The new Wind-Up monsters in Generation Force make up a playful theme that packs a serious punch. Don’t be fooled by the appearances of these small toys – when their effects are activated and they “wind up” for the turn, they gain incredible power that can be used to form fierce Xyz Monsters or destroy the opposition!
Wind-Up Decks have an advantage that is unmatched by any other theme – they have easy access to low-Level monsters that turn into Level 5 monsters. Wind-Up Dog is only a Level 3 monster with ATK; but by activating its effect, you can instantly turn it into a Level 5 monster with ATK at no cost! Similarly, Wind-Up Soldier is a Level 4 monster with ATK, but you can freely activate its effect to turn it into a Level 5 monster with ATK!
The freedom to turn Wind-Up Dog and Wind-Up Soldier into Level 5 behemoths makes them strong toys in the Wind-Up arsenal, because it makes Rank 5 Xyz Summons easy to perform. Tiras, Keeper of Genesis and Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon are 2 of the most powerful Xyz Monsters there are, and they can only be Summoned by mixing 2 Level 5 monsters. Wind-Up Dog and Wind-Up Soldier make that a cinch.
You can also use Cyber Dragon to make Rank 5 Xyz Summons even easier, since Cyber Dragon is a Level 5 monster that can be Special Summoned from your hand at no cost. You might also turn to Instant Fusion, which lets you Special Summon a Level 5 Fusion Monster like Flame Swordsman from your Extra Deck by paying Life Points.
Even though Rank 5 Xyz Summons are one of the biggest strong points of Wind-Up Decks, Summoning Tiras and Adreus isn’t the only thing that Wind-Up Decks can do. Wind-Up Decks also have a couple of strong Level 4 monsters. Wind-Up Juggler is a Level 4 monster with ATK, and its effect lets it destroy anything that it battles. Wind-Up Juggler even takes down the monster it battles when the Juggler itself would be destroyed in the fray!
Wind-Up Magician is another Level 4 Wind-Up monster. Wind-Up Magician lets you Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Wind-Up monster from your Deck when the effect of another Wind-Up monster activates. By Special Summoning a Level 4 monster like Wind-Up Juggler with your Magician’s effect, you can instantly Xyz Summon the Rank 4 Xyz Monster, Wind-Up Zenmaister!
Each Wind-Up monster can only use its effect once while it’s face-up on the field, but Wind-Up Zenmaister gives you a way to use its effect a second time. You can detach an Xyz Material from Zenmaister to flip one of your monsters face-down, and then return it to Attack Position in your End Phase. Even if you used that monster’s effect before it went face-down, you’ll be able to use it again on your next turn thanks to Zenmaister’s power.
Wind-Up Decks also use Wind-Up Factory – an incredible Continuous Spell Card that lets you add Wind-Up Monsters from your Deck to your hand each turn! Once per turn, Wind-Up Factory lets you add a Level 4 or lower Wind-Up monster from your Deck to your hand whenever the effect of a Wind-Up monster is activated. It’s easy to use the effect of Wind-Up Factory, since Wind-Up Juggler’s effect activates whenever it battles, and the rest of the Wind-Up Monsters have effects that can be activated as soon as they’re Summoned. Like Black Whirlwind in Blackwing Decks, Wind-Up Factory ensures that you have a steady stream of monsters to Summon throughout the Duel, even if you only draw 1 monster to start.
Even without tricks that Summon Xyz Monsters, Wind-Up Decks can hold their own in a Duel with some help from Wind-Up Factory. Wind-Up Factory can be used to get you lots of free monsters from your Deck, including the pugnacious Wind-Up Juggler that destroys everything it battles, and Wind-Up Soldier, whose Attack Points you can immediately boost to when it’s Summoned.
Although the monster line-up is comprised mostly of wind-up toys, Wind-Up Decks are a force to be reckoned with and can beat even the toughest Decks. Here’s a sample Decklist to use as a starting point for creating your own Wind-Up Deck. You’ll probably want a few more monsters for sure, but which monsters you play is up to you!

"Wind-Up" (ゼンマイ Zenmai) is an archetype of wind-up toy-like monsters that premiered in Generation Force and received further support in Photon Shockwave and Order of Chaos. There are monsters of all Attributes, though EARTH is the most prominent
Their effects range from Special Summon and swarm tactics to Level and ATK manipulation to obtain benefits. Non-Xyz "Wind-Up" monsters normally can only use their effect once while face-up on the field ("Wind-Up Shark" and "Wind-Up Honeybee" are exceptions, with the latter not having an effect that activates on the field). Many cards that support them revolve around flipping them face-down or otherwise recycling them.
A "Wind-Up" Deck uses a variety of single-use monster effects to control the field while "Wind-Up Factory" generates hand advantage. You can use "Tour Guide From the Underworld" to Xyz Summon "Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity" (Traditional Format only) and proceed to Summon whatever you need from your Deck. "Wind-Up Soldier" can change its Level to 5, allowing you to use "Cyber Dragon" or "Instant Fusion" to produce Rank 5 Xyz Monsters. "Wind-Up Kitten" works with "Junk Synchron" for Level 5 Synchro Summons.
