While some may not readily admit it, a little romance in your action anime can be a great addition. You root for the hero, and you also root for the hero to get the girl. It can be an integral part of the fantasy of it all. For some fans, a good action anime series with romance hits just right. It has all those interesting and high intensity fights, but it also takes breaks to develop characters and character relationships. If you are looking for anime series that have strong romance, but also have those interesting action scenes, we have anime recommendations for you.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of it, I feel it prudent to start with the very popular anime series that fit this criteria. I want to cover series that you might not be aware of, so first, let’s get the series you have likely watched already, and if you haven’t, you should go on and watch them first. Wildly popular action anime series with strong romance elements include:
- Sword Art Online
- Rurouni Kenshin
- Sailor Moon
- Full Metal Alchemist
It’s worth noting that all the big shounen series have an element of this, but don’t always do it so well or leave it as just hints ala Bleach, Fairy Tail, and D. Gray Man. Anyway, since all that is out of the way, here are some anime recommendations in this vein you might not have already seen.
Shakugan no Shana
Not one of those anime series to play coy with it, Shakugan no Shana makes its intentions towards romance obvious early. Certainly, Shana is cold towards Yuuji initially, but it is one of those series where you know what is going to happen. Sparks fly between the main characters as well as all around the fiery redhead as she cuts down shadowy threats to humanity.
While this series sets itself up with a pretty standard plot, it does wild things with it. You go on a journey with the characters and watch the vast world unfold before them. Furthermore, as they journey, you watch them grow closer together as a fighting team and as people.
Twin Star Exorcists
Nothing makes romance more obvious than a prophecy that their child will basically be the chosen one. With that knowledge, it becomes quite the treat to watch them go from indifferent strangers to true partners as they battle supernatural threats of every size and shape.
Visions of Escaflowne
An old series these days, but for those that have seen it, one that sticks in their memories forever. Escaflowne has that old school dedication to romance more akin to Inuyasha where it definitely plays a larger part in the plot. However, it does take place in a kingdom at war, so there are plenty of battles to overcome.
Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic is a classic of this genre. You have your cool, slightly lazy main character and the tsundere girl that you just know will later fall in love with him. While you are waiting for that nut to crack, there are plenty of battles to overcome. One interesting bit is that the main character started off as a soldier, so him transitioning to a school kid in order to guard Chidori is still an interesting twist.
Yona of the Dawn
Admittedly, Yona of the Dawn is on the lower end of the action scale. It might be more apt to call it an adventure anime since Yona, as the main character, does very little fighting. That is more left to her bodyguard and the other guardians she gathers along the way. However, a large part of the plot in the show is the relationships of love and friendship that Yona builds.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
With its title, this series gives you a bit of the wrong idea. The show has a little ecchi, and the romance is actually pretty sparse in the first season. It is something that grows in the subsequent seasons. The first season really establishes the world and the core characters while still giving you a little taste of the relationships to come. All the while, the scope of the battles is also growing as well.
Kekkaishi is a series with a familiar plot about fighting demons. Two childhood friends team up together, despite being from different clans, and help stop attacks. You know where the romance comes in. As a bit of an older series, it’s been a bit forgotten because it never had any big hooks, but it is still a great watch.
Beyond the Boundary
Beyond the Boundary, as far as I’m concerned, is the whole package. It has beautiful animation that leads to absolutely enthralling epic battles and it has extremely likable characters that makes every relationship a treat. The downside is that it isn’t longer, to be honest. It ended and I wanted more.
Kaze no Stigma
Kaze no Stigma, being about elemental powers, has a lot of flash in the battles and a little sizzle on the relationship. While it is never firmly established, you watch Ayano develop a classic tsundere relationship towards Kazuma after she realizes that he is not the killer that others suspect him to be. What’s more, they make it nice and easy to overlook the dubious familial relationship between them. They’re second cousins, which may still be too close for some.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight
This school-based ecchi has a familiar tale to it. The lowest ranking guy ends up tied to the highest ranking girl because his low battle abilities have an unexpected twist. It ends up as a bit of a harem, but like most harems, the best girl is pretty obvious.
Record of Grancrest War
What is great about Grancrest War is the scope of it. You not only see the relationship of the main characters, but the world as well. Over the course of it, heroes and villains both rise and fall, relationships with side characters form, and the world really feels like it is living and warring. It makes for a complex, but easily entered series with good romantic payoff.
Dragonaut The Resonance
While the dragons in the series are intriguing, the animation of them fumbles a bit. Interestingly enough, the romance in this series is actually the most intriguing part of it. It is nice to watch the mystery unfold, but better to watch a shy girl open herself up to the normal main character that just got pulled into the whole mess.
