Today, a war over the value of video game retailer GameStop’s stock has caused what market guru Jim Cramer called “the squeeze of a lifetime.” Howling with glee along the way, traders on the chaotic and obscene subreddit WallStreetBets helped push GameStop’s stock price up from $20 on January 11 to $73 after traditional analysts deemed the stock a clunker.

While this isn’t the first time WallStreetBets has contributed to a surprising market shake-up, GameStop’s unlikely trip to the moon is unique in both its velocity and the allegations of harassment and hacking that accompanied it.

Like other physical retailers, GameStop’s business has suffered in the past year. Few gamers would rather hit the mall than Amazon’s significantly safer Buy Now button. But GameStop was in dire straits even before the pandemic struck. Its thousands of store locations couldn’t compete with the digital marketplaces offered by the game consoles and PC titans Steam and Epic Games. GameStop laid off dozens of regional managers in mid after a precipitous, years-long decline in its stock price. To remedy the situation, GameStop announced it would pivot to a social-hub model, like a modern LAN cafe. Then the pandemic hit.

"It was a meme stock that really blew up.”

Bawse1, WallStreetBets moderator

As GameStop foundered, some analysts suggested short-selling the stock to profit off the price going down. Investors borrowed shares of GME and then sold them in the hope that, once they bought the stock back, they’d make money off the difference. But in August, pet food site founder Ryan Cohen purchased a large number of GameStop shares and began strongly advocating for the company to build out its ecommerce presence. Cohen ascended to its board of directors earlier this month, and as Ars Technica reported earlier this week, analysts and investors responded positively to the news. As the stock climbed, short sellers found themselves having to buy more stock to cover their borrowing. Within a couple of days, GameStop’s stock had doubled.

“It was a huge, massive short position,” says Corey Hoffstein, chief investment officer of quantitative investment and research firm Newfound Research. A significant amount of money was caught in what's known as a "short squeeze," which happens when investors who have bet against a rising stock have to buy it to cover their losses. When the price goes up, so does the loss risk for short sellers. They may then buy shares to cushion that risk because they theoretically face, as Hoffstein says, “unlimited losses as the price goes up and up and up toward infinity.” The price skyrocketed.

So-called retail investors—individuals rather than institutions—began sniffing around, especially those orbiting the hugely popular subreddit WallStreetBets, which has 2 million members and describes itself as “like 4chan found a Bloomberg terminal.” As a collective, the subreddit has previously amassed enough bodies and enough funds to drive unlikely rallies in the stocks of companies like Lumber Liquidators and Plug Power. “It was a meme stock that really blew up,” said WallStreetBets moderator Bawse1. “The massive short contributed more toward the meme stock.” GameStop seemed so utterly doomed that the current situation was actually sort of funny to the subreddit’s denizens. Banded together, WallStreetBets members bought in big enough to move the stock.

Then came war. On Tuesday, Citron Research founder Andrew Left, an activist investor and short seller, tweeted that he’d share five reasons why GameStop’s stock would plummet to $20 fast in an upcoming livestream. (The stock had by then climbed to $) “We understand short interest better than you and will explain,” he wrote. In a YouTube video, Left argued that GameStop is “a failing, mall-based retailer,” and that its value is “not based on any fundamentals, [which] just shows the natural state of the market right now.”

On Friday, Left set up a second Citron Research Twitter handle, claiming that several people had attempted to hack the main account, potentially in an attempt to disrupt his livestream. In a note tweeted from that backup account, Left wrote that “an angry mob who owns this stock has spent the last 48 hours committing multiple crimes,” alleging that the same group harassed “minor children” as well. He says in his YouTube video that someone ordered pizzas to his house and signed him up for Tinder.

WallStreetBets moderator Bawse1 says that he doesn’t know if those things happened, “and if they did, it’s not something we condone or promoted.” At least twoposts on the subreddit refer to an alleged doxing. WIRED has not confirmed whether doxing happened or if it was through WallStreetBets channels. Left did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment. Twitter told WIRED it locked his account as a precaution.

Tensions between retail investors like WallStreetBets and a traditional short seller like Citron Research have threatened to boil over for some time, in part because of a core philosophical difference. “The traditional Wall Street view is that markets are driven by some tie to fundamental value,” said Hoffstein. “What we’re seeing is an influx of speculative retail traders who don’t have any philosophy about valuation.” He quotes a phrase from Bloomberg’s Tracy Alloway: “Flows before pros.” The market will be driven by a flow of capital rather than fundamentals—not a novel quandary considering ’s dotcom bubble. (Then, too, day traders would often pile into a stock on the rise, assuming it would always go up.)

“I think the subreddit brings a new factor into stocks that wasn’t as prevalent as before,” says Bawse1. “It’s called hype.”

Meanwhile, calls of “BUY” alongside emoji rocket ships flooded the WallStreetBets Discord Friday, where over 25, onlookers watched chat fill with diamonds, rocket emojis, and obscenities. GameStop’s stock had just hit $60, a great leap from the $20 it was worth just last week. On Friday, million shares were traded, over 12 times its average trading volume. In the Discord’s voice channel, where hundreds participated in the “gme-rocket,” yelling, humming, and intermittent announcements coalesced into something like a Gregorian chant. The stock continued to rise. It peaked at $ midday today before quickly falling to about $ Discord members urged each other to “HOLD.” Bawse1 says that this is the first time in years on WallStreetBets that “everybody was making money.”

