with a larger speaker.

    Much like the counterparts aimed at the guitar crowd, Rumbles are among the most popular bass amps. Just sneaking in under our price cap, the 100 watt version is probably most analogous to the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe in that it’s just enough for gigs and provides a clean palette for your sound.

    Controls include three voicing switches (Contour, Bright, and Vintage), a four-band EQ, Master volume, Drive and Level for the footswitch activated Overdrive circuit, and Gain. The Gain knob controls the input level from your bass and affects the compression on the Vintage voice and interacts with the Drive knob when Overdrive is engaged. In the event that 100 watts won’t help you cut through, this features an XLR out with ground lift so you can run directly to the front of house. There’s also an effects loop for the modern bassist with a pedalboard that rivals the guitarist. The speaker in this one is a 12 inch Eminence Special Design.

    If you need more power, you can buy this in 200 and 500 watt versions, but those exceed our price cap. The 15, 25, and 40 are all considerably cheaper, but are even less likely to do the job in a live setting. One thing to note is that all of the Rumbles include Fender’s Delta-Comp limiter, which means playing louder or harder results in more compression to help prevent mudding out.

    I have plenty of nice things to say about the Crush series from Orange, and talked about my 35RT in our small combo guitar amps post. If you watch this Andertons video on the bass versions, Captain Lee talks about that certain quality that good all-analogue solid state amps have. They’re not in tube territory, but for your practice needs, these can deliver surprisingly solid tones.

    This breaks even between the Peavey and the Fender as there’s no XLR out, but there is an effects loop and a footswitch in for the bi-amp gain circuit. The other controls are Volume, a three-band EQ, Freq, Blend, and Gain. The EQ is active and the treble can be boosted or cut 20 dB, while the Middle and Bass has a range of 15 dB. The Freq knob moves the center frequency of the Middle control. Blend works with the Gain control and controls the ratio of clean to distorted tones and upper harmonics. This comes before the EQ section at the preamp. The Input has a Pad switch for matching to passive or active pickups. To top it off, there’s a built-in tuner, which I have found very handy on my Orange.

    Ampeg is, of course, a monster of the bass amp game. Everyone knows the SVT and the B-15 Portaflex for their many contributions to music. The company continues to offer innovative solutions and great tones for bassists of every kind.

    This offering is pretty squarely aimed at practice settings. At 75 watts, it may be able to gig, but just. With a dedicated AUX Level knob for the AUX input, playing along with recorded tracks is front and center. Other controls include an input pad, Volume, Bass, Mid, and Treble. The overdrive circuit is called Scrambler and features a Drive and Blend knob. Two switches enhance the EQ, with Ultra Hi boosting the 8 kHz frequency by five dB, and Ultra Lo boosting 40 Hz by one dB combined with a 10 dB cut at 500 Hz. The cabinet itself is angled much like a monitor for better projection.

    There are two notable drawbacks to this amp. First, the company compares the Scrambler circuit to the venerable SVT drive. This is a fairly generous comparison and should be taken with a grain of salt. Second, there’s a prominent noise from the internal fan. This probably won’t make much of a difference unless you’re recording, but it’s something to be aware of.

    If you know you’ll only use it for practice, you could go for the BA-110 40 watt version, which is only $179.99.

  4. 4. Peavey Max 100 Bass Combo Amplifier

    • Tilt-back cabinet
    • On-board tuner
    • Hybrid tube boost circuit
    • Only weighs 35 pounds
    • Ten-inch speaker may not move enough air
    • Some complain that the tone is a bit stiff
    • No XLR out
    • Made in China — could be a turn off for some

    As someone who has owned multiple Peavey amps in his life, I can tell you one thing is consistent about them: they’re very loud. For their wattage, for their size, for the price; however you put it, Peaveys can project. I can also attest to their reliability as the two I owned were consistently punished and never wavered.

    This 100 watt amp is $30 less than the Fender above, largely with the trade-off of the I/O options. Controls include Gain with Peavey TransTube boost circuit, three-band EQ with Mid-Shift switch, and Volume with something the company calls “Psycho-Acoustics Technology”. This is a low end enhancement that does’t overdrive the speaker by boosting harmonics and filtering out the majority of the signal below a certain threshold. (You can read more about how that works here.) There’s also a built-in tuner that mutes the amp when on, as well as inputs for Passive and Active pickups.

    The Max Series includes entries at 10, 20, 200, and 300 watts, as well. Only the models at 100 watts and above come with the tilt-back cabinets, though, which could come in handy on some stages.

  5. 5. Hartke HD75 Bass Combo

    • Aluminum-paper 12 inch cone and one-inch tweeter
    • Seven-band EQ
    • Effects loop
    • Parametric bass, mid, and treble controls
    • No XLR output (HD150 has one, however)
    • 48.2 pounds among the heavier in this category
    • Chassis may require tightening to avoid rattling on some units
    • Aluminum in the cone may contribute to a punchier, more mid-range sound

    Hartke is another well-recognized name for bass amps. This 75-watt offering utilizes an aluminum and paper 12 inch cone to provide the expected warmth along with enough punch to cut through a mix. It might not be a sound to everyone’s liking, but the controls on this unit will more than make up for that.

    In addition to Volume and parametric Bass, Mid, and Treble knobs, there’s a seven-band EQ. Each of the bands can be boosted or cut up to 12 dB for very precise tone shaping. You can dial back on some of the midrange that this amp produces while boosting the lows. Otherwise, there’s an AUX in, effects loop, and headphone jack. The input is capable of handling high and low input sources, and there’s a built-in limiter.

    There are 15, 25, and 50 watt versions, while the 150 watt comes in at $379.99 and adds an XLR out.

  6. 6. Bugera Ultrabass MXD12

    • XLR out, tuner out, and effects loop
    • Class D power (claimed 1,000 watts)
    • Wedge-shaped cabinet
    • MOSFET preamp and built-in compressor
    • Almost certainly nowhere near 1,000 watts
    • Pad may be necessary even with passive pickups
    • Legacy Behringer product repackaged
    • Made in China — could be a turn off for some

    It’s possible that you might recognize this amp despite its new livery. As part of the Behringer realignment that sent their pedals to TC Electronic in the form of their new big-box, ultra cheap pedals, Bugera inherited some things from the amp line. That includes this Ultrabass with a Turbosound 12 inch speaker. There are some nifty features in this amp, which uses class D power like the Fender above. Bugera advertise that this is a 1,000 watt amp, but there’s just no way; all that power into one speaker would not sound great, so the reality is probably more like 300. Which is still significant for the money.

    Controls include an input pad, Gain, switchable Comp, three-band EQ with five-way Mid Freq knob, switches for Ultra High and Ultra Low EQ, and a Master volume. There’s an XLR out, effects loop, tuner out, AUX In, and Footswitch in to control the must or loop. This, too, is a tilt-back cabinet for better projection.

    If you can get over the spurious power claims, there are a lot of useful features in this amp. And who knows, maybe it really is that loud?
