Does anyone have an affordable, relatively easy method for constructing a dock with water in pond?

Maybe.

The easiest method that I've used to put a dock on a BOW that has a relatively constant water level is this:

Wait until the ice is strong enough to support a few people walking on it in the same area. Drill holes thru the ice and install 2" Galvanized pipe in the BOW. Attach brackets to the vertical pipe that allows horizontal pipes to be attached. Rest the joists on the horizontal pipes and build the dock.

This dock is 68' long.....

If the BOW has fluctuating water levels, go to http://www.dockbuilders.com/and buy all the floats and hardware from them. They will also help you with the design of the dock. Buy the treated lumber locally.

A number of people have used plastic 55 gallon barrels for flotation instead of the floats that dockbuilders supply. But, that takes more work on your part in regards to engineering and design of the dock. You have to figure out how many to use for flotation, how to build the dock frame, etc.

A lot of us have done floating docks, which I really like. The suface is always the same distance from the water -- during floods or droughts.

If you get a contractor who knows what he is doing, and has a post hole digger on the end of the arm of a small excavator, he can dig holes in the pond bottom 15-20 feet out from shore. some people use trash pumps to suck out holes. Concrete will cure underwater.

Esshup not likely to have stong ice in Miss.

wbjdmd welcome to PB ! It can be done as we have had it done several times but I did not do the work. Send me a PM and I can get you a name.

grinI figured that after our Miss. winter here, you were going to get our winter next year and have plenty of ice to stand on!

There are other options, like what people use in lakes where piers have to be removed every year. Flat plates on the bottom of posts to support the pier, or the end of the pier on a large set of tires so it can be rolled in/out of the water. Either could be placed in the pond and left.

I'm in the process now of building a floating pier at my place, using 4"x6" posts for the fixed portion of the pier.

Great advice! I have been leaning to the floating idea. I have some aluminum floats from catfish pond areators. they are 8' long and about 2' in diameter. I am having trouble figuring how big to make the dock so that I won't overload these floats. Is there a calculation to find out how much weight they will support? How big should my dock be on top of 2 of them? Thanks for the help!

Get out your math book. Figure out how many gallons of water they will hold. Each gallon of water weighs 8.3#. If you have them half submerged, then they will support roughly 1/2 of the weight of the gallons of water they will hold. (i.e. if they will hold 200 gallons, then 50% submerged they will support 830#). You need to figure out how much your pier will weigh too, plus the maximum # of people you expect to have on the pier at one time.

I took away alot of good info from this site as well when I was researching how to build a floating dock. One of the things I did a little differently than this website is to leave the deck off until I got it on the water. You "help" will appreciate not having to lift all that extra weight, if you're moving it manually.

Nate herman (N8ly) and Allan, plus a local carpenter built a small dock Five' 4" wide, 16 feet long, on my small pond yesterday in four hours. Nate has Herman Brothers Pond Management Company out of Peoria Il. It was built on dry land and floated into place on my brim full pond. He has it down to an art within a science. Very cost efficient.

Thank you! This is exactly what I'm going to build this summer. I was hoping you were using the commercial floats, that's what I'm going to use. Are you sure they are 8" thick? I was trying to decide between the 12" and 16" thick float, 8" seems like it would be too small for a couple of adults and 3 large dogs.

Loretta: This is a stationary dock not a floating one. The float they used was only to float it out into the lake before they placed the poles that make it stationary. Both of my ponds have very stable water level and I don't need a floating dock. I greatly prefer stationary docks to floating ones.

How to Install Posts in the Water for a Dock or Pier

  • Choose the best pilings you can afford. Pressure treated wood is the most cost effective to use as posts for your dock. Most professional dock builders believe that round posts are much easier to install and last longer because the wood isn't cut off. Cut off wood exposes the interior of the post and causes it to weaken. Other types of posts to use under water include plastic coated wood, heavy-duty aluminum and concrete.

  • Jet the water out if you're building the dock in sand or silt. This is the easiest way to install posts for your dock if you're doing it yourself. Rent an industrial type of power washer to remove the sand or silt. The process is done by placing the posts on the lake bed bottom and pound them down with a sledge hammer to a depth of at least 2 feet. Aim the jet at the bottom of the post to jet out the sand and water. As the sand is removed, the post will sink deeper.

