NOW that we've come to the Sunday on which we're privileged to present the list of pictures which we consider the ten best of the year, let's not beat about the bush in coy fashion: This has been a good year for films. At

You may notice that seven of the pictures offered on this list are in the nature of light entertainment, and two of these are musical films. This is extraordinary. Such a predominance of comedy and satire has not occurred in my selections in a number of years. It may have some interesting significance, but I don't think it has. I think it is merely a case of the cyclical swing, if anything.

As started last year, I have selected from both foreign‐language and English‐language films, regarding them all as qualified for consideration on the “top 10” list. It is noticeable that, of my selections, one is Italian, one French, one Japanese, two are British, one an American “independent” and ‐the rest were “made in Hollywood.”

So here they are, with some capsule comments, listed in the order in which they opened in New York:

Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, screenplay by Stanley Kubrick, Terry Southern and Peter George, based on the book, “Two Hours to Doom” (“Red Alert”), by Mr. George; directed and produced by Mr. Kubrick for Columbia. As grotesque and “sick” as was the satire projected by this film—insane and incompetent Air Force generals and top government officials cause the destruction of the world by a nuclear bomb—it was an extraordinary cinematic creation, excitingly written, directed and played by Peter Sellers, Sterling Hayden, George C. Scott, Keenan Wynn and a large cast.

The Servant, screenplay by Harold Pinter from an original story by Robin Maugham; directed by Joseph Losey and produced by him and Norman Priggen for American release by the Landau Company. This British‐made contemplation of the subtle corruption and degradation of a young London bachelor by his sadistic 4

That Man From Rio, screenplay by J. P. Rapeneau, Ariane Mnouchkine, Daniel Boulanger and Philippe De Broca; directed by Mr. De Broca and produced by Alex‐andre Mnouchkine and Georges Dancigers for American release by Lopert Pictures. Rich cinematic inventiveness, vitality and wit were revealed in this French comedy thriller and/or tonguein‐check travesty on all the archeological mystery‐adventure movies and “chase” fiims ever made. Jean‐Paul Belmondo raced through it (after Frangoise Dorleac) with gay élan.

One Potato, Two Potato, screenplay by RaphaeI Hayes and Orville H. Hampton; directed by Larry Peerce; produced by Sam Weston for Bawaico Pictures. A Cinema V release. By virtue of a clear and cogent screenplay and a businesslike naturalistic style, this urgent drama of a white mother's anguish when she is faced with having to give up her child because she has married a Negro was the most forceful and impressive American‐made drama of the year. Barbara Barrie was most moving as the mother.

A Hard Day's Night, screenplay by Alun Owen; directed by Richard Lester; produced by Walter Shenson for United Artists. The big surprise of the year was this rambunctious and wildly free‐wheeling comedy presenting the mop‐haired Beatles, the Liverpool rock‐n‐roll quartet. It was farce in the old Marx Brothers manner—that is, extravagantly eccentric action, blended with a clatter of crazy dialogue—giving an illusion of complete spontaneity. The boys were charming and disarming. Wiltrid Brambell abetted their japes.

Woman in the Dunes (Suno No Onna), screenplay by Kono Abe, based on his own novel; directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara; produced by Kiichi Ichikawa and Tadashi Ohono for Teshigahara Productions. A Pathe Contemporary release. In this strangely poetic drama of a man and woman trapped at the bottom of a sand dune is encompassed a disturbing allegory of the fate of man in the world—a strong expression of the enslavement of the spirit by all

Mary Poppins, screenplay by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, based on the “Mary Poppins” books by P. L. Travers; directed by Robert Stevenson; co‐produced by Walt Disney and Bill Walsh for Buena Vista. Again the familiar Disney staples of fantasy, cheerfulness, charm, pathos, sentiment and humor abound in this expert blend of a live‐action story and cartoon animation telling of an English nursemaid, circa , and the London family she serves. Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and a dandy cast handle the acting, singing and dancing delightfully.

My Fair Lady; screenplay by Alan Jay Lernev, based on the stage musical by Mr. Lerner and Frederick Loewe, from “Pygmalion,” by G.B. Shaw; directed by George Cukor; costumes and sets by Cecil Beaton; produced by Jack L. Warner for Warner Brothers. Superlatives are in order for this brilliant cinematic rendering of the Lerner‐Loe we musical about the Covent Garden flower girl who is made into a fine lady. Audrey Hepburn as Eliza is the sensation. Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway and many more acquit themselves in the fashion that the production demands.