Date a Live
Date a Live is what we call a high stakes romance where the main character must make powerful girls that end up on Earth fall in love with him. Of course, these girls rarely just want to chat it out. Often the wooing comes with a fight. It is a weird premise, yes, but it is followed through in the best possible way.
Aria of the Scarlet Ammo
If gun-slinging action is more your speed, then Aria is exactly for you. Bullets fly in plenty as they try to track down a killer at a crime fighter academy. Of course, the romance comes is your classic tsundere package, but it is still just as nice watching them warm up to each other.
The Sacred Blacksmith
This is a tale of a girl looking for a blacksmith to fix her weapon. She finds him, but also gets pulled into a huge adventure in the process. The Scared Blacksmith is one of those plots that is too complex to explain without being long-winded, and honestly sometimes too complex. However, if you want action, plot that requires constant attention to understand fully, and lovable crew of characters, this is a bit of a gem for it.
As a survival game anime, Btooom is vicious, but amidst the gore and constant threat of death, love is easy to blossom. The series does a good job at developing feelings between the two main characters without making it sudden and overly obvious. The action itself can also be quite strategic as well.
Strike the Blood
While this is a series about vampires, there’s no sparkle on their skin. The main character may in fact be a powerful vampire and is given a sword shaman to kill him if he awakens too much power. They end up defending the city, bonding together, and as you can guess, growing even closer than that. Unfortunately there is some ecchi and harem there as well.
In this world, certain people can manifest weapons from their soul. They are then tasked to partner with another at school in hopes to awaken an absolute duo power. The twist comes when the main character awakens not a weapon, but a shield. From there, you watch him find his partner, and of course they develop feelings.
Guilty Crown is a quickly formed romance that burns bright in a plot full of chaos and death. While the series fumbles with a few elements, no one can say that it wasn’t interesting. It also has a romance that is one you are sure to remember.

Beside the dorms is the main school building where classes take place, which also houses the cafeteria on the ground floor. The school is four stories and the roof is normally restricted from access. Beyond the main school building is the large schoolyard, with the pool area adjacent to the yard. On the other side of the field is the baseball field, with the gymnasium and tennis court beyond it, which are closer to the main school building.
Childhood and adolescence are two important themes in Little Busters! The opening video of the visual novel starts with two lines written in English: "What 'Adolescence' do you have?" and "Do you remember 'Childhood'?". Riki Naoe, the male protagonist, has four childhood friends with whom he grew up together through adolescence and still hangs out with when the story begins. Thus, friendship is another theme presented in the form of Riki's relationships with his friends in high school, and is thought to be irreplaceable. Ecstasy: "This will remind you that you have to recollect 'Adolescence'."

45 Best Romance Comedy Anime That You Should Watch
25+ Best Action Romance Anime
26. Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online has become a favorite for many anime lovers recently. Also, with engaging battles that feature the best of swordplay and RPG gaming, SAO is one of the best action anime in recent years. However, there is more to this anime than extraordinary battles.
The developing relationship of the main character, Kirito, and the female lead, Asuna, is one of the story’s strongest points. From the instant connection, they felt during their first boss battle to the final scene in the first arc that involved the two holding hands as the world was ending, the story of Kirito and Asuna is one that is indeed very hard to forget.
Thus it grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.
BTOOOM! It seems to be one of the last titles one would think of when considering romance. However, within the plot of the anime lies a well-developed romantic story, with the tale of Ryouta and Himiko unfolding before viewers’ eyes in a manner that is both engaging and satisfying.
Though the anime is extremely gritty and violent and features disturbing adult themes, the love story between the male and female serves as the series silver lining. Indeed, it is a very testament to the fact that even in the darkest of times, love can make one’s life that much more worth it.
24. Tenkuu no Escaflowne
Though this anime aired almost twenty years ago, it is one that has aged pretty well. Indeed, the story of assertive female lead Hitomi and the handsome, headstrong prince Van, and of course, the dashing, chivalrous Allen, is one of anime’s best three-way love stories ever written.
What makes the action sequences excellent in this anime is the realism involved in the fights, especially in those featuring the anime’s mechas, the towering Guymelefs. The romance, however, is something entirely on a different level, as the budding relationship between Hitomi and Prince Van is something that is exceptionally well-portrayed. Also, with intense battle sequences and a romantic story that is both refreshing and realistic, Tenkuu no Escaflowne is one anime that deserves a spot in this list. It snatches a place in our action romance anime list.