  • Use heavy-duty PVC pipe to form concrete posts. The process is done by having two different diameters of pipe, one to fit inside the other. Make sure the length of pipe is long enough to go into the lake bottom by several feet. For ease of handling, it's recommended that shorter pieces of pipe are used and coupled together as it goes deeper. Place the 12-inch diameter pipe on the floor of the lake bed and hold steady (this is where the eager volunteers come in handy). Use a sledgehammer to pound the 12-inch pipe deep down as far as possible. Clean out the muck from the pipe with post hole diggers.

  • Place the smaller pipe, 6 to 8 inches in diameter, inside the wider pipe. Slowly pour concrete into the smaller diameter PVC pipe. As the pipe fills from the bottom up, pull the smaller pipe out in increments. This allows the concrete to go all the way to the bottom and form the base of the posts. The PVC pipe keeps the water out while the cement cures. The PVC pipe can be removed when the cement posts are cured. Holes can be drilled into the cement to attach the frame of the dock to the posts.

Introduction: Floating Dock With Barrels (UPDATED)

This is a floating dock that's easy to make and works beautifully.
Here is quick parts list of everything I used:

    4 - 2x8" pressure treated lumber. 8 feet long.
    7 - 2x4" pressure treated lumber. 8 feet long.
    17 - 1x6" pressure treated lumber. 8 feet long.
    4 - 4x4" pressure treated posts. 8 inches long.
    4 - 55gallon plastic Barrels
    100ft of Rope
16 - Screw in Eye Hooks
    10 to 20 - L shape braces
    Galvanized screws and Nails
    Drill/Screw Driver
    Hammer
    Silicone Caulking

    UPDATE
Here are the parts for the ramp/walkway I added (Step 7)

    1- 55gallon plastic Barrel
    2 - 2x8" pressure treated lumber. 12 feet long.
    2 - 2x8" pressure treated lumber. 3 feet long.
    2 - 2x4" pressure treated lumber. 12 feet long.
    3 - 2x4" pressure treated lumber. 33 inches long.
4 - Screw in Eye Hooks
    6 - L shaped corner braces
1" steel pipe...length depends on water depth.
    Rope...screws...hammer.......

    Step 1: Build the Frame

So once you have your parts head out to the body of water you want to place the dock in. Get as close as you can as your final product will be quite heavy and you don't want to have to move it too far.

Luckily I had a relatively flat area near the lake I was placing mine and I could keep things pretty level.

Lay your 2x8 boards out in a square and screw them together. Make sure and keep two sides of the square on the inside of the square effectively making an 8'x8'4" square. I used the pieces of 4x4" posts in the corners as a right angle. I didn't screw these in yet incase I needed to make adjustments.

At this point you can also ready your barrels. Make sure the plugs are tightened and then apply a layer of silicone caulking over the plug to ensure a good seal and prevent leaking. I did not fill the barrels with any sort of ballast but some people suggest doing so for stability. But my final product was quite stable so no worries.

    Step 2: Support the Frame

Now that you have the basic shape we need to add supports.

Measure out the middle of the square and place a 2x4" support there.

The remaining bottom layer pieces are playing two roles. They are supporting the frame as well as holding the barrels against the dock and preventing them from pushing up against the decking. Place two of the boards as the picture shows and lay a barrel on top. Shift the boards around until you get the barrel sitting nicely in between the boards without touching the ground but also fitting nicely around the curve in the barrel. Mark that point, screw them in and do the same to the other side.

Now the top layer of supports that run perpendicular to the rest also have two jobs. The provide the cross support and keep the barrels from moving back and forth while in the water. So once again place your barrels on the bottom supports and measure where the barrels end. Place your top layer supports here and screw them in.

    Step 3: Add the Barrels

After screwing in the 4x4" post pieces in the corner to solidify the structure you can make things a little more stable with L Braces places at each of the support intersections. This will make sure that everything stays where it is and really tightens up the frame.

Now, place eye hooks in the bottom layer of supports where your barrels lay. Two on each side the barrel. Lay your barrels in their slots and tie them up! I started on one eye hook with a knot and ran rope across the barrel, then diagonally, then across again and tied it off on the last eye hook. After you do all 4 barrels you are ready to flip.

    Step 4: Flip It.

I did everything up to this part alone. Now I recruited some friends to come and help me move the beast. With only 3 of us total we easily go it up on it's side and slid it in to the lake. I'd say we might have been able to do it with just 2 of us but 3 worked nicely.

Flip it in to the water and tie it down to something. You don't want it floating away while you go inside to get the beer.

(It just rained for a week straight so the water level was quite high here, hence the dock basically floating in the grass.)