WallStreetBets treats stock trading like a video game, says Jaime Rogozinski, who founded the subreddit but has not been affiliated with it since last year. Buttons. Graphs. Risk and reward. Hell, a Discord. According to Bawse1, a lot of the trading takes place on the Robinhood app, which advertises, “Level up with options trading … Choose your own venture.” Now that the barrier to trading options is lower than ever, having leverage in the stock market can be as easy as having a couple hundred thousand buddies and an app.

“It certainly started as a meme. That’s how WallStreetBets operates,” Rogozinski says. “[WallStreetBets] get a stock, they have fun with it, they make funny pictures and videos and songs or whatever. GameStop started as a meme, but they pushed it to a different level. They’re no longer commenting on the story. They’re wanting to become the story and have very effectively done that.”

GameStop’s stock closed out at $, up 51 percent since Thursday’s close. On the WallStreetBets subreddit, one of the most popular posts declares, “GME!!!” with rocket ship, moon, diamond, and prayer hands emojis. A screenshot of their Robinhood account showed they had $, in the market; they were up percent on the day. Read one comment: “THIS IS PROOF OF OUR STRATEGY. BUY SHARES. BLEED THE SHORTS. FUCK THE INSTITUTIONS. HOLD THE LINE.”

Which of the 10 Most Talked About Reddit Stocks Is Worth a Buy?

I must admit, when I was given this assignment my first thought was I’m the last guy to be talking about Reddit stocks. I think the attention being paid to Reddit and meme stocks is a bunch of hokum.

The arguments abound whether the meme stock frenzy is a permanent part of the investing landscape.

“This is not going to end well,” Former E*Trade CEO Karl Roessner told CNBC in early June while discussing the AMC rally. “I think historically we’ve seen this in the past, but I do believe this group has staying power.”

However, if you’re a value investor, the mere presence of this kind of retail investor is music to your ears. While the sheep are out buying GameStop (NYSE:GME), you can pick up shares in some of America’s better companies that trade at a discount.

That’s not easy when the Cyclically Adjusted PE Ratio (CAPE) of is at the second-highest level on record — the highest was in December — with no end in sight to the multiple’s upward trajectory.

With that in mind, I’ve rated the top 10 Reddit stocks — based on the number of comments made on r/WallStreetBets — from best to worst as a long-term buy:

  • Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)
  • KB Home (NYSE:KBH)
  • Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR)
  • Clean Energy Fuels (NASDAQ:CLNE)
  • BlackBerry (NYSE:BB)
  • Workhorse Group (NASDAQ:WKHS)
  • AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC)
  • ContextLogic (NASDAQ:WISH)
  • Globalstar (NYSEAMERICAN:GSAT)
  • Clover Health (NASDAQ:CLOV)

Reddit Stocks to Buy: Tesla (TSLA)

Say what you will about Elon Musk, but there’s no question he’s built one heck of a company. Soon, Tesla will have a fourth factory open in Berlin. Even though the original opening date of July 1 is no longer on the table due to myriad reasons, it will ultimately produce millions of electric vehicles (EVs) for willing European buyers.

The company has added a battery cell production component to the plant outside Berlin. It will produce million cells annually representing 50 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy, 25% higher than Volkswagen’s (OTCMKTS:VWAGY) planned facility a couple hundred miles away.

Across the pond in Texas, the company’s fifth so-called Gigafactory is getting closer to being ready for production. This plant will produce an updated version of the Model Y using “mega casting” technology to speed up the production process while delivering a lighter vehicle at the same time. It currently uses this technology at its plant in Shanghai.

Tesla has a free cash flow (FCF) margin of % based on $ billion in trailingmonth revenue.

KB Home (KBH)

The largest homebuilders in America are having trouble keeping up with demand at the moment. At least for now, KB Home is meeting the demand from customers, 64% of which were first-time buyers in the latest quarter.

“Operationally, our divisions are doing an excellent job of navigating this environment of demand strength and well-publicized supply chain constraints as we effectively balanced pace, price and starts to optimize our assets and manage our production,” said KB Home CEO Jeff Mezger in the Q2 conference call.

KB Home is so busy that the number of homes started in Q1 and Q2 was equivalent to 75% of the number of homes started for As a result, it expects to deliver $6 billion in housing revenue in at the midpoint of guidance, with operating margins between % and %.

KB Home has an FCF margin of % based on $ billion in trailing month revenue.

Reddit Stocks to Buy: Palantir Technologies (PLTR)

The Palantir (PLTR) logo on a grey wall.Source: Michael Vi /

Palantir has been a public company for less than a year. The provider of data analytics software platforms for government agencies, corporations, and other large institutions, sold no shares last September when directly listed on the NYSE.

The reference price was $ PLTR stock is up % through the start of June

Not only is it growing its business — in the latest quarter, its U.S. commercial revenue grew 72% year-over-year while its U.S. government revenue jumped 83% YOY — it is also busy investing in other tech companies looking to go public.

For example, it has invested in six private investments in public equity (PIPE) in the past three months. These PIPEs are part of the ongoing interest in special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). Palantir invests in the PIPEs to gain financial returns and collaborate with these companies, which use its data analytic tools for their businesses.

I’m not % sold on Palantir just yet, but it’s a good long-term buy compared to some of the Reddit stocks on this list.

Palantir has an FCF margin of 9% based on $ billion in trailing month revenue.

Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE)

Back in February, I recommended CLNE. At the time, it was trading around $ It was one of seven stocks to buy under $ As I write this, it’s just under $11, so it’s lost ground over the past four months.

I liked Clean Energy for several reasons.

First, it provides three kinds of natural gas fuel for commercial trucks: compressed (CNG), liquified (LNG), and renewable (RNG). It’s the only fuel provider to do so. Secondly, RNG fuel enables trucking companies to deliver their services while getting close to or achieving carbon negative status. Third, it’s got fueling stations in 43 states and Canada. Lastly, it’s got deep pockets. Total (OTCMKTS:TTFNF) owns 25% of its stock.

Oh, and as I said in February, from an adjusted EBITDA basis (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), it makes money while also growing revenues at a steady pace.

In the meantime, Clean Energy has an FCF margin of % based on $ million in trailing month revenue.

Reddit Stocks to Buy: BlackBerry (BB)

A BlackBerry (BB) sign out front of a corporate office in Silicon Valley, California.Source: Shutterstock

I can remember when President Barack Obama first entered the White House in January The BlackBerry was considered the cat’s meow when it came to mobile phones. By the time he left office in January , it was in the dustbin of history.

Now supplying security software to automobile manufacturers and other enterprises and governments worldwide — a research firm recently said its QNX software is installed in million vehicles worldwide — the Reddit crowd have taken to the Waterloo, Ontario-based tech company.

Things have turned around for BlackBerry.

At least, enough so to provide CEO John Chen with a handsome compensation package. Proxy advisory firm Glass Lewis recently blasted the company, suggesting its compensation plan had no relation to its overall corporate performance.

As a result of the January Reddit rally, which saw BB stock move from $ at the beginning of the month to a week high of $ by the end, Chen could receive as much as $ million in cash and stock compensation from the long-term incentives issued in

On a GAAP basis, BlackBerry still loses money. That said, the pivot it’s made to software has given it another shot at tech stardom. We’ll see if it gain regain its former glory from the Obama years.

In the meantime, BlackBerry has an FCF margin of % based on $ million in trailing month revenue.

Workhorse Group (WKHS)

The last time I wrote about Workhorse Group was in late April. At the time, it was trading around $ I argued that if it got the backlog of 8, commercial electric vehicle delivery trucks out the door over the next 12 to 24 months, it would have an ultra-low price-to-sales ratio of

Long story short, if it did, its stock would be worth more than $

Well, on June 16, Workhorse officially protested the United States Postal Service awarding the estimated $6 billion contract to manufacture its next-generation delivery vehicle to Oshkosh (NYSE:OSK). The news pushed WKHS to $ at the start of June

InvestorPlace’s Dana Blankenhorn recently discussed Workhorse. He believes that the company was in the commercial EV game to ride on the coattails of big guns like Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM). That’s not the craziest theory in the world.

In the latest quarter, Workhorse delivered six trucks to customers and generated $, in revenue. It plans to produce 1, trucks in It will have to pick up the pace if it wants to reach that goal. In the meantime, investors can expect its quarterly losses to accelerate as we make our way through the year.

Workhorse has an FCF margin of -5,% based on $ million in trailing month revenue. It is for speculative investors only.

Reddit Stocks to Buy: AMC Entertainment (AMC)

amc enertainment stocksSource: QualityHD /

AMC is a stock that I’m conflicted about.

On the one hand, I believe that Americans will return to movie theaters in large numbers come fall. That will likely return the chain to pre-Covid revenue numbers. On the other hand, it has a burdensome debt load.

Despite using the Reddit surge to raise much-needed cash to repay some of this debt — on June 3, it announced it would sell million shares at the market to bring in another $ million — it still has $ billion owed, or % of its vastly overvalued market capitalization of $ billion.

Former E*Trade CEO Karl Roessner appeared on CNBC in early June. While he commended AMC management for selling shares when prices were high, the company is not worth $28 billion.

“Absent some serious strategic undertakings by that company, it’s still just not worth what it’s trading for right now,” Roessner stated.

I couldn’t agree more.

AMC has an FCF margin of % based on $ million in trailing month revenue.

ContextLogic (WISH)

In February, I wrote an article about the e-commerce site with the headline “ContextLogic Has Nothing to Do With Retail”. I didn’t understand the composition of its board. It had no retail experience on its board to oversee the CEO.

“If ContextLogic’s goal is to beat Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) at discount e-commerce apparel, its board of directors is a sure sign that’s not what it’s after,” I said.

I finished the article by stating I didn’t get an inspirational vibe from Context Logic’s board of directors. In the four months since, WISH has lost 49% of its value and trades well below its IPO price of $

ContextLogic has an FCF margin of -8% based on $ billion in trailing month revenue. I’m really not sure what Redditors see in this one.

Reddit Stocks to Buy: Globalstar (GSAT)

space stocks satellite over the EarthSource: Andrzej Puchta /

Not everyone thinks the provider of mobile satellite services is a bad bet.

B. Riley analyst Mike Crawford initiated coverage of Globalstar on June The analyst gives it a “buy” rating and a $ target price, double where it’s currently trading. He estimates that the company’s C-Band spectrum could be worth as much as $15 billion. Based on billion shares outstanding, that’s $ a share, considerably higher than the analyst’s target price.

From where I sit, the fact that it’s currently trading at a price-to-sales ratio of and not making money on a GAAP basis makes it very hard for me to get behind the company.

However, Globalstar does have one big ace up its sleeve.