Of course, in anime, there is one anime that features action and romance to a pretty extended degree, the epic story of InuYasha. Running for a full four years, the tale of Kagome and InuYasha has become one of anime’s most notable love stories. Also, featuring themes that include reincarnation, sorrow, and the haunting of past sins, InuYasha is one anime for those who love seeing awesome action and a great love story onscreen.
Though the story is quite long and extremely expansive, the core romance in the plot is one that will always stand as one of anime’s best love stories. The titular character struggles with feelings for the woman he has loved in the past, to the reincarnation of the very same person he is currently falling in love within the present. Also, of course, the anime is responsible for a lot of nail-biting suspense when it comes to its action scenes; enemies get stronger, and characters face increasingly tricky situations throughout the story. Thus it features in our action romance anime list.
22. Macross Frontier
Following in the footsteps of its source material, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, which is the definitive example of space opera anime decades ago, Macross Frontier is widely considered as one of the best spin-off sequels in anime.
One of the strongest suits of the anime is the development of the three central characters, who are said to be on par with the original series’ famous love triangle. As the male lead, Also, is faced with the prospect of love from two similar yet different women, viewers experience a roller-coaster ride of emotions. One thing that is particularly engaging about the anime’s love story is the fact that among the three involved in the triangle, none is unlikeable, as both girls have strong qualities that make them right for the male lead. Everything comes into a perfect close, however, as the anime’s ending is both concrete and abstract at the same time.
21. Angel Beats!
Angel Beats! is widely considered as one of the best titles in recent years, and for a good reason too. It is featuring impressive battle scenes that spare no expense in the production department, and a surprising love story that quite literally slaps the tears out of viewers’ eyes, Angel Beats! The anime has become one of Key VisualArts’ most notable works.
The series is yet one reason why people love Key VisualArts’ works, as the story of Otonashi and the mysterious Kanade unfolds throughout the anime’s relatively short run. What makes Angel Beats! Such a notable action/romance anime is the fact that it was able to produce such a beautiful love story in the anime’s final episodes. They were ultimately culminating in the last episode’s final scenes, which many consider as one of the most heartfelt and touching moments in anime.
Overall, Angel Beats! is like an anime that lets you in on the action, then sucker punches you with a romantic twist, essentially making the anime impossible to forget. It grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.
20. Akatsuki no Yona
A relatively new anime, Akatsuki no Yona garnered a lot of praise when it was released. This was partly due to the anime’s great character development, especially on the titular heroine, Princess Yona, who was forced into exile after the brutal murder of her father in the hands of the man she considers her one true love. Faced with hurdles that are far beyond what she trained for, Yona nonetheless tries to reclaim a kingdom that was rightfully hers.
Though the action sequences of Akatsuki no Yona are a beauty to behold, the budding romance between Yona and her protector, Hak, is something that has gained a lot of praise from anime fans all over the world. What makes the anime’s romantic theme, so endearing is the fact that it manages to pull off scenes that are subtle and passionate at the same time, without resorting to any fanservice of any sort. Truly one of the best action romance anime of recent years. Akatsuki no Yona grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.
19. Rurouni Kenshin
Of course, one can never think action/romance anime without mentioning the magnum opus of romantic action anime, the tale of the wandering swordsman in the Meiji Era, Rurouni Kenshin.
The flash of clashing swords is not all that this anime is about, however. After all, it is a tale of a man’s journey to redemption, as signified by the main character’s reverse-edged sword. Thus, the epic love story between the humble Kenshin, a man, making amends for his dark past, and the young Kaoru, a woman who is willing to give a vagabond a chance at a fresh start, is one that is sure to entrance viewers for a long time to come.
This is most evident in the gradual but inevitable progression of feelings between the two main leads. Rurouni Kenshin is an anime that manages to show the sincerest love of two characters without them even holding hands. The end of the first season is proof of this, as viewers experience one of the warmest and most endearing scenes in anime, just by showing Kenshin embracing Kaoru. Love is subtle and sweet, and this anime is proof of that.
18. Mirai Nikki
Love is an act of insanity in itself. With this in mind, there is no other anime that can stay true to this adage than Mirai Nikki. Yes, the anime is pretty crazy when it comes to its violence (it does, after all, feature anime’s most beloved yandere), and the action sequences can be pretty gut-wrenching, but within the anime’s plot is a pretty sweet love story. Strange? Let me explain.
