These are a little pricey as you can get a full rack for the same price, but they are worth it if you compare it to getting all of the separate machines instead. The Rhino belt squat could also be classified as a rack or gym machine. For this popularity contest, I chose to enter it in accessories as it also can be bought as a drop in unit to an RM6 rack. The flip-down safeties are an accessory you can get for the Rogue Monster racks instead of safety pins. The big pros of the flip-down safeties are that they are way easier to set up than pins and also have holes in them for attachments. If you are in a cramped space or hate to fiddle safety pins in the right holes in the rack then these are for you. The squat max MD surprised me in its popularity. Probably there are fewer reviews out there compared to the Rhino belt squat and therefore Marathon-CrossFit.com got a bigger cut of the overall search volume. The Squat Max MD is cheaper than the Rhino and also closer to free weight training as it does not work with a pulley. This makes it a better option for strongman competitors while also leaving more money in the bank. The last accessory on the list is the Rogue Monster slinger which I personally would not recommend. Rogue put this out to monetize on people who already have a Rogue rack and have no space for a lat pull. The monster slinger is basically the pulley system that is being used on the newer lat pull towers from Rogue. While this is sound commercial thinking, Rogue did not pay enough attention to detail on how someone would actually use this pulley she attached to the rack. It’s a nice toy to get but for the money, I think you are better off getting a couple of strongman sandbags or a pair of loadable dumbbells from Rogue. The Rogue slinger is an attachment to turn your existing rogue into a lat pulldown and ranges from $225 to $290 depending on which version you are getting. The slinger can be used with a resistance band or plate loaded option. This is an item where you have to pay special attention to the details to get the right fit. The specifications are:

Rogue was smart by marketing its pulley system as a separate product while they are working on a bigger range of machines with a reflex for commercial gyms. Keep in mind that this is not as tidy a solution as a proper lat pull and will have some downsides when you use it. 

Pros of the Rogue Slinger

The Rogue slingers price and space requirements are superior to a full lat pull machine which is ten times the cost. If you already have a rogue rack, the slinger is an easy addition to add pulley work to your exercise regimen without breaking the bank or a wall in your home gym. 

Cons of the Rogue Slinger 

Cons of the Rogue slinger are:

• Limited weight options 

• Storage when not used 

• Exposed mechanics 

The Rogue slinger is better than bands for resistance, but will not beat a traditional weight stack in terms of ease of use and amount of resistance provided. 

The slinger can be annoying when you are not using it. Rogue did not think about where the cables while going when you are not using the slinger. A cheaper pulley system will be easier to remove and get out of the way fast, but also be less stable when used. Rogue has the Spud Inc. pulley system in its shop which would fit that bill. 

Alternatives to the slinger 

The Rogue lat pull-down will put you back around $2000. With this, you get a full stand-alone lat pull and rowing machine including the weights. The Rogue lat pull is available as an attachment to Rogue Monster racks or stand-alone. The weight stacks and mechanics are quite exposed, but storing nothing will get in the way. Compared to the slinger it is a lot more space and money to be invested for faster and more convenient training at higher resistance. 

The Rogue LP2 is the next generation of Rogue lat pull machines which combines the pulley from the slinger with the components from the lat pull down from Rogue. This machine will put you back around $3000 and will be the right choice for a commercial setting as it exposes the weight stacks and mechanics less compared to the lat pull. For any home gym, you would be overshooting the target in my opinion with this machine. 

The spud inc pulley system is a little cheaper than the slinger. It is easier to install and remove from the rack than the slinger but therefore also less stable. The spud inc is the right choice of you want o transport your lat pull often or get it out if the way faster. In return, you will not go crazy on weights with this one.

Summary of the slinger 

The Rogue slinger is a good solution if you already own a rogue rack. If you do not have space or money for a lat pull go for the slinger. Otherwise, invest in a proper lat pull to be proud and train without annoying cables in your way.

You get a hold of a great power rack or squat rack, but then you find out that the company doesn’t make the attachments / accessories that you want.

No problem! You should be able to find a compatible attachment or accessory, as long as your rack is made with one of a few standard configurations.

Compatibility

The key specs are:

1. The tubing size of the uprights, typically one of: 2″x2″,  2″x3″, or 3″x3″.
2. The hardware/peg diameter that fits into the holes in the uprights.
3. The hole spacing in the uprights, ie: the distance between holes on center. This is only an issue for larger attachments that use 2 holes, with a peg and a locking pin. 2″ spacing is becoming the standard. Some racks have Westside spacing, which is 1″ spacing at a certain height range for setting bench press safety bars just right, and otherwise 2″ spacing above and below that.

2020 Update: This guide used to denote the hole size in the uprights. I have changed everything to the peg diameter, which is always a little smaller than the hole size. The peg size is also usually the hardware (bolt) size used on connecting points. There are only a few sizes of pegs used across all brands (1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″ or 1″), so this gives cleaner numbers and eliminates confusion.

When Slightly Wrong Sized Attachments are Ok

An attachment can fit in a larger hole than it’s made for, but it will be able to wiggle and tip down a little, depending on the bracket that goes over the tubing.

Similarly, attachment brackets can fit onto slightly smaller tubing than what they were designed for. This can be less bad than the wrong peg size, because you can glue shims (UHMW plastic is best) to the inside of the attachment’s bracket to make it fit.

Some attachments work well enough even if they’re loose. Some don’t have enough pressure put on them to make a safety issue, like a rope anchor, but it could still rattle.

The steel gauge (wall thickness) of rack tubing does not factor in. The tubes are fabricated to match the right outside diameter.

When You Should Not Use the Wrong Sized Attachments

I don’t recommend you use certain safety-critical attachments that don’t fit quite right, such as J-hooks, steel safety arms, or plate holders, unless you have a good way of retrofitting it to be snug enough. Use some common sense, visualize it, and you’ll get the idea.

I’ve listed a few brands in some tables. Rogue has among the best and most consistent quality. Cheap Amazon-only brands, which I don’t like to list unless there are no other options, are the worst and might be unsafe. Most other brands are somewhere in the middle.

Notlisted here are complex attachments and accessories that will not fit any other racks, such as those that mount on the top or bottom crossmembers or need the rack to be a specific width between uprights. Examples are special pull up bars or rack extensions.

Rep still uses metric hole spacing, and it is 50mm/1.98″ instead of 2″. The second hole on their attachments that use two holes (with a hitch pin) will not line up quite right on Rogue and other racks.

** The Body Solid SPR1000 takes 5/8″ pegs facing the front/back, and 3/4″ pegs on the sides. Many of its attachments are made to fit the side holes, which are incompatible with any other racks.
