Singapore Airlines made global headlines last year when it relaunched its Newark-Singapore flight. The 9,534-mile flight allowed the carrier to reclaim the title of having the “world’s longest flight,” bumping Qatar Airways and its 9,032-mile Doha-Auckland, New Zealand, flight out of the top spot.

Another title shift could happen in the coming years if Qantas Airways decides to push ahead with its “Project Sunrise” flights. The Australian carrier made headlines of its own this fall as it tested several ultra-long flights to Sydney – including from New York and from London – to great fanfare. Each would be longer than Singapore’s current record-holder, and Qantas days it will decide soon whether to press ahead. If it does, flights could begin in 2023.

But have you ever wondered what the longest flight is on your preferred carrier? Or the shortest? Given all the buzz about long flights recently, we decided to see what clocked in as the longest and shortest flights for each of the 11 biggest U.S. carriers.

What did we find? Today we look at United, the last in our look at the 11 biggest U.S. airlines. Its longest route on the December schedule is Houston-Sydney while its shortest is the 66-mile hop it operates between San Francisco and the Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport near Santa Rosa, California.

Here is the world’s shortest (1.5 minutes) and longest (19.5 hours) commercial flight

That’s a blip compared to the 19.5-hour flight that Australian carrier Qantas QAN, QABSY, is testing this week. The 10,000-mile nonstop voyage on a Boeing BA,   787-9 from New York to Sydney will be the world’s longest flight.

The title was previously held by the New York-Singapore route flown by Singapore Airlines SINGF, . That trip takes nearly 18 hours — some 1,080 times longer than the Loganair flight, give or take a minute.

The Westray-Papa Westray route isn’t the only short flight that Loganair offers. The journey between Eday and Kirkwall, another two of the Orkney Islands, takes a staggering 10 minutes to complete.

Looking to take a short trip closer to home? United Airlines UAL,  operates the shortest flight in the continental U.S., a 16-minute trip between San Francisco and Santa Rosa, located in the Sonoma County wine region. (Sightseeing flight operator Greater Toronto Airways boasts the shortest flight in North America, a 10-minute route between Toronto and Niagara.)

In Hawaii, travelers can take a 15-minute flight between the Kalaupapa and Ho’olehua airports on Moloka’i for as little as $50 on Mokulele Airlines.

Of course, flying is particularly bad for the environment — aircraft are responsible for 2.5% of total global carbon dioxide emissions. So travelers concerned about their carbon footprint may want to consider other means of travel — for instance, a 25-minute car ferry also runs between Westray and Papa Westray.

The U.S. Global Jets ETF JETS,  , which tracks airline operators worldwide, has dropped in value roughly 5% over the last three months, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,  and S&P 500 Index SPX,   are down 1.4% and .38% respectively over that same time.

The USA’s Ridiculously Short Routes

The recently published ‘Busiest Routes 2020’ report, compiled by travel data provider OAG, is a comprehensive investigation into the world’s most extreme airline routes, in terms of not only passenger numbers and competition levels, but also length. The USA, in particular, is home to several incredibly short domestic routes, but where exactly can these be found?

United planes SFO

Top 10 all shorter than 65 miles

For a country with such a large landmass as the USA, some of its domestic flights are astonishingly short. In stark contrast to its longest scheduled domestic flight, Boston, Massachusetts-Honolulu, Hawaii, which the report puts at 4,418 nautical miles, all 10 of the USA’s shortest domestic flights are less than 65 miles long.

Even the country’s shortest scheduled international flight, Seattle, Washington-Victoria, Canada, would still be some 20 miles too long to make the list. This begs the question, how short must a flight be to be one of the USA’s ten shortest? The following rundown of the top 10 will examine these brief hops in greater detail.

1) Petersburg-Wrangell, 24 miles

The shortest of the short hops that make up this list is found in Alaska. With 724 scheduled flights a year, this 24-mile flight is scheduled to take 22 minutes. Served by Alaska Airlines using Boeing 737 aircraft, it makes up one part of one of the world’s most notable flight routes, the famous Milk Run.