"Wind-Up" is an excellent Deck for Xyz Summons, taking advantage of easily increasing their Levels with "Soldier", "Wind-Up Warrior", "Wind-Up Dog" and "Wind-Up Shark". Summoning any of the first three and then Summoning "Shark" allows for an easy Rank 5 Xyz Summon, using cards like "Wind-Up Arsenal Zenmaioh" to break Set monsters and Spell and Traps, "Number Volcasaurus" and "Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon" to destroy any opponent's face-up monster (and, in the case of "Volcasaurus", deal massive damage) which you couldn't beat with ATK alone. If dominating, "Digvorzhak, King of Heavy Industry" is also an option, allowing destruction of up to 3 cards, but due to it needing quite some material, most Rank 5 Xyz Monsters outclass it, due to the amount of effort lost when it meets cards like "Bottomless Trap Hole". "Shark Fortress" can provide both protection to more vulnerable low-ATK Xyz Monsters such as "Carrier Zenmaity" or "Number Shock Master" and increased OTK potential through its double attack effect.
Any Rank 4 Xyz Monster can also easily be Summoned by the combo of "Shark" with any of the Level 4 monsters, and due to the speed, allows 3 material monsters like "Vylon Disigma", and "Numbers" "10", "16", "32" and "69" to be Summoned without loss in card advantage.
"Wind-Up Rat", "Carrier Zenmaity" and "Wind-Up Hunter" can produce a loop that can result in your opponent sending from cards from their hand to Graveyard. First, you must have "Hunter" in your Graveyard. Then, you must have "Carrier Zenmaity" on the field, and activate its effect to Special Summon a "Rat". Then activate the effect of "Rat" to Special Summon "Hunter" from the Graveyard. Use the effect of "Hunter" to Tribute "Carrier Zenmaity" and make your opponent send a random card from their hand to the Graveyard. Then use "Rat" and "Hunter" as Xyz Materials to get another "Carrier Zenmaity", and then repeat the loop twice by sending "Hunter" to the Graveyard to Special Summon another "Rat".
However, due to limitation of "Carrier Zenmaity" in September Lists, most "Wind-Up" Decks have switched goals from depleting an opponent's hand to Xyz Summoning numerous Xyz Monster (mostly Rank 3 and 5's) in just one turn using cards like "Wind-Up Magician" and "Shark", bolstered with "Wind-Up Factory" to finish off the opponent (possibly in that same turn) or deny them options through cards like "Shock Master". The incredible swarming power of the Magician-Shark combo allows the "Wind-Up" player to swarm the field with many different combinations of Xyz Monsters to answer any threat, often ending the game right then and there. This tactic is no longer possible with "Carrier Zenmaity" banned and "Magician" limited in the March Lists.
"Wind-Up Factory", "Carrier Zenmaity" and "Honeybee" can provide you with single-use monsters to address any situation. You can toolbox "Soldier" to kill low-Level beatsticks, "Juggler" to break walls, "Kitten" to deal with Extra Deck monsters and defuse Flip Effects, "Rat" to produce Rank 3 Xyzs, "Rabbit" for reuse and deflection, or "Knight" for defense. This is no longer possible in March Lists, as "Carrier Zenmaity" is banned.
With "Carrier Zenmaity" banned and "Magician" limited in March Lists, there is another way to OTK is by using "Zenmairch" alongside "Zenmailstrom", and utilizing "Soldier" and "Knight". Having both "Soldier" and "Knight" on the field, along with activatable "Zenmairch" and "Zenmailstrom" on the field is needed, together with either another "Knight" or "Soldier" in the hand. The combination lands for at least damage, but with an activated "Soldier".
While a very strong Deck theme as of the September ban list, it is not invulnerable and can be slowed or temporarily interrupted long enough to be defeated.
For "Wind-Up" Swarm players, cards that counteract field swarming or effects like "Torrential Tribute", "Maxx "C"", "Effect Veiler", "Needle Ceiling" and even "Summon Limit" and "Summon Breaker" can stop the swarming chains if activated at the right time before they become too devastating. And due to most "Wind-Up" Decks being composed of different Types and Attributes (much like "Gladiator Beasts"), both "Rivalry of Warlords", "Gozen Match" and "Battle of the Elements" can stop this Deck effectively.
In more specialized Decks both "King Tiger Wanghu" and "Skill Drain" can also hinder the "Wind-Up" Deck synergy very well, either by stopping many of the weak "Wind-Up" monsters from staying on the field long enough to activate their effects (including "Wind-Up Rabbit", which is destroyed before it can save itself upon being Summoned) or by just outright stopping all effects from resolving on the field (but "Rabbit" can still be activated however as it resolves while it is banished.