On the surface, Yuki and Yuno’s story seem to be a cliched tale of a crazy girl going after the cowardly guy. However, as the plot moves forward, you as the viewer will see the depth of their love for each other. As their relationship comes to fruition, Yuki depends on Yuno because she completes him, and Yuno depends on Yuki because he is her one source of happiness. Yes, they do things that are far and beyond insane. But at the core of it all lies their sincere affection for each other. For this, Mirai Nikki makes our action romance anime list.
17. Romeo x Juliet
Based on one of the greatest love stories of all time, the anime adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet takes liberties with the story, but it still retains the heart of the plot. Featuring the timeless tale of Romeo Montague and the woman of his dreams, this anime is one of the most memorable anime version of a classic love story.
A lot of critics have even noted that due to the liberties taken by the anime, the story became better-rounded, as the development of Romeo and Juliet’s love story grew. In contrast to the Renaissance play, where the young lovers fell in love at first sight and ultimately kill each other several days later, the anime incarnations of the characters deal with events that are far beyond their lives alone. Juliet’s sacrifice, for one, and Romeo’s subsequent sacrifice is something that has impressed anime viewers, old and young alike. It deserves a place in our action romance anime list.
Set in Edo Japan, this anime tells the story of 16-year-old Chizuru Yukimura as she sets out to find her father, who has gone missing in Kyoto. The long journey is already dangerous enough for a girl her age, but matters get worse once she reaches the capital. There, Chizuru is attacked by human-like monsters and taken hostage by the fierce samurai group called Shinsengumi. Life as Chizuru knew it is about to change.
Hakuouki is a definite must-watch for all fans of historical dramas. While Chizuru’s story is a work of fiction, the background information given throughout the show is historically accurate. Even if the idea of a history lesson in anime form bores you, the romance and action components of Hakuouki are more than enough to make this show entertaining. If your idea of action involves samurai, epic sword fights, and old-school virtues, then Hakuouki is the show for you.
15. Hiiro no Kakera: The Tamayori Princess Saga
High school girl Tamaki Kasuga leads a normal life until she goes to live with her grandmother in a remote village. As soon as she arrives there, mythical beings start attacking Tamaki, and she has to rely on a group of mysterious guys to protect her. As it turns out, Tamaki was born into a family of powerful women. Now, everyone expects her to carry on the roles of the Tamayori Princess, together with her male guardians. Can she fulfill her destiny?
The dynamics between Tamaki and her (of course) good-looking guardian’s promise a lot of drama and romance. The action aspect of Hiiro no Kakera, too, doesn’t have to hide and is uniquely entertaining for all fans of fantastic and supernatural stories. The mythical Tamayori Princess grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.
14. Vampire Knight
Cross Academy looks like a typical elite boarding school at first glance, but it hides a dark secret; The students of Cross Academy are divided into Day Class and Night Class. Also, only a few individuals know that the students of Night Class are, in fact, powerful vampires. Yuuki and Zero are two of the few students aware of their identities, and it’s up to them to protect their secrets. But nothing has prepared them for the dangers heading towards Cross Academy.
Think of vampires what you want, but you have to admit that Vampire Knight is a highly popular show that many people still enjoy to this day. The action in this little gem is solid and keeps you guessing of what might happen next. More importantly, the romance of Vampire Knight does not disappoint. The love triangle between Yuki, Zero, and Kaname adds a nice touch to the storyline and makes you wonder how Yuki will decide in the end. Watch Vampire Knight if you want to find out!
13. Shakugan no Shana
What would you do if you found out that the universe you’ve known is not the only one out there? Yuuji Sakai has to find an answer to this question. This is because he not only has to accept those dangerous beings emerging from a parallel universe but also that he is now a “Torch.” Also, the only thing he can do now is waiting for his entire existence to end.
Shakugan no Shana is a definite recommendation if you are not looking for a romance between a man and a side character, but rather one between two main characters. Yuuji and Shana are connected by fate and slowly get closer to each other as the story unfolds. Also, the action of Shakugan no Shana offers a lot of supernatural and fantastic elements. So check it out if that’s what you are looking for in a good show. It grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.
Saya Otonashi grew up believing she was a normal girl, except for her inability to remember any events of her life up to one year ago. However, the peaceful life she knew soon comes to an end when blood-thirsty monsters show up in her city. And she fights them with powers she didn’t know she possessed. Soon Saya has to learn the truth about her existence and who she has to become to protect the ones she loves.
Blood+ is a definite must-watch for all fans of good action and bloody battle scenes. On top of that, you can also enjoy drama, horror elements, and a strong heroine; A heroine who defies the stereotype that all female anime characters need saving. The romance in this anime is subtle, yet harmonizes perfectly with the rest of the show. Fifty episodes are more than enough to last you for a while, so check out Blood+ if you haven’t already.