Alaska Airlines 737

This multi-legged route from Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city down, to Seattle also stops in Ketchikan and Juneau, the state’s unlikely capital city. As well as providing a vital link to passengers in rural Alaska, it also serves as a supply chain for cargo, as the name implies.

The USA’s Ridiculously Short Routes

2) Cape Girardeau, Missouri-Paducah, Kentucky, 39 miles

More than one and a half times longer than Petersburg-Wrangell is the USA’s second shortest domestic flight, from Cape Girardeau just over the Missouri/Kentucky state border to Paducah. OAG’s report indicates that this 39-mile hop was served by 1,228 scheduled flights in 2019, although research suggests that presently no flights are operating on this route.

Cape Girardeau was previously a stopover on a United Express flight to Chicago operated by SkyWest. However, while it is no longer connected to Paducah, both airports do instead have a twice-daily scheduled direct service to Chicago at the time of writing.

The USA’s Ridiculously Short Routes

3) Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton-Philadelphia, 48 miles

This intra-Pennsylvania hop was served by 2,036 scheduled flights in 2019, operated by American Eagle, the regional branch of American Airlines. These made use of Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft, although, once again, the route does not presently appear to be operational. Despite this, Allentown, also known as Lehigh Valley International Airport, did still seem to have a relatively extensive operating schedule at the time of writing.

4) San Francisco-Santa Rosa, 56 miles

Coming in at 56 miles in length, this intra-California flight is served by 728 scheduled United Express flights a year. Operated by SkyWest Airlines, these flights are scheduled to take 40 minutes, and make use of Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft, of which SkyWest is the largest present operator.

5) Milwaukee, Wisconsin-Chicago, Illinois, 57 miles

Just a mile longer than San Francisco-Santa Rosa, this 57-mile hop along the western shore of Lake Michigan is the most frequently served of the top 10, seeing 8,817 scheduled flights a year. The route is also served by cargo operator FedEx Express.

United Express features once again on this route between Mitchell International Airport and O’Hare, but this time with additional competition provided by American Eagle. Scheduled to take an hour or just under, United Express flights are operated by Air Wisconsin using Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft, whereas American Eagle flights operated by SkyWest utilize the CRJ700 variant.

6) Meridian-Hattiesburg/Laurel, 58 miles

Once again, the increment to the USA’s next longest domestic flight is just one more mile, namely to the 58-mile intra-Mississippi hop between Meridian and Hattiesburg/Laurel. Once served by 614 scheduled flights, this appears to be another route that has been put on hold as a result of airlines reducing their schedules in response to the lower passenger numbers caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite this, both airports are still served by United Express flights to and from Houston.

7) Alpena-Pellston, 60 miles

This 60-mile route connecting two counties in northern Michigan sees the least service of any in the top 10, with 521 scheduled flights a year. Served by Delta Connection, these flights are scheduled to take 42 minutes. Like numerous others in the top 10, they are also operated by SkyWest Airlines using Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft.

8) Colorado Springs-Denver, 63 miles

The second most frequently served route in the top 10, with 6,607 scheduled flights a year, this 63-mile hop sees United Express connect Colorado’s two busiest airports. It serves both the state’s largest city by area (Colorado Springs) and its capital city (Denver).  Flights on this route are scheduled to take an hour or just under, and, once again, are operated by SkyWest Airlines using the Bombardier CRJ200.

Southwest Gates Denver

9) College Station-Houston, 63 miles

The second route in the top 10 measuring 63 miles long, this 45-minute hop connects Texas A&M University with the state’s second busiest airport, George Bush Intercontinental. Served by 1,816 scheduled United Express flights a year, this is yet another route that sees SkyWest’s Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft utilized.

10) Detroit-Lansing, 64 miles

The longest of the top 10, but still coming in at just 64 miles, this 45-minute flight connects Michigan’s state capital, Lansing, to its largest and most populous city, Detroit. Served by 3,218 scheduled Delta Connection flights a year, the route is plied by Endeavor Air’s Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft.

Delta CRJ900

It is clear to see from the fact that some of the routes mentioned above are not presently operational that the present coronavirus pandemic is continuing to have a significant impact on airline schedules. With that in mind, who knows how next year’s top 10 will shape up.