On page 87 of its K, you will see that it had $ billion in U.S. net operating loss (NOL) carryforwards with less than 1% expiring before It has an additional $ million in foreign NOL carryforwards. So, should it start generating significant profits — that’s still very much up in the air — the loss carryforwards will shield the company’s earnings from taxes for the foreseeable future.

Globalstar has an FCF margin of 18% based on $ million in trailing month revenue.

Clover Health (CLOV)

They say timing is everything.

In early June, I wrote an article about the healthcare technology company, which uses data to provide healthcare plans for more than , Americans. At the time, I felt like there was a fair bit of upside resistance at $

While I wouldn’t buy the money-losing stock, a patient investor with a higher than average risk tolerance would be wise to buy around $9, or hopefully less. And then came the June 8 Reddit-induced short squeeze, doubling CLOV’s share price within hours.

“By afternoon trading [June 8], Clover had already traded over million shares, 30 times more than its day average volume of 22 million shares, according to FactSet,” CNBC‘s Yun Li reported. “By the closing bell on Wall Street, more than million shares had changed hands.”

CLOV stock closed June 7 trading at $ By 4 p.m. the next day, it was over $

In my article, I mentioned the investing lesson a year-old learned about managing your expectations when playing with real money. I really hope he was able to sell his call options in the June surge. If not, the shares have still doubled from a month ago.

Overall, it’s down slightly from its first day of trading on Jan. 8.

Clover has an FCF margin of % based on $ million in trailing month revenue.

If you’ve decided to try out online investing and have narrowed down your choices to Wealthsimple or Questrade—congratulations! Both are solid Canadian options that can help you grow your money and achieve your investment goals.

But choosing between the two can be tricky. While the two financial services providers have very similar options, they aren’t identical. The best choice will depend on your situation and preferences—particularly whether you want to pick your own self-directed investments or let a robo-advisor pick a portfolio of investments for you.

We’ve broken down the differences between Questrade* and Wealthsimple* to help you choose the best service for you.

Online brokerage comparison: Questrade* vs. Wealthsimple Trade*

Questrade and Wealthsimple offer investing products and services. While Questrade is the both the name of the company and the brokerage service, Wealthsimple Trade is the name of Wealthsimple’s online brokerage service. Furthermore, Wealthsimple Invest is the new name for its robo-advisor service, and Questwealth Portfolios is the name of Questrade’s robo-advisor service. Now that the names are clear, let’s dive in and compare the two companies and their services.

Questrade* started making its name as a low-cost provider of brokerage services in , long before the term “fintech” entered the lexicon. Today, it offers almost every type of investment—including stocks, bonds, ETFs, mutual funds, GICs, options, initial public offerings (IPOs) and other equities, such as precious metals—with much lower trading fees than traditional brokerages, banks or other financial institutions. (Read our Questrade review for more information.)

Wealthsimple, on the other hand, entered the brokerage market only in with a mobile app service called Wealthsimple Trade,* making a splash with its $0 commission purchases, sales and trades on ETFs and stocks listed on the NYSE, NASDAQ, TSX or TSX-V exchanges.
The tradeoff, however, was that these were the only investments available. A % currency conversion fee is applied to Canadian-to-U.S. dollar conversions (and vice-versa), which is important; because all Wealthsimple Trade holdings must be in Canadian dollars, fees can really add up for investors interested in U.S. assets. Furthermore, if an asset is listed on both a U.S. exchange and a Canadian exchange (i.e., it is a dual-listed security), only the Canadian-listed asset is available. (You can find additional details in our Wealthsimple review).

Wealthsimple Trade has since added an online platform, and expanded its offerings to include ETFs and stocks on additional exchanges (NEO, CSE, and limited securities on BATS); about 20 cryptocurrencies (bitcoin, ethereum, dogecoin and others), through Wealthsimple Crypto; and recently became the only Canadian trading platform to offer fractional shares of a limited number of U.S. and Canadian companies (Shopify, Google, Amazon, Tesla and more). This lets clients invest in those companies with any amount—even as little as $1—rather than needing to buy a certain number of shares at a given price. But Wealthsimple Trade still doesn’t offer international equities or other investment assets one would expect from a brokerage.

In terms of account types, Wealthsimple Trade offers personal (non-registered) accounts, TFSAs and RRSPs—that’s it. (Cryptocurrency can be held in non-registered accounts only.) In comparison, Questrade’s clients can hold investments in many different tax-sheltered registered accounts (RRSP, TFSA, RESP, LIRA, RIF, LIF) and taxable non-registered accounts (margin and foreign exchange market accounts).

Another big difference between the two services is access to market data and research tools. Questrade offers free real-time market data, while Wealthsimple Trade has up to a minute delay on quotes (unless you pay a premium of $3/month), which means the price you’re quoted on an investment may not be what you pay/get when you execute your trade. Questrade’s new TipRanks tool also allows investors to see U.S. and Canadian stock ratings, recommendations, and the measured performance of anyone who provides financial analysis and guidance, which can help them make informed investment decisions.

Questrade also has a couple of time-saving features, such as a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP) that automatically reinvests the dividend payments you receive; and it offers a free annual membership to the Passiv app, which lets you automate deposits and stock/ETF purchases.

Both Questrade and Wealthsimple Trade have “instant deposit” features that allow investors to make trades immediately after depositing funds, up to certain limits. At Wealthsimple, the basic instant deposit amount is $, and that goes up to $1, for premium users who pay an additional $3/month; while Questrade offers instant deposits of up to $3, (Our in-depth review of Wealthsimple Trade here.)

Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the two brokerage services compare:

Bottom line: Should DIY investors choose Questrade* or Wealthsimple Trade*?

For some, the draw of commission-free purchases and trades may be reason enough to choose Wealthsimple Trade*, particularly those who want to trade small amounts frequently—and especially with the introduction of fractional share purchases. Questrade, however, will be the better option for many other self-directed investors, including those who:

  • Want to trade U.S. stocks and ETFs. Wealthsimple Trade’s % currency conversion fee makes investing in U.S. stocks and ETFs very costly. While, technically, Questrade also charges a currency conversion fee, it doesn’t apply so long as you keep those investments in U.S.-dollar assets indefinitely. Wealthsimple Trade, on the other hand, requires all assets to be held in Canadian dollars, which means you incur the currency conversion fee with every applicable trade.
  • Are retired or have young children/grandchildren. These investors may want to open retirement income funds (RIFs/LIFs) or registered education savings plans (RESPs), which are not yet offered through Wealthsimple Trade.
  • Want a wider choice of investments. As previously mentioned, Wealthsimple Trade’s stock and ETF offerings are limited, and it doesn’t offer bonds, international equities, precious metals or other assets that Questrade does. Questrade’s robust investment and account offerings make it the broker of choice for investors who want a full slate of options available to them.
  • Prefer to set up automated services. The DRIP plan and free membership to the Passiv app allow investors to take a more hands-off approach by having their dividends automatically reinvested, and setting up automatic deposits and transactions.

Robo-advisor comparison: Wealthsimple* vs. Questwealth Portfolios*

Wealthsimple launched its a robo-advisor service, now called Wealthsimple Invest in , the same year that Questrade added its own offering of “pre-fab” portfolios for investors, called Questwealth Portfolios. The two robo-advisor services work in much the same way.

Clients spend a few minutes answering questions online about their age, investment goals and comfort level with risk. Based on the answers provided, an algorithm recommends a diversified portfolio of low-fee ETFs.

The difference between each portfolio is the ratio between higher-risk investments, such as Canadian, U.S. and international equity ETFs, and lower-risk fixed-income ETFs, such as bonds and GICs. An aggressive portfolio would be weighted toward riskier investments (which also offer the possibility of greater returns), while a conservative one will include more low-risk investments. To help you maintain that preferred asset allocation, both services periodically rebalance the portfolios for you.

Both services also offer socially responsible investment (SRI) versions of each portfolio, which support companies that prioritize environmental and social concerns, and have a positive record on human rights and corruption. In addition, Wealthsimple offers Halal portfolios, for those who adhere to Islamic law. (Read our article on Halal investing in Canada.)

Both offer the gamut of account types for their robo-advisor services.

So far, it’s same-same, right? There are, however, a few major differences between Wealthsimple and Questwealth Portfolios:

  • Questwealth Portfolios is not a true robo-advisor. Unlike Wealthsimple, which relies % on algorithms and automation to monitor and rebalance your portfolio when necessary, Questwealth has actual human experts who manage your portfolio for you, without the high fees that most portfolio managers charge for this service. This can be considered a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view. While some may appreciate the human touch, research shows that actively managed portfolios do not fare as well as those that are automated. (Having said that, the past performance of Questwealth Portfolios has been at least as good or better than benchmark targets or other robo-advisors.)
  • Savings tools are another point of difference. Wealthsimple has a couple of quality free services that can be helpful for those who struggle to save. The first is called Roundup, and it lets you link a credit or debit card to your Wealthsimple account so that any spare change from your regular purchases are automatically invested for you each week. The second is Overflow, where you decide in advance how much cash to keep in your bank account; any excess funds will automatically be transferred into your Wealthsimple account once a month.
  • Finally, let’s look at fees. To understand how much each service costs, you must look at both the overall management fee, which is a percentage of the total amount of money you have invested, as well as management expense ratios (MERs), which are charged on each individual ETF.

Here’s how the fees break down, along with a few other similarities/differences:

Bottom line: which robo-advisor is right for you?

Both robo-advisors are good options for Canadians who want a hands-off, low-fee investing option that minimizes risks and maximizes returns.

If you have at least $1, to invest, and you don’t mind that the process is not entirely automated, Questwealth Portfolios wins out as the more cost-effective robo-advisor of the two.

For those who want to get started with their investments right away and don’t have $1, on hand, or who feel more secure with the full automation of a true robo-advisor service, Wealthsimple Invest has you covered. Same goes for investors who want a Halal portfolio provided by a robo-advisor, or who want some additional free savings tools.

Comparison of other services: Wealthsimple Cash*, Wealthsimple Tax, QuestMortgage

Wealthsimple Cash*

Wealthsimple Cash launched in January , offering clients the convenience of an unlimited-transaction, no-fee chequing account, combined with the benefits of a high-interest savings account.

However, with today’s rock-bottom interest rates, the account pays only % annual interest, which is better than the banks, but still not much of an incentive. Perhaps more attractive is the no-fee aspect: There’s no minimum deposit required, no monthly account fee, and you can send and receive money for free without the need for any security questions. Wealthsimple Cash is also the first Canadian product Twitter has integrated with its Tip Jar, a feature that lets users of the social media app send money to each other. (Check out our article on how to make money on social media, even if you’re not a “creator.”)

