20 Ways to Identify Job Scams on Craigslist

Poor job hunters! The stress of trying to find a job in this poor economy that matches our skills and salary requirements is hard enough. But unsuspecting job hunters now have another battle to contend with - JOB SCAMS and FAKE JOB OFFERS! No - they may not all be looking to rob us of our money but they are certainly robbing us of one commodity that can't be replaced - TIME!

Scam job offers are all over the Internet as creative web scammers are finding a way into our lives. Craig's List scammers are especially prevalent because the job posts and listings are free. You probably get the money scam spam emails that say "Make Money on Craig's List"! Well the money they are making is most likely at our expense. Millions of people every day are searching job posts online trying to find the perfect job. Everyone would, ideally, like to work at home and make lots of money or work for a company that allows telecommuting. Interestingly, these perfect job offers are all over Craig's List!

If you go on Craig's List looking for a job - be forwarned! There are many posts that aren't jobs at all - simply evil ways for people to make affiliate money, to get you to sign up for their service or a money scam that gets you to accept fake bank deposits. The fake job posts are everywhere, in every city, for all job types - especially looming in the part-time job category. Craig's List is a free post system so it is a big attraction to scam artists from across the country. I tested a few of the postings to see if they were legitimate. To my dismay - very few were real job listings. It is a shame because the few real job post ads have to be entaggled with all of the bogus crap jobs.

20 Signs That a Job Post Could Be One of the Craigslist Job Scams

  1. It has a generic, over-used or vague job title. Admin Assistant or Customer Service Rep are popular ones.
  2. The jobs that indicate that "Telecommuting is Ok". This attracts many people and gives them more responses.
  3. They fail to list a specific location for the job - i.e. they list no location under the city or area that you are searching.
  4. They list a salary or hourly wage that seems too good to be true or too specific like $13.64 - 34.23 / hour. What the...?
  5. They list it as a government job.
  6. They post a job with a title that doesn't match the description.
  7. They use strange sentences or misspellings.
  8. A search for that job title in Google - example "Admin Assistant Craig's List" and comes up in many other cities with the exact same job post. Because Craig's List is free - they can easily post the same bogus job post in every city.
  9. If the description has a bunch of exclamation points and promises high income in one week.
  10. If the description boldly states "No Experience Necessary" but has a promise of high pay.
  11. There is no job contact information. A quality job post will tell you who to email or give you a valid company website.
  12. A link that is to a home business or multi level marketing opportunity website. This isn't a JOB - but a business venture. If you were looking for a home business opportunity you would have searched that category.
  13. A link that redirects you to another site.
  14. A link that takes you to a job membership site and asks you to register.
  15. A quick response to your email inquiry that tells you they have reviewed your resume when you didn't even send it.
  16. A quick response to your email inquiry that leads you to another website that promises you more job openings - like government jobs. Click after click - nothing but a time waster...
  17. A response to your email inquiry that asks you to sign up for a web-conferencing service so you can be part of a training call.
  18. A response to your email inquiry with a name and company that does not exist.
  19. A response to your email inquiry from someone in a foreign country looking to hire people in the United States to handle accounts payable or receivables.
  20. The same auto response to all of your emails. There isn't a real person at the other end of the email account.

Tips on How to Avoid Being Scammed by one of the Fake Job Offers

If you suspect that a job post is bogus - follow some of these guidelines to avoid spending much of your precious time and energy.

  1. Send a generic inquiry first. Do not send your resume right away. Do not waste your time on a cover letter and reformatting your resume for a scam. Tell them you are interested in the job but would like to know more about the company and the location. Be sure to ask who you should direct the resume to.
  2. Search for that job title in Google - example "Admin Assistant Craig's List" and see if it comes up in other cities with the exact same job post.
  3. If they reply to your email. Check the name, company and website. Always check to make sure the company is a real company before you continue to waste time pursuing the job offer. Do a Google search on the company name or contact name to see if they exist or if there are any complaints written by others about this job offer.
  4. Check the website address they give you. Does the website seem legitimate or does it just redirect you to another site? If the link is something like "sitename.com/submityouresume.asp". Check the main website by taking off the "submityourresume.asp" and search the "sitename.com" to see what the website is really about. If it is bogus it will have nothing to do with the job offer or the company.
  5. Never pay money for anything. Never give your credit card or bank account info. Never open a bank account for a foreign company!

How are the Craigslist Scammers Making Money?

I figured out a few ways but I am sure there are many, many more!