    Step 5: Deck It.

Now that you have a friend or two...and your beer, this part is a breeze. Lay out the 1x4" boards and make sure everything fits nicely. Leave a little spacing between each board. Drink your beer and hammer in the boards along each support. Once you get a few in you can jump on top and finish from there. Feels nice and stable doesn't it!

    Step 6: Float.

One thing that is nice about a floating dock is that you can untie it and float out in to the middle of a lake or pond for a nice swimming platform or just a nice place to hang out.

I'm still working on a ramp and a good way to keep the dock from drifting while actually on shore. I'll be sure to post that once it's complete.

    Step 7: A Ramp Begins...

So now with the floating platform/dock I needed a way to easily get on to it without stepping in the water first, so here is the walkway/ramp.

I'll go through it quick as it's basically the same thing as the platform.

Working with this was different in that the 12 foot boards are much harder to get level where I was working as the slope of the ground really came in to play with the extra 4 feet length. So I used a lot of extra boards and stuff lying around to try and keep everything flat.

Basically though it's the same idea. Frame the entire ramp with the 2x8" boards. Screw them together and level. Add the 2x4" boards down the middle as support for the barrel as well as the walkway area when you flip it over. Throw in the 33" pieces of 2x4" board for support every 3 feet. Add the Eye Hooks for the barrel, rope it down and you are ready to flip it.

I did this in about and hour and a half. Most of that time was spent making sure it was level...and it still wasn't perfect.

Step 8: Flip It and Float It.

Once again, bribe a friend with beer (or in my case my friend actually brought the beer) and flip the ramp over and walk it in to the water.

Now, this is where this could easily not work for some people depending on their shoreline. Mine has a nice little hill the ramp can sit on while on land. So I set that end down and the other side floated nicely out by the platform. I had to add some dirt underneath the land side just to get everything straight but it wasn't too bad.

Now just put the decking on just like before...thanks to those 2x4"s running long ways you have plenty of support for the deck boards.

I actually ran out of boards for decking because I wasn't really thinking...remember, after wood gets milled and sent to the store it is no longer it's original dimensions...I calculated for 1x6" boards, when it reality they are more like 3/4x5 1/2"....so I came up short.

    Step 9: Attach and Secure...

Now it's all finished but the platform is floating free and the ramp is somewhat unstable. So I placed poles (not pictured) on the corners of the platform and sunk them as far as I could in to the lake bed. I also placed a few on the ramp to keep it from getting pushed to the side. Just don't make anything too tight, everything needs to be able to move by wind, people walking, water level changes. I've already found the poles make great places to lauch bottle rockets from as well as place tiki torches! (I'll throw a pic of that in soon)

I also attached the platform to the ramp with rope, carabiners and eye hooks. Check out the pic on how I did it. Now it can still be easily detached to float out if need be.

It's not as stable over all as I hoped...if you walk to the far corner of the ramp it dips pretty low in the water and actually rolled the ramp before I added the poles. I guess I could just add 4x4" pillars and take out the barrel........maybe once the water level goes back down to winter levels.

    Build A Movable Pond Dock

DOWNLOAD: Materials list and plans for movable pond dock (3MB PDF file)

Enjoying your ponds from the shore is great, but using a dock for swimming, fishing or even just relaxing adds to the fun. If you’re going to build a dock, why not make it one you can move to different spots around the pond and even from pond to pond? These plans for a 12- by 4-foot dock will get you out over the water about 10 feet from shore. It features a hitch so you easily can pull it with your tractor when relocating it or storing it for winter.

In general, for this project, you will need treated (or cedar) dimensional lumber and deck boards, fasteners, steel bar, a dock stanchion kit and a dock wheel kit (both offered at roll-in-docks.com).

