In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, more people are working from home than ever, and the need to stay in touch or log into conference calls has led to a shortage of common tech accessories like webcams and USB microphones from retailers online.
Wyze, a company known for its small-but-mighty smart security cameras has come up with a quick fix: it’s issued a free firmware update that allows you to use its Wyze Cam and Wyze Cam Pan as a webcam.
More from Rolling Stone
Both cameras cost well below $50, and the Wyze Cam Pan is still currently in stock (Note: while the Wyze Cam is backordered, a bundle that includes a MicroSD card is still in-stock for $39; that’s good because you’ll need a MicroSD card to use the Wyze Cam Pan as a webcam, too).
All of the features that make the Wyze Cam Pan a great smart security camera carry over when it’s used as a webcam. It has a maximum resolution of 1080P, so you’ll look clear; a built-in microphone, so your colleagues can hear you; and a wide, 110-degree field of view, so people will be able to see your entire room (whether this is good or bad is up to you.)
The camera’s namesake feature refers to the fact that it tilts up and down and pans around to follow objects in motion. The panning feature will be disabled in webcam mode, but the ability to physically change its angle is very useful if you want to get the right angle for your video call.
Wyze goes out of its way to state that its cameras were not explicitly designed to be used as webcams. It’s also important to note that you can convert the Wyze Cam or Wyze Cam Pan back into a smart security camera once everything returns to normal by installing the latest version of the camera’s normal firmware.
That caveat aside, Wyze says the camera was tested on Windows 7, Windows 10, and MacOS 10.13 (High Sierra), and was able to get it to work with Zoom, GoToMeeting, Blue Jeans, Google Hangouts, Skype, and Cisco. These tests were conducted with the cameras connected to a computer using a USB-A to USB-A cable; they had mixed results when they tried using a USB-A to USB-C cable.
If you want to use the Wyze Cam or Wyze Cam Pan as a webcam, the process is actually pretty simple. Download the firmware for the model of camera you want to use from Wyze’s site, insert a MicroSD card onto your computer, and drag the firmware file onto it. Eject the MicroSD card from your computer, insert it into the camera, then plug the camera into your computer. This may sound complicated if you’re unfamiliar with the word firmware, but don’t worry, it’s almost as easy as installing an app on your computer. If your computer doesn’t have an SD card reader, you can get an adapter that plugs into either a USB A or USB-C port.
At most, the Wyze Cam Pan, MicroSD Card, and a USB adapter will cost you roughly $60, which is significantly less than the current price third-party sellers are charging for dedicated webcams. It’s not the ideal solution, but it’ll definitely be better than the webcam built into your laptop — if it has one. Plus, you can eventually repurpose it into a smart security camera to monitor part of your home, which isn’t a feature supported by a traditional computer webcam.

How to turn your Wyze cam into a webcam
With much of the world working from home and turning to video conferencing to connect with colleagues, webcams have become scarce commodities on AmazonRemove non-product link and other online retailers. But even if you can’t find a webcam in stock (or an affordable one, anyway), you can still Zoom or Skype chat from home if you have a spare Wyze cam handy.

The tech gurus at Wyze say they’ve devised a hack for turning your Wyze Cam v2 or Wyze Cam Pan into an impromptu webcam. Granted, your jury-rigged Wyze webcam won’t be able to compete with the performance of, say, Logitech’s popular 1080p desktop webcamsRemove non-product link, and Wyze itself makes it clear that its budget security cameras are “not designed to be used as a webcam.”
But if you need a webcam to work from home and you can’t snag one online, this relatively simple Wyze hack is better than nothing.
The trick involves flashing the Wyze cam’s firmware so that when it’s plugged into your Windows PC or Mac via USB, your system recognizes it as a webcam. Besides the Wyze cam itself, you’ll need a USB 3.0 Type-A to Type-A cable, along with a MicroSDHC card (which you probably already have installed in your Wyze cam for local storage of security video).

