View Full Version : Chet Atkins FAME guitar method and guitar

WHen I was about 11 or so, I bought a guitar at a yard sale real cheap. It was an acoustic with a pickup mounted in the soundhole and was marked "FAME" on the headstock. Here is a link to it: FAME acoustic electric guitar 1970s ,very cool - eBay (item 270461302369 end time Oct-02-09 06:38:23 PDT) (http://cgi.ebay.com/FAME-acoustic-electric-guitar-1970s-very-cool_W0QQitemZ270461302369QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuita r?hash=item3ef8bff661). Anyway, I never was able to find out much about it until today. I discovered that it would have been made in the early 1970s in Japan for Chet Atkins FAME guitar instructional method. It was a pretty decent playing guitar and I had it for 20 years before it finally went to pieces (survivor of 2 car wrecks). Does anyone know much about this guitar or about Chet's company? I know his brother was VP of it.

Sorry, Dog, know nothing about it. But it looks nearly EXACTLY like my very first acoustic, without the pots. Man, I wish I still had my first guitar. Action a mile high, but I loved that thing. Shows ya how much I took to the guitar- I had played all kinds of wind instruments in elementary school, but when I got that first guitar, I would play it for hours. My callouses got so thick, I had to shave them with my father's razor- the old fashioned kind that you had to drop into the head that opened up like a clam.

That's a neat looking guitar. I've never seen one with vol and tone knobs in that position on an accoustic. Gonna go for it?

Me go for it? Naw. I have enough crap, and the reserve isn't even met, and who knows what it feels like? I bought a cheap Ovation with action pretty high (not worth bringing it to a tech; needs special wrench for the truss). But I do sometimes play on a steel string acoustic to help clean up my picking, which is very sloppy on an electric.

Nope Dog, not one I know of. An excellent chance they never came to Australia.
The only Fame guitars I am familiar with are made in Poland.

The action wasn't too bad on it and you could adjust the bridge (on mine you could anyway). It had a different sound when played through an amp. The pickup in mine died and I took it out. Mine was pretty well put together and survived 2 car accidents (rear ended with it in the trunk and rolled in another car). The last accident caused a split to occur at a glue joint in the body but that was easily (if not sloppily) fixed. It was downhill after that when the neck joint started coming apart a couple years later.

Apparently, Atkins endorsed a whole system which included what appears to be an amp / video player system for instructors as well as books. Apparently, instructors bought a franchise from Atkins' company.

This is the 5th or 6th FAME guitar I have come across on ebay in the last year. I would buy it for shits and giggles but I don't know where I would put the damned thing!

In your collection. Just buy it a case and slide it under the bed.

Hell.... that's easy! The ones I have seen on ebay all have the custom cases with them (pretty decent cases too) but there is one problem: my wife. Tell you what, I will buy it and YOU explain to her why I need it! Don't tell her it is GAS either.... she'll just make me chug some Pepto!

MastoidMan

09-27-2009, 02:45 AM

I tell you what. You can send me one of your guitars. Which ever one she thinks is not quite as pretty as the others. You can tell her you sold it to me to fund this purchase. Then I'll send it back to you in a few years or so...........she'll never know. :)

Underdog

Well... maybe if we move to your neck of the woods so I can slip over and visit my guitar once in a while. This is a possibility since she just applied for a job in N Carolina...

I grew up in NC, but moved to Illinois during my sophomore high school. Illinois winters are bad enough...

Check out the rosewood back on that!

The ones that have sold on ebay have been for around $100 or less. A couple never sold at all. They do have a purty back and sides on them for sure.

@boyda: Where in Illinois did you live?

boyda

@boyda: Where in Illinois did you live?

I lived in Southeastern Illinois, along the Wabash River. I was about an hour away from Terre Haute, if that helps. I doubt you'd recognize the name of my town, but anyhow I lived in Robinson.

Underdog

09-29-2009, 04:00 AM

I have heard of Robinson. I had a relative who lived there about 20 years ago. Never been there. The furthest north I have been on that side of the state has been Ridgway.

boyda

09-29-2009, 04:06 AM

There's not much to do in Robinson, so I daresay you didn't miss much. Have the time it smells like chocolate, and the other half of the time it smells like an oil refinery.

Underdog

09-29-2009, 04:12 AM

SOunds like Wood River near me except without the nice chocolate smell...

Have a funny feeling it isn't rosewood, but a striated effect they do by wiping the stain on with a scrunched up cloth rag. Either way, it looks good.

I don't know Dusty... that back looks almost like a perfect bookmatch. Easily done these days with photo finishes, but on an older guitar? Might be a thin laminate, but it still looks like real wood without any trickery.

Grain too straight and too light for my liking if it's meant to be rosewood.
This is what I understand rosewood to look like

If it's playable it's well worth what you paid. If they sell for $150 without electrics, add a good $75. Keep it for 20 years and it will x 3 or x 4 its current value.

Can only speculate the future on what has happened in the past. Unfortunately icons like Chet Atkins don't live forever, and a guitar directly linked with him and not a signature will get rarer and rarer. His 2001 death will just see it move along nicely. Flash in the pan jumps in price are risky and you can lose out on them.

Y'mean a '57 Les Paul isn't really worth 1/2 a million?

Dusty

10-04-2009, 08:47 AM

Depends. I doubt the 13 yo billy lids of 2020 will even have heard of Les Paul.
No accounting for what a bonefide collector will be prepared to pay for a Les Paul owned LP
To me it's only worth it's nominal book value $10,000 - $15,000 +/-

I had a slab of rosewood that looked very similar to the back of that guitar. However, I don't know woods good enough to say whether it's rosewood or not. All I was really saying was that if it is simply stained to make it look like that, the person who did it was EXTREMELY talented to be able to make it look like a perfect bookmatch. I could very easily be wrong, though.

Good stuff HF. It's nice being able to deal with a reasonable seller.

I used to use ebay quite a bit, but my account got hacked or something, and they were being a bitch about it. Plus, it was right around the time that I moved up here, so having a different address in a different country didn't help them see things my way, ha ha. Since then, I haven't even bothered making a new account.

Better off that way! It's so easy to click a button for something you want, every time I log on I seem to buy something. When I get it I just put it away.

I would say 6 out of 10 times item is not described exactly, ebay is a hit or miss entity.