Other features that are planned for Wealthsimple Cash have not yet come to market due to the pandemic. These include:

  • Bill payments
  • Digital card
  • Direct deposits
  • Pre-authorized debit
  • Apple/Google Pay
  • No FX fees on purchases
  • Cash card
  • ATM cash withdrawals

Deposits in a Wealthsimple Cash* account are protected by the Canadian Insurance Deposit Corporation (CDIC).

Wealthsimple Tax

In early , Wealthsimple launched a free tax prep and filing service called Wealthsimple Tax after acquiring software maker Simple Tax. You don’t need to be an existing Wealthsimple client to use the service, which can handle most returns without issue.

If you wish, you can pay $30 to “upgrade” your return, which entitles you to priority email responses from Wealthsimple’s support team and additional support if the CRA elects to audit your return. (For more information, see our full Wealthsimple Tax review.)

Questrade does not currently have a comparable service.

Questrade now offers existing clients mortgage services provided by Community Trust Company. Launched in March , QuestMortgage boasts low rates (% five-year fixed and % variable, as of August ) and generous prepayment privileges (lump sum payments of up to 20% of the original balance annually; and doubling up on mortgage payments at any time).

The application process for a new or refinanced mortgage is done entirely online, with a team of mortgage advisors available to help.

Wealthsimple does not currently have a comparable service.

Which Trading Bots are even Profitable?

It is trivial to make a working bot, less so to have a profitable one. — Reddit User

When choosing a trading bot to invest our hard-earned money into, we have one of three options:

  1. Use an Open Source script. These would be from Github repositories like Gekko and Zenbot. Essentially you download the source code onto your own machine, compile it, connect up your exchange keys and off you go. They’re highly configurable and you can set your own indicators to kick things off.
  2. Pay for a platform & use their bots. Just a quick Google brings up a plethora of options like Cryptohoper and Hassonline for crypto’s. A full run down is provided here. The way these generally work is you pay a monthly fee to get access to a platform. Then you can basically select from their handful of bots which you’d like to run and you can turn them on and off at your leisure.
  3. Leave your money with a fund. These would be traditional Quant funds like Rentech and the newer “crowdsourced hedge fund” outfit like Quantopian. Most of these options (if they’re actually open to new capital) will only be available to HYWI and generally have fund minimums around $1m.

We’re going to examine the profitability of all three and try to find out which is the best option with solely a focus on which one generates the best returns.

We’re also going to be covering Equities, Forex and Cryptocurrencies together because I believe a lot of the same concepts apply.

When you’re choosing where to invest, the only thing that matters is where you’re going to get the best risk adjusted returns.

And that’s literally it.

Ultimately, all we really care about is which option gives us the best risk-adjusted returns compared to just buying and holding the asset that the bot trades with.

So that’s all we’re going to focus on.

Let’s go!

Open source is basically free. And who doesn’t love free, right?

A little bit of fiddling to download a repository, install the right libraries and you’re up and running.

Money literally shooting out of your computer… right… right…?

I mean, this is SO lucrative that firstly some guy gave up his time to create this platform and give it all to you for free (fwiw top Quants at Hedge Fund’s get paid well in excess of $k/year just as a base salary) and secondly, everyone can make money from this thing if they all just open it and run it too…

You need to realize that nobody would open-source a working (profitable) trading bot. Never. Ever.

I don’t think I could have possibly put it more succinctly myself.

Financial markets are extremely difficult to outperform. By nature they’re chaotic and unpredictable.

If anyone were to find out about a mispricing opportunity, a feeding frenzy would ensue and they’d all be jumping on the bandwagon to take advantage of it, and before long the mispricing would disappear.

Hoping and praying that some guy who gives up his spare time to build a trading bot is incentivised enough to create algorithms that help you make money… for free is a type of hope I’d like to have in my life from time to time.

One Medium writer wrote an honest review of the profitability of Gekko, one of the open source bots I mentioned earlier.

On one minute candles, Gekko performs extraordinarily badly, losing 99% of our money with almost every approach, regardless of whether markets are up or down. — Victor Hogrefe

Victor’s findings were that profitability improves when you look at longer time horizons but notably, “none of them beat buy-and-hold”.

Pretty damning report.

You see free turns out to be quite expensive.

Next up we have a whole plethora of bot platforms.

What the Reddit Comments Say

Never, in the history of the world, has there been a more blunt and honest group of people than on reddit.

Given a lot of these users have given these platforms a test run already, let’s see what they have to say.

The odds of making money with someone’s else software is really low. — R

A lot of people try, and a lot of people fail. An estimated less than 1% of bots that get made actually make money. — R

Easy to setup but making profit another story. — R

Very few bot developers from our test actually bother to align their interests with their investors. This is generally an early warning sign that the platform’s bots have never been built to be profitable in the first place.

And this really is a shame because it doesn’t leave retail investors with many other options.

In the U.K if you want to invest yourself via a broker you’re pretty much losing money before you’ve even started.

When it comes to retail traders, most lose money over time.

We can actually find out exactly how many of them lose vs win by platform; due to a legal requirement, brokers in the U.K. now have to tell you what percentage of their customers lose money.

If you change your VPN to the U.K. and just Google “CFD Trading” you’ll see a page like this:

Literally somewhere between % and % of retail traders lose money.

Pretty wild huh?

The Quantopian “crowdsourced hedge fund” experiment doesn’t seem to be going as planned with overfitting prevalent amongst strategies.