Wyze has the complete step-by-step instructions on its support site. In a nutshell, the steps involve downloading a tweaked firmware file onto the MicroSDHC card, inserting the memory card into the Wyze cam to flash its firmware to the new version, connecting the camera to your system via the USB cable, and then selecting “HD USB Camera” as the video source in your video conferencing software. From start to finish, the procedure should take less than 10 minutes.
Wyze says that it has successfully tested its webcam trick with Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, GoToMeeting, Blue Jeans, and Cisco. That said, Wyze suggests using your own microphone because the microphone audio on the camera “may be low.”
Wyze also noted that the firmware is an “as-is” update, and “we are not planning on continuous improvements or bug fixes” for the patch.
When you’re ready to turn your Wyze cam back into a security camera again (it won’t work as a security cam and a webcam at the same time), you’ll need to re-flash its firmware, and the directions are right here.

Smart home gadget maker Wyze has released a firmware update and set of instructions for turning its low-cost security camera into a working webcam at a time when proper webcams from brands like Logitech are increasingly hard to find.
The update, which was released roughly an hour ago on Wyze’s support website, involves manually installing firmware onto your Wyze camera that will temporarily turn it into a webcam, after which it will no longer connect to the Wyze app and function normally. However, Wyze says you can reverse the process to restore security camera access to the device and have it function normally again.
The instructions say you’ll need a Wyze Cam v2, a microSD card, and a USB-A to USB-A cable for transferring the free firmware update from your computer to the camera. According to Wyze, all you need to do is drop the firmware onto the root directory of the memory card, plug the memory card into an unplugged Wyze Cam v2, and then hold the setup button while restarting to flash the firmware onto the camera and reboot it as a webcam.
From there, you should be able to plug the device into your Mac or Windows machine (being careful to use the USB-A port of the device and not the microUSB power port) and manually select it as a third-party HD output video source for applications like BlueJeans, Google Hangouts, Skype, and Zoom, among other providers.
It’s not an elegant solution, and I’m having trouble actually getting it to work on my own Wyze Cam here at home. That may have something to do with only having access to a formatted microSD I use for external storage on my Nintendo Switch. (One solution there might be copying the files off, formatting the card, installing the firmware, and formatting again for the Switch before transferring the files back.)
Regardless, for those in need of a webcam who are having trouble finding one right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has office workers worldwide working from home, this could be a solution if you have the necessary gadgets lying around the house.

Behind the scenes
A letter to you, from Wyze.
You’ve inspired us over the last two years with videos of meteors racing across the sky, sunsets over mountain ranges we thought only existed in movies, and visits from mother nature in the form of wildlife and spectacular lightning storms.
You’ve stretched the limits of our indoor camera with use cases we never anticipated and conditions we thought impossible. You made makeshift outdoor housings out of milk jugs, 3D printings, and bird houses.
Your tenacity to go beyond our prescribed instruction has made it clear we need to meet you with a camera that can keep up with your curiosity. Capturing the world can’t happen when you’re limited to your living room, so we created a camera that goes beyond that.
We spent two years on phone calls that carried into the next morning, on international flights where sleep became a luxury; and on user interviews listening to what you wanted to see in an outdoor camera. All leading up to a camera worthy of looking after your home and those within it.
We cut wires, removed boundaries, and lab tested under every extreme condition imaginable. We’ve built you a battle-hardened camera capable of going places your indoor camera wouldn’t even dream about—thriving in the rains of Seattle all the way to the heatwaves of Miami and everything in between.
Performance-packed hardware and software found in cameras 3x the price weren’t added to win an award. They were added to earn your respect.
Wyze Cam Outdoor may be sold by Wyze, but it was inspired by you. And we’re incredibly proud to finally show it off.

In the bedroom, the wife went to the edge of the bed, leaned on her hands and, getting down on all fours, moved to the middle. There she froze in this position, without turning her head and giving us a great opportunity to examine her pussy, facing us. Sergei began to undress, throwing his clothes on the floor.
I followed his example. A few seconds later, we stood naked, with protruding members in front of the shamelessly exposed ass of my beloved wife.