The Americanization of Emily, screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky, based on the novel by William Bradford Huie; directed by Arthur Hiller; produced by Martin Ranshoff for Metro‐GoldwynMayer. That rare thing these days—a Hollywood comedy that says something serious —is achieved in this witty and racy account of a romance between an American naval officer who candidly practices cowardice and an English widow with a stiff upper lip i.n World War II. James Garner, Julie Andrews, James Coburn, Melvyn Douglas and Joyce Grenfell shine.

Marriage Italian Style, screenplay by Eduardo de Filippo, Renato Castellani, Antonio Guerra, Leo Benvenuto and Piero de Bernardi, based on the play, “Filomena Marturano,” by Mr. de Flippo; directed by Vittorio de Sica; produced by Carlo Ponti. An Embassy Pictures

Following a practice started last year, I would like to cite a list of films that are worthy of honorable mention. Several came very close to winning places in the top You may guess which of these they are:

The World of Henry Orient, a charming, poignant comedy about schoolgirls and an idolized pianist, with Peter Sellers, Tippy Walker and Merrie Spaeth, directed by George Roy Hill.

The Organizer (Italian), an exciting compassionate and humorous drama of the early labor movement in Italy, with Marcelio Mastroianni, directed by Mario Monicelli.

Los Tarantos (Spanish), a fiery, modern‐day gypsy counterpart of the “Romeo and Juliet” story, with Sara Lezana, Daniel Martin and Carmen Amaya, directed by Rovira‐Beleta.

Seduced and Abandoned (Italian), a colorful seriocomic drama of social, legal and domestic customs in Sicily, with Stefania Sandrelli and Aldo Puglisi, directed by Pietro Germi.

Nothing But the Best, a British satire on social and professional climbing, very agile and glib, with Alan Bates, Denholm Elliott and Millicent Martin, directed by Clive Donner.

Seance on a Wet Afternoon, an eerie and touching melodrama about two middleaged kidnappers, with Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough, directed by Bryan Forbes.

Cheyenne Autumn, a heroic western saga, directed in grand style by John Ford, with Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker and others.

The Finest Hours, a vivid and moving documentary of Winston Churchill's life, produced by Jack LeVien. That's the story on the best films. I will have more to say about performances and direction next week.

Meet the Beatles! Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance, John, Paul, George, and Ringo began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talent to the big screen. A Hard Day’s Night, in which the bandmates play wily, exuberant versions of themselves, captured the astonishing moment when they officially became the singular, irreverent idols of their generation and changed music forever.

All-Time (Domestic) Box-Office Hits and Top Films By Decade and Year:

Box-office earnings have often been a great predictor of the feature-length films that have been the most favorite, successful, and popular. However, they do not necessarily reflect the best (or greatest) films of the year or decade. They also provide a window into the era when the film was originally released. Although box-office records are often contradictory, spotty, unreliable and sometimes non-existent (the further you go back in cinematic history), it has been possible to compile listings of the top domestic hits all the way back to - both by decade (beginning with the silents and the s) and by individual year, up to the present year.

Rankings of the top US feature-length films by decade (based on unadjusted domestic gross revenue) are presented below. Also, rankings of the top films by year are included. In earlier days stretching from the s to the s, exact dollar grosses for films at the box-office were often tallied differently, and therefore remain somewhat unreliable. Examples of sources for this information include: The Numbers, Box-Office Mojo, IMDb, or IMDbPro (subscription), Stats-A-Mania, Wikipedia, Ultimate Movie Rankings, and a Business Insider article (examples of links available at present time). Discrepancies between each of these sources presented a challenge to select the top domestic-grossing film of each year. In most cases, the top-earning domestic film was the one with the most mentions as the highest-grossing film.

Note: Complications in determining accurate box-office totals include the fact that many films have had multiple releases (such as Disney animated feature films), re-issues or re-releases, special editions, director's cuts, and subsequent 3-D and IMAX releases - a situation that can have a significant impact on standings. For some films, there are two figures: domestic gross revenue and lifetime domestic gross revenue.