A few weeks ago I had a fun single day of flying to Los Angeles and back, the only purpose of which was to fly the shortest commercial flight in the United States. For quite a while I’d wanted to make the quick hop from Sonoma County Airport to San Francisco, a mere 66 miles in straight-line distance.

I had a $75 United voucher to burn, and as I hadn’t found anything else on which to use it, booking an $86 one-way ticket from Santa Rosa to LAX was the best I could do. I then used an Alaska voucher from our delayed Disneyland flights for the return segment (SEE: Turning 20,000 Amex points into 25,000 Alaska miles and $500), making this is very cheap trip out of pocket, less than $20.

No longer a farewell

My original plan was to fly the third-to-last scheduled flight on this shortest of routes, as United (at the time) planned to discontinue it and switch all service out of Santa Rosa to Denver. But United quietly backpedaled on this decision and is keeping the STS-SFO hop. The service has been cut substantially, though. Rather than 2-3 daily flights, there is only one out at 6:00 a.m. with a return late in the evening. I’d wanted to be on the very last flight out, but my work schedule at the time consisted of a packed day of meetings (this also changed prior to the flight) so I booked a trip on Wednesday instead.

While the discontinuation of the service is what prompted me to book, I decided to still make the hop even after United changed their mind. Everything was already in place, and it made for a fun little day of flying and writing, as well as some plane-spotting at LAX.

A small airport with big plans

If you’re not familiar with Sonoma County Airport, it is very much on the small side. Served for years by essentially only Alaska Airlines, the airport itself is nearly as small as my home airport of Arcata-Eureka (ACV). However, service has increased significantly in the past couple years, and Sonoma County is now served by United, American and Sun Country, as well as Alaska.

The plan is to expand the terminal to meet this demand, but for now, the United and American check-in counters are inside a double-wide trailer. No joke. They had to put them somewhere. And a temporary building until they get the new terminal constructed will have to do for a while. To get to the security checkpoint, you have to exit and then re-enter the main terminal. Post-security you pass through the old waiting area, which looks totally forlorn now. Luckily, it appears it isn’t used anymore. It would be a disaster with only eight chairs.

All gates are now out of a temporary tent-like structure, and that is where I waited before boarding the tiny CRJ that would take me the short distance to SFO. There are far more chairs than were in the old area, and there is even an actualcafe. STS is really moving up!

Boarding the shortest flight in the U.S.

Boarding started right on time, and it wasn’t long until we were all headed out to our little CRJ in the rain. I was in seat 4A, a forward window where I could have an unobstructed view for the short hop.

It makes sense that United/SkyWest flies the smallest possible aircraft (that they have) on the shortest flight in the U.S. I’m still not a fan, and much prefer the E175s that they put on the ACV-SFO hop now and then. But you can put up with pretty much anything for 15 minutes!

Taxi was the usual United MO where you depart the gate and then sit for a while. I’m sort of glad the pilots did this, as we had plenty of time, and the wait allowed it to get a bit lighter outside so I could take photos and video. The flight is blocked for an hour, so it wasn’t like we were going to arrive late!

I also had time to read most of an article in United’s in-flight magazine. I have to wonder what poor soul got this lovely assignment.

We departed a full 27 minutes after pushing back from the gate. We could have literally flown to SFO, touched down, and headed right on back in that same time!

Don’t blink. You’ll miss it.

The flight time clocks in at 15-19 minutes, depending on the takeoff and landing patterns at each airport. Flightaware calculated the flight time as 22 minutes, but the path is also a bit off from what I saw in the app. We did not make that odd pass over SFO. Instead, we simply landed on runway 19R. Which was odd, since I’ve both never landed on this runway in either direction, and never seen planes landing from the Bay side. Typically, these runways operate from the opposite as take-off only, with the vast bulk of traffic landing on 28L and 28R.

The flight truly is ridiculously short. Here is a time-lapse of the whole thing so you can experience it in 40 seconds:

I’m glad United is keeping this service. It’s pretty cool to have the shortest flight in the U.S. so close to home. I’m not sure I’ll have a reason to fly it again, but it was a fun little ride! I spent a few hours in two different lounges at LAX, and then headed right on back to STS that same afternoon.
