The field of electrical engineering is built on the shoulders of giants, Tesla and Edison just to name a couple. Out of the advancements in technology, Electrical Engineering is all around us today. Almost everything we use in our daily lives is powered, has communication ability and has a chip in with many integrated circuits built using novel materials and fabrication technologies. A few of the important innovations that electrical engineers have produced include: innovative energy solutions to light our homes, and provide power for our devices; design, analyze and optimize wireless communication devices and networks that revolutionize the way we live; develop devices and instrumentation to save lives; use technology to produce advanced materials for solar cells and sensing devices; design the technology that enables customized entertainment; and advance new green technologies that will power our future. Electrical engineers can be found in almost all sectors of the workforce including research and development, product design, manufacturing operations, service, technical sales, marketing, consulting, education, law, and policy-making. Our program provides the scope of knowledge and training needed for employment and also forms the basis for further study at the graduate level. Combined with your MBA, you can act as a bridge between technical experts and senior management.

The Electrical Engineering BS program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The curriculum is designed to meet several educational objectives. These program education objectives (PEOs) are broad statements that describe the expected accomplishments of graduates within a few years after graduation. Specific PEOs for Electrical Engineering are:

  • PEO #1 (Successful Careers): Graduates of the program will successfully contribute to the profession while advancing in their careers.
  • PEO #2 (Life Long Learning): Graduates of the program will continue to learn through advanced study or engagement in professional development activities.

Learning Outcomes

The curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop the following knowledge, skills, and behaviors by the time of graduation:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

The MBA component of the curriculum is designed so that students will:

  • Develop knowledge and skills essential for effective management.
  • Be able to analyze complex information in order to make informed, ethical decisions with the consideration of various stakeholders.
  • Be effective team members, will develop essential communication skills, and will develop cultural competence for a global environment.

The Learning Environment

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers 11 engineering programs leading to the degree of bachelor of science (BS) degree: aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, engineering science, environmental, industrial, material science, and mechanical engineering.

Seven combined BS/MBA programs are offered in conjunction with the School of Management. BA, BS, and BS/MS degrees in computer science are offered through the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. BS/MS degrees are offered through the Departments of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. A BS degree in engineering physics is offered jointly with the Department of Physics. A BS degree in bioinformatics and computational biology is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly with the College of Arts and Sciences. Minors are offered in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Robotics, Human Factors and Ergonomics Engineering, Operations Research, and Quality Engineering. Additionally, a certificate is offered in Data Intensive Computing. The Department of Materials Design and Innovation (MDI) has the only joint-accelerated Chemistry BS/MDI MS program in the nation, which allows students to complete an undergraduate and graduate degree in less than five years.

The curricula allow students flexibility in their programs of study and encourages interaction between students and faculty. The undergraduate educational experience prepares students for professional practice and advanced study. Special programs including our experiential learning program, undergraduate research, and internship opportunities provide professional development skills and experiences and facilitate placement of our graduates in high-quality engineering positions.

About Our Facilities

The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences occupies six buildings on UB's north campus: Bell, Bonner, Davis, Furnas, Jarvis, and Ketter Hall.

Together, these buildings form an outstanding educational and research facility, comprising , square feet of laboratory and office space.

The Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) provides its students with a computing laboratory equipped with state of the art software, continuously maintained and upgraded teaching laboratories for electronic circuit design and analysis, as well as an embedded systems laboratory. The department is located in Davis Hall, which includes a 5, square foot, grade 1, cleanroom facility that enables research in nanotechnology with state-of-the-art equipment, which allows for photolithography, metal deposition and dry chemical etching.

While teaching and student advising are somewhat traditional activities of a professor, scientific research endeavors are particularly significant at a research university. Academic Advising

Students obtain academic advice and guidance from the academic advisors in the SEAS Office of Undergraduate Education ( Bonner Hall) and from faculty advisors in their program of study. The Office of Undergraduate Education advises all students throughout their first two years of study. In the junior and senior years, students seek advisement primarily from departmental faculty advisors.

Students are encouraged to consult with one of the directors of undergraduate studies for questions regarding the sequence of EE requirements, technical electives and career opportunities starting in the spring of their sophomore year.
