Sheriff says pricey chairs were needed for employees
The purchase of four ergonomic chairs by the Washington County Sheriffs Office is raising the eyebrows of some taxpayers but those who use them say they were necessary.
The chairs in question were purchased in the spring at a total cost of almost $8,Two of the chairs went to the Washington County Jail for their control room and were paid for out of the general budget, while the other two chairs went to the sheriffs office on Fourth Street for dispatch and were paid for out of the fund.
Thats kind of ridiculous. Its a little high, said Steven Crites, 52, of Belpre.
Sgt. Jennifer Erb is one of the people who uses the chairs in dispatch.
These chairs are actually sat in 24 hours a day, days a year. They dont get a break. The people are different sizes, different shapes, different issues, different ages, so they can all be comfortable, she said. Its nice because each person can adjust to what makes them feel comfortable, because sometimes youre stuck in them for 12 hours. Sometimes you can get up and get a break and sometimes you cant. It all depends on the call volume.
Sheriff Larry Mincks said they are required to sit in their chairs for long periods of time.
They can go to the bathroom and back, but other than that, they are sitting in that chair, he said. So, if you calculate, for one chair, in nine years and three months, thats 81, hours.
He said the chairs that they are currently replacing had a five-year warranty, but in , they started deteriorating. Parts were bought to try to fix them but it didnt help.
The new chairs are Iron Horse Series which features lumbar support, as well as height and headrest adjustments.
The reason we have to have them sitting in there is we are a center. These people also dispatch for 17 different fire departments, and thats squad calls, fires, any type of emergencies, Mincks said. In addition to that, they dispatch for our officers. In the daytime, there could be as many as 12, because we have detectives and people out.
He added that they dispatch also for the Beverly and New Matamoras police departments.
So, you have two people here and thats what theyre handling in a days time. The Wood County center also uses chairs similar to this and theyre chairs, I think, are about $1,, Mincks added. Our biggest thing is keeping the employee as comfortable as possible if we can during that shift. And we did look around and this Iron Horse brand seems to be the best brand.
Erb said last year, dispatch took around 17, calls, with a total of 63, to 64, calls last year.
While two of the chairs went to dispatch, the other two went to the jail for their control room.
Maj. Greg Nohe, jail administrator, said they purchased the chairs because the chairs are occupied 24/7.
Wed been spending money on repairing the chairs that wouldnt last, he said. They werent durable.
He said they would rather invest in chairs that are comfortable and durable and last longer, which he believes is a cost saving measure.
Hopefully well get 10 years out of them, he said.
Mincks explained that at the jails control room, there is an officer who controls all the doors in the facility and constantly monitors all the inmates. The jails capacity is inmates, but some are only sentenced to weekends. There have been as many as many as or housed at once.
Its a very demanding job, so thats why we try to provide them with a chair thats going to last, he said.
Still, some think the price for the chairs was a little high.
Whoo. That seems like it could have been used for something more useful than chairs. That $8, is a little on the pricey side. It could have been used to benefit more people, said Dave Enoch, 48, of Marietta. But I guess they do have to sit in it a long time so comfort is important.

Although Valo advertises their numerous fabric options, they do not provide color swatches on their website for dealers to download. Most online retailers will only feature the Grade A, black fabric option.
Tip: If you desire a color other than black, I recommend contacting an authorized dealer via phone to inquire about additional color options.
Shipping and Assembly
The Valo Magnum ships FedEx/UPS Ground for small orders (usually three chairs or less). Larger orders will ship LTL with standard tailgate or dock to dock delivery. If you need special services for your delivery, then contact your authorized dealer so that they can have Valo arrange for this. Additional charges will typically apply.
The Magnum ships knocked down (parts) and ready-to-assemble. The assembly is pretty straight forward and should take around 30 minutes for the average user. Valo does offer the option to have the seat, back and arms pre-assembled. You would only be left with the cylinder, base and casters to take care of. There is an additional charge for this service.
The Magnum warranty only applies to the original purchaser, and proof of purchase from an authorized dealer will be required to file a claim. Once you file a claim and it is approved, Valo will send out the necessary replacement parts at no charge. It will be your responsibility to replace the damaged parts.

Valo Magnum Pricing
The Magnum is a mid market product in the dispatch chair industry. Chairs like the Concept Seating HR and the Iron Horse may outshine the Magnum, but they will cost you more than twice as much as a Magnum. The Magnum is more expensive than your average import chair, but an import chair will never have the build quality or warranty the Magnum does.