Asking a bunch of regular data scientists to predict financial markets was likely not going to go too well. Especially as Quantopian wants you to give up your “edge” just to get funding *and* you can’t even support yourself with how little they pay out. With this model they were likely to only ever attract talent from the lower end of the scale.

Rentech has probably the best performing Quant Fund over the last few decades.

These are the annual returns of their Medallion Fund from to

You see,

The best performing fund over the past few decades has returns ranging from 25% to %. What’s interesting here though is that whilst they’re positive, they’re not overly consistent.

This is really a word to the wise; it’s good to be rational about what you can achieve.

Anyone offering “passive income” from Crypto’s is in a fantasy land run by a fluffy pink Unicorn overlord.

Besides, you can’t even invest in the Medallion fund. They have to limit the fund size because their returns are so large. When you compound consistently high rates of return you end up being larger than market liquidity allows.

My annual returns at Citi and Merrill were around 25% each year and I generally think anywhere in the 20–50% range is achievable and a decent goal to aim for for a professional investor.

In Crypto’s, the opportunities should be larger as the underlying assets are significantly more volatile. However the opportunity for losses is greater too.

Let’s create a hypothetical scenario.

Let’s say the bot uses momentum as a signal. The bot buys BTC at , and it sets a stop loss at

Let’s also say a bunch of other people on the platform are running the same bot so you have $1m of buy orders to buy at $ and $1m of stops sitting at $

Can you think of a way to make money with this information?

I’ll give you two. An easy one, and a slightly more difficult one.

The easy one

Dump $5m of BTC the second those bots buy. That should be enough to get things moving. The price of BTC moves lower, the bots all hit their stops which is where you buy back your entire position.

You literally just made 1% on $1m risking $5m of capital for about 10 seconds.

The harder one (but still ridiculously easy)

You reverse-engineer the signal so you get it seconds before everyone else. With trade-level access you can quite easily figure out what the bot is up to.

You buy seconds before everyone else and sell right after everyone else has bought.

That’s easily around % on $1m on a product like BTC.

On every. single. trade.

You see,

Financial markets aren’t filled with a whole bunch of polite people that you meet in the street. They’re like a pack of hungry lions that have just seen a lone gazelle.

I get it, it sounds unbelievable right?

Surely people wouldn’t do that to you… would they?

I’d like to tell you a story about an investor running a $bn fund that made a few slightly bad investments and started to lose a bit of money.

So of course he tells investors, and understandably some want to jump ship.

Next, outflows accelerated and there wasn’t enough liquidity in the market to deal with winding down the position. The fund manager had to come out and restrict access to his investors to give him time to get out of positions.

So, investors naturally angry, vented their frustration.

And the press picked up on it, and started publishing articles that the fund is a forced seller on a whole bunch of stocks.

Do you know what happened next?

Every hedge fund in the industry started going after his positions short selling them pushing them all lower.

And of course investors got more concerned and voiced their concerns even more.

And then of course the press started talking about it more,

And then do you know what happened?

Well, let’s just say the fund has currently been suspended for 90 days, investors still aren’t able to get their money out and they likely won’t be able to until December.

As you can see it’s a mess out there. With basically every solution available to retail (self-trading or bots) you end up losing money in a majority of cases. Further, the best performing funds were only available to HNWI’s and eventually become closed to outside money completely.

This is the exact reason why we’re building Credium. Our only focus is on creating profitable crypto trading bots and for retail investors as well as institutional investors. The founding team have a strong background in finance and are the only bot provider that focusses on profitability as the key goal.

What we really want to do with Credium is create top-tier fund-like returns whilst giving you the full control you get from running your own network of Bots.

If this sounds interesting to you, consider getting involved:

Disclaimer. Financial markets are risky. Unlike stocks which have intrinsic value and are correlated with the global economy, cryptocurrencies unfortunately aren’t productive assets and they have no intrinsic value. Therefore you should be very conservative if you plan on getting involved with cryptocurrencies; the risks are pretty huge. This post isn’t intended as investment advice so please do your own research before investing in anything.

Is Dr Steve Sjuggerud A Scam Artist? The $ Investment

How&#;s it going, my friend? Welcome to my True Wealth Newsletter review, and I hope you have a blast reading it.

Stocks and exchange-traded funds have been on the rise for the past few days, and perhaps that&#;s why you are interested in riding this train with the help of True Wealth &#; a subscription-based advisory that targets the purchase of valuable assets.

In this article, we will answer the question: 👇

&#;Is Dr. Steve Sjuggerud a scam artist, or is he a reliable financial guru with a sound investment philosophy?

What exactly are your reasons for saving money? Answering this simple question is key to understanding the type of opportunities you should try out for yourself.

For instance, if you are years old, there is a big chance that you are saving up for a house, a car, or for marriage.

And if that is the case, you should park your money in less-risky but worthy opportunities like ETFs (mutual funds that are listed in the market) and blue-chip stocks (companies with proven track record).

Contrary to common belief, you do not have to waste your time and put your hard-earned cash on different money making/growing opportunities like day trading or forex.

If you cannot set aside time to review the technicalities associated, I suggest you try out government bonds mutual funds or even UITFs instead.

If you have been a consistent reader of my blog, you know that I have experience with these, which is why I have always made it a point to start these articles by assessing the type of investor you are. Is Dr Steve Sjuggerud A ScamI want you to be clear about your goals, your investment horizon, your capital that you are willing to risk, and your risk tolerance.