11. Kaze no Stigma
Yagami Kazuma was born into a powerful family of fire magic users who disown him due to his weak magical abilities. Who would have thought that he would reappear years later as a powerful user of the wind arts? Not his family members who are still not ready to accept Kazuma with open arms. Together with tough girl Ayano, he ends up in a war between two opposing families.
Here we have another show that highlights the relationship between two main characters. Both of them are powerful, strong-willed, and rough around the edges, so you can expect a lot of unexpected twists and turns with this show. As you’ve probably already guessed from the synopsis, Kaze no Stigma offers more than enough action and is uniquely entertaining for all fans of magic and fantasy. Kaze no Stigma seems to never get out of age. It deserves a spot in our action romance anime list.
Sixteen-year-old Kusanagi Godou wants to perform a good deed by returning a stone tablet. His grandfather had found it in Italy and brought it back to Japan. On Godou’s trip, he gets caught up in a fight between a god and a beautiful young knight. Her name is Erica Blandelli. Also, he quickly finds himself in combat. On a more surprising note, he can kill the rogue god. Also, he becomes a god-slayer or Campione!
A Campione! has excellent strength and durability that allows him to gather special powers he can use to defeat rogue gods. The key to accessing power is knowledge. If he understands the history of a god, he can defeat it. Goudo, not being an expert on mythology, needs a little help now and then. And that is where his growing harem comes into play.
If Goudo lacks in knowledge, Erica, or any other girl, can transfer important information. They can do so with a deep–oh-la-la–French kiss. Erica says the kiss transfer is faster than a verbal explanation. The kissing trick works with other capable fighters and mystics that join him. They join him to fight the other rogue gods, other Campione!. Also, they join him to fight an oncoming, potentially Earth-ending attack by one of the oldest gods in myth.
You can tell from the preceding description that this show has a lot of action. It has the right amount of romance, too. If you like a myth, action, love, and an aggressive female lead that kisses the boy, this is the anime for you. It earns a spot in our action romance anime.
09. Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon?
Orario is a city set in a fantasy world where many of the gods, bored with life in heaven, descended to earth and created families of humans. The town they chose sits over a labyrinth of caves that spawn monsters. The massive subterranean network is called the dungeon. When killed, the monsters leave behind magical stones and occasionally drop items, like in a modern dungeon-crawling video game. The gods send their families of adventurers into the caverns to kill the monsters and collect the items that are the heartbeat of the Orario economy.
The story focuses on adventurer Bell and his impoverished Goddess Hestia (Greek Goddess of the Hearth). Bell toils each day, killing monsters as Hestia works part-time to help them make their way in this harsh world. The story has several arcs focusing on Bell and the challenges he faces in the dungeon and an epic battle deep in the labyrinth.
The romance is between Bell and the women he worships, Ais the beautiful sword princess from a rival family that helps him train, and Hestia, the goddess he worships. Hestia loves her followers and wants him to succeed as any parent would have their child. She also has the hots for Bell and is extremely jealous when any other girl or woman pays any attention to him. We think Ais likes Bell but keeps her emotions close to her chest.
The story is a classic adventure. It has an underdog hero and a girl (or two or three or four) that support him in the best way each of them can. We love watching their relationship and hope you will, too. Therefore, it grabs a place in our action romance anime.
08. Aria of the Scarlet Ammo
The future has more crime than today, and in response to that, the government of Japan has decided to create a high school to start training future crime fighters. Tokyo Butei High is the home of these young law enforcement officers. The student officers go by the name Butei, and one of the officers is Kinji Tooyama, of the Logistics School. He hopes to live out his days quietly with planning and management classes because he doesn’t want to do any tiresome chasing of bad guys.
The calm and quiet life ends when Butei Killer targets him. The prodigy detective Aria Holmes Kanzaki ends up saving him. The scarlet-haired twin-tailed and twin gunned dirty Harriet can tell he’s hiding something and demands that if she is going to protect him, he has to become her partner.
Aria the Scarlet Ammo has plenty of gun-wielding badassery and impossible shots as the two chases down the villains and uncovers the truth about the Butei Killer. The romance comes in Aria and Kinji’s relationship as it grows in a classic first-comes-hate, then-comes-love as often happens with action stories. We get a look at their emotional baggage and reasons for the two to find comfort in each other’s arms, which is enough to find a place on this action romance anime list.
07. Date A Live

It is the most significantly smaller over the next 30 years. Shidou and his younger sister Kotori live in an Asian metropolis. This place sees frequent space quakes. A quake alert sends him running across town out of concern for his sister. And that is how miserable Shidou’s life goes off the rails.