    • Measure the water depth in your pond at a distance that is about 10 feet from the bank. This value will help you determine how long your dock’s legs need to be.
    • Order one stanchion kit for a 4-foot-wide dock with legs at least 2 feet longer than the depth measured above. Order a 4-foot-wide dock wheel kit.
    • On a smooth and flat surface, lay out in parallel (on edge) two 12-foot lengths of 2 x 8 pressure-treated board.
    • Cut two 2 x 8 pressure-treated boards to 45-inch lengths from one 2 x 8 x 8, and insert them on edge between the ends of the 12-foot boards. Fasten the 12-foot boards to the 45-inch boards with three 3-inch coated deck screws at each corner to make a rectangle, drilling pilot holes first.
    • From two 2 x 8 x 12 treated boards, cut two boards 141 inches long each. Measuring diagonally from corner to corner, square up the rectangle you made in the last step, and insert the 141-inch boards between the ends of the rectangle to make longitudinal stringers. Position the board ends centered at 15 inches from the inside of each edge board. Fasten to the end boards with three 3-inch coated deck screws.
    • Cut 13 treated 5/4 x 6 x 8 decking boards into 26, 48-inch lengths. Starting at one end of the rectangle, screw them to the top of the dock frame using eight 2-inch coated deck screws per board—two screws going down into the edges of each of the four longitudinal boards. At each end of the dock, be sure the last row of screws goes into the 45-inch end pieces to secure the frame.
    • Flip the assembly upside down.
    • Assemble your stanchion kit. Most kits include a pair of stanchions that will bolt to the outer longitudinal dock members and then also connect beneath the dock frame with a cross piece. The stanchions will support the dock legs. Attach the assembly to the dock, centered width-wise, 10 feet from one end of the dock.
    • Fabricate a hitch to make it easy to attach your rolling dock to the tractor’s drawbar. To do so, cut two 2-foot-long pieces of 2-inch-wide by 1/4-inch-thick mild steel bar. Bore three 3/8-inch holes centered at 2 inches, 6 inches and 10 inches from one end of each bar. At the other end of each bar, bore a 3/8-inch hole centered at 2 inches from the end. Using a marker, draw a line across the bars 10 inches from the end that has the single 3/8-inch hole.
    • Use a 15/32-inch diameter bit to drill pilot holes into the bottom of the 141-inch longitudinal boards (the center two stringers). Install the bars onto the bottom of these boards with three 3/8-inch lag bolts that are 3 inches long.
    • Position the bars so that the lines you drew on them are even with the outer end of the dock, where the hitch will be located. These bars—the hitch supports—will support the hitch’s crossmember.
    • Measure from outside to outside edge at the outer ends of the two hitch supports, and cut another piece of 2-inch-wide by 1/4-inch-thick steel bar to form the hitch’s crossmember. Position the crossmember bar beneath the holes in the hitch supports (top side when dock is right-side up), and mark the hole locations for boring. Drill 3/8-inch holes in the crossmember, centered at your marks, and then bore a 5/8- to 3/4-inch hole centered between the ends for the hitch pin. (Start with a smaller hole and enlarge.)
    • Position the crossmember on top of the hitch supports (bottom side when the dock is right-side up) and flush with the ends of the supports, and bolt it on using two 3/8-inch bolts, 11/2 inches long, with flat washers and self-locking nuts.
    • Insert the legs into the stanchion, and secure them per the kit instructions.
    • Assemble your wheel kit, and bolt it to the bottom of the dock’s legs per the instructions supplied by the manufacturer.
    • Flip the assembly right-side up.
    • Attach the dock to your tractor’s drawbar with a suitable hitch pin secured with a linchpin or clip. Tow the dock to the pond, backing it slowly into the water. Stop at the point where at least 2 feet of the dock is still resting on land, and unhitch it.
    • Secure the dock by driving a stake or steel fence T-post between the hitch’s crossmember and the dock.
    • Adjust the dock leg heights as directed by the stanchion manufacturer.
    • If your dock will be subject to rough conditions such as high winds, drive a T-post right next to each side of the dock, about 2 feet from the hitch end, to brace against lateral movement.
    • When winter comes, avoid ice damage by simply removing the bracing T-posts, hitching the dock to the tractor and pulling it out of the pond to a storage spot.

    Pond dock diy

If you live on a standing body of water such as a pond or a lake, you may be wondering how you can make the most of this pleasing water fixture. A waterfront home is perfect for family and friends who love swimming, fishing, paddling, and kayaking. Amenities like a dock make everything so much more convenient.

Floating docks can increase the use you get out of your lake or pond exponentially. There are  many recreational and aesthetic benefits of having a dock, and our guide will take you through all you need to know about building a floating dock for a pond.

    What is a Floating Dock?

Also known as a floating pier, a floating dock is a platform built to float on top of the water’s surface. The dock will have ramps supported by buoyant and air-tight pontoons. They keep the dock level as the water moves or fluctuates.

Floating docks come in many sizes, layouts, and weights, depending on the material used to build them. They can consist of wood, plastic, and even some metal components, but all parts need to work together to form a safe, sturdy, and durable platform.