|Standard Black Magnum Chair||$||$|
|Soft Wheel Breaking Casters||$||$|
|Pre-Assembly of Seat, Back and Arms||$||$|
What do I like?
The overall build quality on the Magnum is quite good. The parts fit together tightly and the chair does not have areas that wiggle or make noise. The functions are smooth and easy to use. It feels like a very solid product that will last for a long time. This is a direct result of the high standards they brought to the USA from Germany.
The armrests have a very unique design because they are attached to the backrest, unlike most chairs that have arms attaching to the seat. This combined with their lever lock and release system creates a huge height adjustment range. The arms will go as low as the seat, and can be completely removed if needed. The arm caps are also extremely adjustable, which is great for accommodating a wide range of users or seating positions.
There are very few mesh back 24/7 chairs with big and tall weight ratings, so this is naturally one of the biggest upsides to the Magnum chair.
Another positive is that the Magnum does not use a mesh only seat, which is something I discussed at great length in our mesh chair problems article. The padded mesh seat was still comfortable after nine hours of use.
The price for the Magnum may be its most positive aspect. The selection of 24/7 chairs that have a high build quality, numerous adjustments available, and a high weight rating at an affordable price is limited. The Magnum is a good option for customers that can’t go with the $1,+ models, but want to avoid going with a cheap chair that will need to be replaced within a couple years.
There is a lot of value in the warranty that Valo provides. The warranty provided on the Magnum is similar to those provided on chairs selling for $1,+. The warranty provides peace of mind knowing that you will have functional chairs for five years at a minimum. This is a very strong guarantee for a mid-level 24/7 chair.
What are my concerns?
Limited Range of Users
The Magnum chair is a direct copy of the extremely popular Valo Viper chair. The problem is that the Viper is a standard sized chair, which means that the Magnum is not a true big and tall chair. Some of the parts on the Magnum are beefed up to handle the increased weight and shift rating, but the dimensions of the chairs remain the same. This can cause problems for customers that may be expecting the chair to be larger than a standard office chair, considering it has a lbs weight rating. Most big and tall chairs start out with a 21”W seat and go up from there; the Magnum seat is ”W.
The lack of back height adjustment, seat depth adjustment, and taller cylinder options, further limits the amount of users that can comfortably use the Magnum.
The seat frame can be uncomfortable when coming into contact with your legs. The entire seat has a thick, hard edge encircling it. I noticed the front of the seat frame coming into contact with my calves very frequently, from resting my feet on the chair base. This forced me to change the way I would typically position my legs. I could see this also being a problem with larger individuals that may come into contact with the sides of the seat frame.
Seat Upholstery Options
Making the fabric choices available to the general public on their website would be a huge improvement. Right now, dealers are unable to offer the entire Valo Furniture upholstery selection because it is not made readily available. From the customer’s perspective, they are unable to see the fabric options unless they are willing to wait for a fabric card to be mailed. Fabric cards will often have very small fabric swatches that can make it difficult to depict the full pattern.
Overall, I think the Valo Magnum 24/7 chair is a very good product. While some improvements could be made, I do not feel that they are deal breaking ,unless you are looking for a true big and tall chair. It is produced by a very reputable company and has a solid warranty. After using this product for long hours at a time, I feel more confident than ever recommending the Valo Magnum 24/7 Chair to customers looking for a mid-level 24 hour chair.

Sitting on the job isn't cheap for Anderson County dispatchers: $30, for 20 chairs
The chair that Andrea Roderick sits in while answering calls tilts noticeably when she shifts her weight.
Roderick, who has worked as an Anderson County emergency dispatcher for 11 years, says spending hour shifts on the unstable seat aggravates her back problems.
Several other chairs in the county dispatch center also are showing signs of age. A woman seated at a work station near Roderick uses a chair with a broken arm rest. Some of the chairs in the worst condition are stored in an office.
The time has come to replace the chairs, said Becky Carter, communications director at the dispatch center, which is at the Anderson Regional Airport.
Anderson County Council members agreed Tuesday to spend $30, to buy 20 new, leather chairs for the dispatch center.
"These chairs are very pricey," Councilman Ray Graham acknowledged. "It does have to be a chair where they can literally sit in it for 12 hours a day and still function and do their job properly."
The county is buying the chairs from Elite Ergonomics in Cumming, Georgia. The order will include 10 Iron Horse Series chairs priced at $1, apiece and 10 Iron Horse Series chairs priced at $1, The Iron Horse has a pound weight rating and can accommodate users between 5-foot-9 and 6-foot The Iron Horse is for smaller employees between 5-foot-6 and 6-foot-3 with a maximum weight of pounds.
"These chairs aren't just everyday office chairs," council Chairman Tommy Dunn said. He said the county's dispatchers deserve to be comfortable.
"This is a very stressful job," Dunn said. "I know that I couldn't do it."
Councilwoman Gracie Floyd said she was concerned that only two of nine firms contacted by the county regarding the new chairs submitted bids. The other bid of $45, came from Alfred Williams & Company of Greenville.
Another inch TV sparks discussion
The costly chairs for the dispatch center were not the only expenditure that drew scrutiny at Tuesday's council meeting, which was the final one of the year. County Administrator Rusty Burns and council members also discussed the purchase of an inch Samsung TV with a video conferencing system for the county's economic development office.
"To call this a TV is a misnomer because it is much more than a television," Burns said.
MORE:Unexpected savings: Anderson County gets price cut from Pendleton mayor on new inch TV
The county is paying $5, to Crenshaw's TV and Appliance for the TV, related equipment and installation. The same store, which is owned by Pendleton Mayor Frank Crenshaw, recently provided the county with another inch Samsung TV that was mounted in a second-floor conference room in the historic Anderson County Courthouse that houses county government offices.
"I definitely don't think it's something that we need to put in every conference room," Graham said. But he said the TV in the courthouse conference room "has been very useful" and he thinks a similar TV will be beneficial for the economic development office.
OTHER NEWS:Apartments are needed at County Square development in downtown Anderson, study says
Councilman Craig Wooten said the county needs some cutting-edge technology in its aged facilities.
"We have economic development operating in an over year-old parsonage," he said. "We operate in a over year-old courthouse."