If you find yourself drawn to the idea of riding the twists and turns of the stock market, then perhaps this is the reason why you are doing your homework about True Wealth&#;s editor, Dr. Steve Sjuggerud.

In your research, to help you, allow me to share what I have learned about this financial service and my honest opinion on whether it is a scam or not.

In the spirit of full transparency, you can rest assured that I am not in any way connected to the company. This article will shed light on the truth, and it&#;s not meant to upsell you on the Stansberry Research product.

Now that everything is in tune let&#;s get it on! 🚀

Who is Dr. Steve Sjuggerud?

The stock market is all about equality, as it gives the same chances to all the aspiring investors. Even if you are from the U.S, you can invest in the economy of other countries such as Singapore, the Philippines, or even the European market.

In this sense, your success highly depends on your research and financial plans. 🙂

And speaking of plans, it is essential to note that your financial plans should be like bamboo, something that sways based on the wind like news updates, current trends, stock value, and the management decisions of the company you are targeting.

If you need help choosing the right stock, this is where stock-picking recommendations can take center stage.

One of the most well-known advisories in terms of the stock market and ETFs is True Wealth, mainly handled by two guys &#; Dr. Steve Sjuggerud (editor) and Brett Eversole (lead analyst).

I bet that this isn&#;t the first time you have heard of Dr. Steve since he has been featured in different media outlets such as Fox Business, Bloomberg, CNBC, and much other reputable news and financial institutions.who is Dr Steve SjuggerudUnder his belt, he holds a Ph.D. in Finance, which allowed him to become an excellent stockbroker and hedge-fund manager.

He has over 25 years of experience in the field, so he is considered one of the &#;gurus&#; who actually know what they are saying.

I found some of his recommendations to be entirely accurate, as the case back in early , when he said that the price of Gold would sharply rise.

And do you know what happened a month after? The price of Gold skyrocketed! ⭐

And his predictions proved to be accurate up to this date.

He has co-authored about four major books about financial freedom, currency crisis, strategies on the most common financial vehicles, and the Investor&#;s Bible.

Upon checking, all of the books have around 4 to star ratings, reflecting how sound and feasible his financial recommendations are.

Additionally, he is also the lead editor of other investment advisories such as True Wealth Systems, True Wealth Opportunities: China, and True Wealth Estate.

So, where do I stand in this? 🤔

His experiences reflect how passionate he is for providing recommendations that are generally safe.

And for me, this is a plus point. I have tried different investment newsletters, and most of them are recommending stocks that are very risky and have a percent chance of flopping (based on my analysis of those stocks).

So, I sincerely appreciate his strategy for someone who has been through the roller coaster ride of the market.

I do not want to sound like I am hyping him up, okay? He also took some stock losses, but the gains are still pretty good.

Since most of his targets are %85 safe stocks, please do not sign-up and expect that your capital will be astronomical in just a year because they won&#;t be.

However, though, the returns will be far better than if you just park it in a time deposit or savings account in the bank.

What is the True Wealth all about?

True Wealth is a subscription-based newsletter that featured financial recommendations backed by research and market analysis. The newsletter is delivered via e-mail every month, and it comes with:

  1. Readers-only guides (the topic varies depending on the latest trends and shifts in the market)
  2. Weekday copy of the Stansberry Digest (basically a stock news compilation)

For the price, I am not expecting a lot since $ for a verified newsletter is already pretty cheap. But if you just want to try out and see for yourself, you can sign-up for their day trial.

Also, if you find yourself unsatisfied with the service, you can simply call or e-mail their sales team to get a full refund.

Here, the investment strategy calls for positions in various economies (around 25 stocks in their yearly portfolio). This means that the recommendations vary from time to time, depending on the movement of the market.

There will be times you will be urged to invest in international markets, specific mutual funds, and blue-chip stocks.

You do not have to worry for total beginners since each recommendation comes with a hold/sell chart to guide you for the perfect price to let go of a stock.

What&#;s my opinion on this? 🙂

Honestly, I believe that True Wealth is all about safe positioning in the market, and this is what makes this newsletter perfect for beginning investors and retirees.

Here, Dr. Steve capitalizes on conservative investing, which is why all the trades are expected to gain in at least a year. So, if you are someone who is looking to get quick cash, then I suggest you try out day trading instead.

Also, I applaud that the newsletters give a pretty balanced view by discussing the pros and cons of investing in a specific stock.

This will be a great way by which you can learn how an investor thinks and how he backs up his stock recommendations with research, analysis, and science.

Are there any True Wealth complaints from my end? Nope, absolutely not. 💯 ✅

Is Dr Steve Sjuggerud a scam artist or the real deal?

Let me say right away that Dr. Steve Sjuggerud is not a scam artist, and he is the real deal. 🥳

Of course, nothing beats personal technical analysis from you, yourself, but having backup information from newsletters like this one can significantly help shape your game.

I recommend this for those who are hell-bent on investing while learning the process themselves.

But if you will just purely rely on this, then let me remind you are just gambling away. It is not safe. It is not healthy.

You might compare this review with the findings of others who say that he is a scammer, but let me remind you that those who accuse him are those who do not understand that True Wealth offers lower returns compared to its competitors.

This is because he wants to make sure that all the recommendations spread out on the board and are less risky. If you want to gain more, then you got to risk more. 🤓