Most floating docks are removable and customizable, meaning you can take them apart and rebuild them according to the season. Many people choose to keep their docks out during the spring and summer months and dismantle them for storage during harsh winters. If your climate is prone to ice and snow in the winter, you’ll more than likely make the most use of your floating dock and pond facilities during summer.

In the United States, waterfront homes have a significantly higher value than other homes, so a feature like a floating dock will likely put your property’s asking price even higher on the market. Companies like ours have designed easy-to-install and removable decking and docking. Contact us for more on how to build a floating dock on a pond today.

When Should You Use This Type of Dock?

Floating docks are incredibly versatile and function in both high and low waters. Many people build a floating dock on a pond or lake used for swimming and wading, as it is easy for someone to get on and around the platform.

You’ll often find floating docks in two main scenarios:

    1. A Pond or Lake with Very Deep Waters

If the depth of your pond is more than 8 feet, then a floating dock will be your best and most cost-effective option for a platform. Installing sturdy legs that are long and wide enough to hold the weight of a dock and the people using it will cost a lot of time and money. You will also need to factor in the actual weight of water and the shift in energy or any strain it may cause the legs if there’s a storm or strong movements.

With a floating dock, you have fewer elements to worry about, and you won’t have to maintain the legs and support structure every time you use it.

    1. A Pond or Lake with a Soft and Unsupportive Bottom

Another reason to learn how to build a floating dock in a pond is if your pond has a soft bottom that won’t support structures for more than a short period. Many lakes and ponds have mucky bottoms that resemble quicksand. A floating dock bypasses these challenging bottoms.

It’s important that the installation of docks and piers at all water bodies follow all safety precautions and regulations to ensure that the platform is suitable for the venue. You will need to know how to build a floating dock for a pond efficiently and correctly.

Why Are They Good For Ponds?

A floating dock might not be ideal for a waterbody with lots of traffic, but it is the fitting choice for a pond or a lake only used by a group of family and friends.

Some benefits of building this type of structure on a pond include:

    • Affordability: As mentioned above, floating docks are one of the cheapest ways to build a pier, and most can be DIY-ed. If you know how to build a floating dock in a pond by yourself, you can save big. But even if you don’t, these installations are more affordable than fixed docks.
    • Customizability: Most floating docks are customizable. Build it according to your own needs and specifications to fit your pond.
    • Relaxation: Those who enjoy the soothing ebb and flow of water will relish getting rocked on the dock as the structure moves along gently with the water’s waves.
    • Water Level Adjustments: Because the dock moves with water, you will always find that the boat or kayak attached to it will rise along with the pond’s water level too. The adjustability makes floating docks ideal for areas that see significant changes in water level.

    Build a Floating Pond Dock

Kids and water are naturally drawn together. If there's a dock floating somewhere, it's usually the first thing they swim to and use as a platform for jumping in. We used to rent a farmhouse on the Honga River on the eastern shore of Maryland when I was a kid. We would play for hours on the dock there, netting blue crabs with turkey necks as bait, tied on the end of a string.

I've known several people who have floating docks, and you can tell when it's not quite big enough. It wobbles around in the water and if anyone's standing on it, they risk falling in whether they want to or not.

Arlene Smith is the owner of a company that sells docks and recommends a dock be 8' to 12' wide for a stable swim platform. It may sound like an expensive project to build something that big, but it doesn't have to be.

"The most economical way to build them is just with pressure treated lumber," Smith says. "We supply the galvanized hardware that you need for bracing and angles, and also the floats that you would need to build the dock."

The floats are foam-filled polyethelene that can hold 400 pounds apiece for buoyancy. Some people find an old pontoon boat that doesn't run anymore, take off the bottom tanks, and put a wooden platform on top.

    Anchored or free-floating?

You have to decide if the dock will be anchored in place or allowed to freely roam the pond. There are several options for anchoring.

"Some people float them out and they just will anchor it with anchors or they will make a homemade anchor with a bucket of concrete, and they just criss-cross the lines on the end to kind of keep it in one spot," Smith says. "Another way to anchor it is with galvanized pipes, where you would just drive them down into the bottom of the pond and put one on each side of the dock, and secure it with either a heavy-duty chain or a pipe holder, which is mounted to the dock."

The anchor you choose also depends on what lies at the bottom of the pond. If it's muddy, it won't be hard for pipes to dig in and hold the dock in place. But, if the pond has a liner on the bottom, you'll have to use an anchor or cables attached to the shoreline.