In his panicked search for his sister, Shidou comes across a young woman standing at the center of a crater. The confused girl under attack by the SSF seemed to be easily holding her own. But Shidou comes to her aid. He eventually corners her in a school building, talks her down from her violent rampage. Also, he gives her a name: Tooka.
Shortly after the incident, Shidou moves to an airship. Here he learns that the emotional instabilities in spirits that find themselves in our dimension are causing space quakes. To complicate the mater, the spirits are always young women. He also finds out that the team on the airship competes with the SSF. The strike force handles the spirits by killing them. The airship team wants to make them emotionally stable by having them fall in love with Shidou. We then watch Shidou date and live with a whole harem of teenage girls. He is trying to keep each of them happy and emotionally stable.
Date A Live is a fun adventure that involves high-stakes romance. It is deserving of a spot on our action romance anime list.
06. Macross Delta
A mysterious plague known as the Var Syndrome is spreading across the Brísingr Globular Cluster. It is a distant section of the Milky Way Galaxy. The disease lies dormant in much of the population. But once it is triggered, it can turn the masses into a violent, murderous mob. The discovery that music sung by people with a particular trait can calm and even inoculate people from the infection leads to the creation of two groups; Walkure, a singing group, and Delta Platoon, an aerial combat squad. The aerial combat squad performs airshows during their concerts. Also, they protect the singers with lethal force when called upon. The globular cluster is thrown into further chaos by the planet of Windmere declaring war. With their elite Aerial Knights, they quickly gain control of much of the cluster.
We watch battle after battle in the space and the skies of the various planets. All of these sequences are set to some fantastic music, easily filling out the action requirement of this list. The main action revolves around the relationship between Hayate and Freyja. Also, the anime gives the other relationships their moments in the sun along the way. It deserves a spot on our action romance anime list.
05. Blast of Tempest
Yoshino Takigawa has made a fatal friendship mistake: he’s secretly dating Aika, the younger sister of his best friend, Mahiro. Aika becomes the victim of a mysterious murder and the two boys go their separate ways as they deal with their grief. Mahiro becomes obsessed with finding the culprit to make him pay for his crime. Yoshino does his best to move on. A girl Yoshino doesn’t know contacts him and charges him with saving her life. From this point, Yoshino’s life will spin up and swallow up in a mystery that will bring him full circle.
The blast of Tempest is full of drama, and when you’re dealing with teens, the drama usually derives from romantic entanglements. The story also has a mystery and supernatural element that play heavily in its favor. The story is filled with action and romance and broken hearts and broken people, giving it a solid spot on our action romance anime list.
04. Dragonaut The Resonance
An asteroid is on a collision course for Earth. The world has known about this potential planet killer for 20 years and spent that time preparing. The creation of the Solar System Development Agency (ISDA) has a sole purpose, to quote Pacific Rim; “… cancel the apocalypse.” The agency thinks it has finally found its solution when they discover a dragon egg on the ocean floor. The agency’s relative calm of having everything in hand shatters when a new threat appears; dragon-like creatures that also seem to want to destroy the Earth.
The protagonist of the series is Jin Kamishina. He witnesses an attack by one of the rogue dragons. Also, he is nearly killed before a girl by the name of Toa saves him before he might have plunged to his death. Jin, after his rescue, is partnered with his savior and is quickly pulled into the top-secret program to stop these rogue dragons. Also, he becomes a Dragonaut, a pilot of dragons.
We watch a relationship between a loner and a girl with a mysterious past gradually develop. Also, they learn to trust each other to save the world. The gradual building of the relationship is one of the best parts of this series. You don’t get everything all at once or a big reason behind the school confession. The partners grow together and fall in love, which is one of the most romantic ways a relationship can happen. This deserves a spot in our action romance anime list.
03. The Ambition of Oda Nobuna
Oda Nobuna may be one of the most frequently visited historical figures in Japanese history. The 16th-century warlord appears in countless anime and dramas. The Ambition of Oda Nobuguna is a Rule 63 version of those adventures. Rule 63 states that for every character, there is also the same character of the opposite gender.
So, in this version of the story, Nobuguna and all his lieutenants are female. Also, the story focuses on a 17-year-old student named Sagara Yoshiharu, who time travels to the Sengoku period and becomes a member of the Nobuguna court. This time, the warlord is a beautiful teenaged girl who is smart, brave in battle, and wants nothing more than to unite Japan under one ruler. The two of them have an excellent rom-com relationship as they learn to like, trust, and love each other. We watch Sagara with his knowledge of the future to help Nobuguna gain the military advantage. Also, they might change history.
