Whether you may download these texts is decided by your local copyright regulation laws:
United States — If U.S. copyright law applies to you, you may download neither the “Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes”—and the short stories contained in it—nor “The complete Canon” at the beginning of the list (since it also contains the case-book). You might want to take a look at the “U.S. edition” canon instead: This contains everything except the case-book. By the way: For the case-book, the copyright will expire between 2016 and 2023 (see sherlockian.net).
Europe — For all countries in the European Union, copyright seems to expire 70 years after the author's death, thus it should be legal to download all the texts from there (see the Online Books Page).
Canada — The copyrights expired 1980 (see sherlockian.net).
If in doubt, please consult the Online Books Page. It contains a lot of references and examples, and a mass of links to copyright information for many countries.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is the third book in the Sherlock Holmes series, and one of five short story collections. First published in The Strand magazine between July 1891 and June 1892, it was published as a book in October 1892. The twelve stories in this collection are: A Scandal In Bohemia, The Red Headed League, A Case Of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Five Orange Pips, The Man With The Twisted Lip, The Blue Carbuncle, The Speckled Band, The Engineer's Thumb, The Noble Bachelor, The Beryl Coronet and The Copper Beeches.
Irene Adler, who appears only in A Scandal in Bohemia, would become a main character, generally as a love interest, in modern adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. The collection includes some of Arthur Conan Doyle's personal favourites (The Speckled Band, The Red-Headed League, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Five Orange Pips).
In 1929, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was banned in the Soviet Union because it contained 'occultism'. As is usual in cases of banned books, it then gained popularity there and the ban was lifted in 1940.
№ 2 in Anne Haight's List of Banned Books.
№ 3 in the Sherlock Holmes series.
This book has 188 pages in the PDF version, and was originally published in 1892.