"Prohibition" and "Psi-Blocker" can also slow down a "Wind-Up" Deck if you correctly call "Wind-Up Magician", "Wind-Up Rat" or "Wind-Up Shark" proactively at the right time to hinder your opponent's Deck options. In an opposing Deck with a high number of WIND-attribute cards, "Mystic Fairy Elfuria" is also very effective at stopping almost all of the preferred Xyz Summoning options available to a Wind-Up Deck if Rank 3, 4 and 5 Summoning is blocked.
- An actual wind-up toy is wound up (Summoning it), does what the toy was made to do (activating the effect), then is completed (effect can only activate once). Returning to hand or flipping it face-down and back up signifies "winding-up" the monster.
One of the coolest things about new Decks like Wind-Ups and Ninjas is that there are so many different ways to build them. Since there are so many different Ninjas and Wind-Ups, and they all have different Types and Attributes and Levels, there are a ton of different ways to play with them, and tons of different cards to combine them with. Wind-Ups were the very first Deck to make Xyz Summoning a big part of their game plan, so today we’re talking about how you can build your own Wind-Up Deck, the cards and techniques youll need, and the cool plays youll be able to make!
Wind-Ups are all about Xyz Summoning, and to do that, they need lots of monsters. Each of these cards gets you a free Wind-Up to your field or hand.
Wind-Up Rats effect Special Summons a Wind-Up from your Graveyard.
Wind-Up Magician Special Summons another Wind-Up from your Deck, when you activate the effect of different Wind-Up.
Wind-Up Factory lets you add a Wind-Up from your Deck to your hand when you activate a “Wind-Up” monsters ability.
Rat and Magicians effects can only be used once while theyre face-up on the field. Neither of them high ATK, so youll want to use their effects, then use them as Xyz Materials for a bigger monster. Wind-UpFactory is a Spell Card, so you cant use it for Xyz Summoning. But you can use its effect once every turn, instead of just once while its on the field like the “Wind-Up” monsters.
The search and Summon power of these cards make them centerpieces for any dedicated Wind-Up strategy. But to make the most of them, youll need to pair them with some more “Wind-Up” monsters.
Wind-Up Factory is great at getting Wind-Ups to your hand, but since you can only make one Normal Summon a turn, Wind-Up Shark is one of the most important cards to play it with. Wind-Up Shark is Level 4, but you can use its effect to change it to Level 3 or Level 5. Thats awesome for making Xyz Summons! But you can also Special Summon Wind-Up Shark any time you Normal or Special Summon another Wind-Up. That helps you take advantage of Wind-Up Factory, by letting you play two Wind-Ups from your hand. It also means an instant Xyz Summon, because you can probably match the Sharks Level to whatever else you Summon.
Wind-Up Soldier is a Level 4 that can become a Level 5 for the turn. Pair it with the Level 4 Wind-Up Magician for a Rank 4 Xyz Summon, or with Wind-Up Shark for a Rank 5. When the Soldier boosts itself to Level 5, it also goes to ATK until the End Phase.
Finally, Wind-Up Rabbit can banish a Wind-Up monster from the field with its one-shot ability; the banished monster returns in your next Standby Phase. Whatever you banish comes back “rewound”: if its one-use effect was activated earlier, you can use that effect again. Its great for reusing Wind-Up Magicians ability, or you can banish the Rabbit itself to dodge an effect like DimensionalPrison or TorrentialTribute. You can even have Rabbit hop away on your opponents turn if they try to attack it.
All three of these cards have effects that are really easy to activate. Thats important, because it gives you simple ways to trigger the abilities of Wind-Up Magician and Wind-Up Factory. Other Wind-Ups, like Wind-Up Honeybee and Wind-Up Kitten, have powerful effects for a variety of situations.
A Wind-Up Decks muscle usually comes from Xyz Summoning! There are several Wind-Up Xyz Monsters that youll want to play:
Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity is a Rank 3 with a powerful Special Summon effect. Use it to set up even bigger plays by Summoning Wind-Up Magician.
Wind-Up Zenmaines is the ultimate defender, protecting itself from destruction and then demolishing your opponents stuff.
Wind-Up Arsenal Zenmaioh is a Rank 5, and along with its strong ATK, it packs an effect that can destroy up to four of your opponents Set cards!
Since Wind-Ups are so good at Xyz Summoning, youll want to play other Xyz Monsters as well. Leviair the Sea Dragon and Number Leviathan Dragon are a must at Rank 3; Number Utopia matches Wind-Up Zenmaister at Rank 4; and Wind-Ups can even Summon the Rank 5 Tiras, Keeper of Genesis. Since none of the Wind-Up Monsters are Tuners, dont be afraid to cram your Extra Deck with every Xyz Monster that might prove useful.
With the right monsters, and a basic lineup of Spells and Traps including Wind-Up Factory, you can make some incredible combos that flood the field with Xyz Monsters. Alot of those Xyz would be virtually impossible to Summon in other Decks; so pick your favorites, make the biggest combos you can, and dont be surprised when you wind up winning your Duels!