The Ambition of Oda Nobuguna could be more accurately described as a harem anime if it wasn’t for one thing; Sagara’s undying love and devotion to Nobuguna. The other girls are just eye candy for the viewer. This snatches a spot in out action romance anime list.
02. Record of Grancrest War
Chaos rules the continent of Atlanta. Chaos is a magical force that twists the laws of nature, causing demons, monsters, and spirits to appear. The nobility has the duty and power to defeat the chaos through power known as crests. You become a lord through gaining a crest by defeating a lord, having someone give it to you, or if you’re strong enough, you can overcome a Chaos demon and seize its core. The route of defeating a demon is often the way a self-made lord comes into being. The lords are not always noble, and one by one, they quickly decide to abandon the purpose of the crests, defeating the chaos, and begin waging war upon each other, trying to steal each other’s crests to gain dominion over one another.
The series has adventure and epic large-scale battles on land and sea. We see several heroes fall and villains rise through the course of the show, making you worry that one of the two won’t make it to the end. The best part is you get a feeling that the two are indeed in love. You don’t even need to wait until the end of the first season for them to kiss. You also get to see an epic side romance between the leaders of the two largest warring factions. If you want an anime with love and action on a Game of Thrones scale, this is one you should be watching. It grabs the second place in our action romance anime list.
01. Chivalry of a Failed Knight
What if you could weaponize the power of your soul? What would you do with that power, and what would you fight for? Honor? Love? To change the world? Ikki Kurogane is on a quest to become one of the esteemed Mage-Knights of the world. On a scale that ranks them in terms of power from A, very powerful, to F, almost no power, he, unfortunately, ranks F. Yet, he will hone the skills he has to prove it’s not the magical power that makes a mighty magic Knight.
You could describe Chivalry of a Failed Knight as an action-rom-com. Ikki, upon entering his room at the beginning of the new semester, stumbles upon a partially dressed Stella Vermillion. Stella is an A-ranked student and an actual princess. She feels the need to uphold her honor, so she challenges him. The duel is fierce, but he wins, and as per their agreement, the loser becomes the other’s slave. The roommates seem to fall for each other quickly. The two also become partners in the arena, a national competition between student knights.
We watch the couple face off against stiff competition again and again in typical overpowered battle anime style. The romance feels honest and sincere. You have a princess and her knight, working together to overcome all the odds stacked against them. A couple that occasionally acts affectionately toward each other, going to the extreme of holding hands in private. The show is funny and fast-paced, and we highly recommend it. It grabs a spot in our action romance anime list.

The Five Best Romance Anime of 2016
Cheeky Kid has been watching anime and reading manga for as long as he can remember. Doing so takes him to different worlds.
How good was 2016 in presenting heart-tugging romance anime?
It was marvelous, but certainly not the best year!
Each year is a wonderful year for the romance genre in anime. I have noticed that there is never a shortage of romantic titles. The only struggle is learning how to uncover and discover them all. That is not an ovewhelming issue, however, when clearly—love is all around us!
Listed here are five anime titles that shone bright with the warm light of love in 2016. Personally, I love them all. But, your opinions are your own, and entirely a different matter. I am just here to share some love. If you know better anime titles in the said genre, then feel free to share the love in the comments.
|The 5 Best Romance Anime of 2016|
1. 12-sai.: Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki
2. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair) [Season 2]
3. Honobono Log
5. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (Kiss Him, Not Me!)
1. 12-sai.: Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki
First love—oh what a whimsical and magical thing to experience at age 12! This age is, after all, the age that marks the beginning of the transition from childhood to adulthood. All sorts of feelings suddenly blossom from out of nowhere. Perplexities arise and complications are born. What is this confusing stage of life? What is this thing called love?
12-sai: Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki tells the story of school children who are on their way to traverse the path to maturity. Little do they know, the path is laden what obstacles. Love is both a simple and a complex thing. It is relative, but no one truly knows its actual form. There is only one sure way to invoke an answer, and that is—to fall in love and experience it whole!
As the focus of this anime is on young love, it is not surprising why it is jam-packed with cuteness and adorableness. There is absolutely no way of stopping it from making hearts flutter. It delivers butterflies to tummies and warms up cheeks until they are red. There is no denying it; this show is a special find. 12-sai: Chicchana Mune no Tokimeki is a pure and innocent romance anime that depicts young love in all its ticklish and charming nuances.
2. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair) [Season 2]
Akagami no Shirayuki-hime is the kind of story that pops up in the dreams of many young girls who see themselves as princesses. It is dreamy as it is rhapsodic! This anime plays out like a fairy tale with a happy ending. It is sweet, romantic, enchanting, and heartwarming! Mind you, it is even better than its first season!
Life is as usual in the kingdom of Clarines. But everyday is still a new adventure for the romantic escapades of Zen and Shirayuki. Both of them are living their lives to the fullest, but the slings and arrows of fate are as restless as ever! Will their love withstand the test of time and hold on until the end?
As I have already said, this season of Akagami no Shirayuki-hime is certainly better than the first. I did not expect it to be much different from before, because it was already perfect. But then, it surprised me with a rain-shower of sweet and heartfelt moments. Its wholesome, fairy tale approach was truly a delight to watch.
3. Honobono Log
If there is a romance anime that truly deserves the description “Short and Sweet,” Honobono Log takes the crown. Each of its episodes play for about a minute or so, but that is more than enough to spread the love. This show is neither extravagant nor complex. As a matter of fact, it is simple and straightforward. It is made up of little slices of life where love is the highlight. If I must say, this anime is well-worth every second of it.
Honobono Log is representative of what love looks like in real life. It visuals, as well as its animation, are at their simplest forms, yet it effectively gets the point across. Love is everywhere! From familial love, to friendly love, to relational love—no place on Earth is devoid of feelings from the heart. This anime made me appreciate every little moment of love and consider them as the little wonders of life.
Just like a letter coursing through the streams of time, Orange took me on an adventure where the past, present, and future intermingles with one another to deliver a full, immersive experience where passion is at the center.
Orange is not an ordinary show of ardor. Although it exhibits a bit of genericism, its whole essence wasn’t created arbitrarily. There’s romance, and there’s drama. It mirrors real life, but has a touch of the supernatural. Time travel is one of its themes; yet, it was added as a spice rather than a main ingredient. This anime never tries to be brassy. Its goal is to present a lifelike story that hits very close to home.
I thoroughly adored Orange. All the feelings of its characters flowed into me. The story was brilliantly emotional. The romance aspect wasn’t cheesy at all. Witnessing everything unfold made me feel like I was part of it. The way this show handles sentiency and sensitivity made fall in love with it.
5. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (Kiss Him, Not Me!)
Out of all the titles listed here, this might be an outlier. Nonetheless, I feel that it deserves to be here. While its focus is not purely on romance, it is leaning on that side. Watashi ga Motete Dousunda may be considered a romantic-comedy reverse harem anime, but it glimmers enough to be considered one of the best romance anime of 2016.
The main character, Kae Serinuma, is a legitimate fujoshi! She is maniacally into “boy’s love” and the like. In fact, despite losing some weight and becoming more attractive to the boys in her school, her fujoshi tendencies intensifies even more! She entertains her suitors, not as potential romantic partners, but as pawns to her own fujoshi fantasy. Still, her suitors cares deeply about her. Their love for her is real.
Watashi ga Motete Dousunda may be a show that is sneered upon by many because of what it is essentially (*cough* reverse harem), but it is never a good thing to be colored by prejudice. This is actually a show that is capable of eliciting chuckles and laughs with its gleeful comedy, and tickling the heart with its fanciful romance.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan (Rurouni Kenshin)
MAL Rated 8.43, Ranked #140 | Aired: Winter 1996 | Produced by Studio Gallop and Studio Deen
The cool thing about action romance anime is that it often encompasses a variety of other genres. Rurouni Kenshin ups the ante with its samurai characters and setting. The showdowns between Kenshin and the various villains he encounters are so intense - they almost feel like boss fights in a video game!
But when the action simmers down, we witness the stirring and touching interactions between Kenshin and Kaoru. Have a box of tissues handy, as this series can be a tear-jerker at times.

Anime series that combine mecha and fantasy themes usually fall under the shonen or seinen genres. The Vision of Escaflowne breaks the mold, and is instead a shoujo series with plenty of romance to keep the fairer sex happy.

MAL Rated 8.04, Ranked #480 | Aired: Spring 2013 | Produced by White Fox
Some action romance anime are sentimental, while others are heart-wrenching tales which will keep you teary-eyed. The Devil is Part-Timer will probably have you rolling on the floor from all the laughter. Yes, it's that funny! And what makes it so amusing is that the devil here isn't that stereotypical evil and red fellow pastors have been warning us about from their pulpits.
Sadao Maou defies our preconceived ideas about the infernal one. He works at a burger joint, but when push comes to shove then he's there for the ladies!