  1. When they send you to site that asks you for a membership the site they send you to is usually a job listing site that promises you more job listings if you subscribe. When you subscribe the sender will make affiliate money or get free traffic to their website.
  2. A bogus Government Job site that is all Google Adsense ads or affiliate links that takes you nowhere and finds you no job! They make money every time you click in frustration. They also make money if you click an affiliate link and sign up or subscribe to a service.
  3. A creative person came up with idea of having their job candidates sign up for a web training call using a web-conferencing services that pays for every person who signs up. This person will get paid if you follow her instructions to sign up for the web call. In the case that I found they get $3 for every person that signs up for a 14 day trial and another dollar amount if they actually sign up. This "company" then delays the call so you are forced to hang on to the service and pay for it - allowing them to make more money from you.
  4. Foreign countries looking for Assistants in the United States that are honest! They promise you the moon and the stars but really just want you to open a bank account - collect checks (that will eventually bounce) and make payments. You make the payments thinking the money is really there and then the check bounces. Because it is overseas you are stuck and liable for the money!!
  5. This isn't so much a scam but is misleading and happens even in newspapers - a great job position is advertised but it may not really exist. It actually hooks you up with a headhunter who will offer you lower paying jobs down-playing your experience or credentials.
  6. Postal Service Jobs post with promises of high pay. The problem is you have to buy the test and course materials to be able to apply for these jobs. This is from a company not affiliated with the U.S. Post Office. They do tell you that but are quick to take your money for something that is actually free.
  7. Very scary - although I never ran into this - if you think you have a legitimate job and supply them with a W-4 that has your personal information including your social security number. Could a job scam post lead to identity theft? Probably... so beware!

Update 2015: New Scams Found!

"Sell on eBay"

When I first saw the ads for people to sell on eBay I thought "wow! I can do that!". Then I thought, "Wait....why can't they just do that...". In one ad the guy said he went over his quota on ebay and couldn't be bothered opening a new account BUT was willing to give you half of his profits for using your account. Interesting isn't it?

I imagined how this would work. They give you the ad and pictures to place on ebay (doing all of the work for you) and you place the listing under your account. Someone buys the item and you get paid in your Paypal account. The person says they shipped the item and you give them 50% of the profit. I imagine they they never ship anything or if they do it is crap. You then get a return request or a complaint and ultimately have to refund the full amount of the listing. The other person is long gone with 50% of the "profits" and you are left owing money. Sound like a situation you want to be in.... I don't think so. In summary...if it sounds too good to be true ...it is. Simple as that.

Example:

Ebay and Amazon Sellers Wanted

Compensation: Up to 40% of Profits We are a Wholesale Distributor of Cellular Phones, Electronics, and Accessories, looking for qualified sellers to list our products from home. Make UP TO 40% of the profits working from home. We supply the inventory, distribute and fulfill all orders. Perfect for full time or for making extra income in your spare time.

We carry Iphone, Android, other Cellular Phones, and accessories. Must have your own Ebay and Amazon accounts.

Serious replies only. E-mail or call during business hours - 10AM to 6PM Monday through Friday

Create Amazon Reviews

This is probably an ethical question rather than a concern about being scammed. You are being paid a small sum to be scammed of your morals. In these ads people would like you to write reviews for various items and they will pay you per each review. Assuming they actually do pay you. Huh? How do you write a good review for something you haven't seen, used or no nothing about? I imagine you are just writing crap. Great....that is what we need more crap online and bogus reviews. You don't want to be a part of this.

Secret Shoppers, Mystery Shoppers, Online Surveys, Paid to Click on Ads or Shop Online

I found a number of ads telling you about ways to make money online when AGAIN they are just affiliate links or links that serve them and not you. Note the examples below. They are coming pay per click sites that anyone can access. Are they really hiring you to do a job? No these people are just using the free Craigslist posting to promote their link which gets them points on the site or money for each sign up. Don't waste your time on these.

Examples:

Experienced Mystery Shopper

Compensation: $25.00 - $50.00 per audit plus reimbursement A mystery shopper is a person who visits an establishment (typically a retail store, bank, restaurant or other such places where the public does business) for the purpose of observing and measuring customer service, product quality and the environment of the establishment in general. Pay rates range between $25.00 - $50.00 per audit plus reimbursement for expenses incurred while performing the audit.

Please respond if you are interested and provide name, city of residence, email address, cell phone number, and indicate whether or not you have Mystery Shopping experience.

My Review:

1. This company does not exist.

2. There are other people talking on the web about whether this offer is real.

3. The test files that she attached to the email are ridiculous. Very simple and the most bogus test you can imagine. A moron could complete it. No real company would have such a simple test.

4. The link in the email is a redirected affiliate link that tells you she makes money from the referral in some way. In this case she gets $3 if I sign up for the free trial and more after the 14 day trial period if I pay for a month's subscription.

5. The parent link to this website has nothing to do with security.

TOTALLY BOGUS!!

Identity Theft Info from www.bbbonline.org

What does the identity thief want?
Simply put, the thief wants to become you - and the better you look on paper, the more likely you are to be a target. There are an almost infinite number of ways for a thief to steal your identity; we'll discuss the most common ones here. But everything starts with the thief's ability to get access to certain key pieces of information that belong to you. Here's just a few things the thief is looking for:

  • Your Social Security Card
  • Your Driver's License
  • Your account number (bank, credit card and others), PIN(s) and passwords

Where does the identity thief find these?
In the real world, the answers to this question range from the absolutely obvious to the very unusual. Here are just some of the sources a thief may go to obtain your personal information:

  • Your wallet or purse. Take just a moment right now to take out your wallet or open your purse. Imagine that you were up to no good. What could you do with the contents? While you probably don't have an excessive amount of cash, most of us have a great deal of personal information packed into this relatively small space. How many credit cards are you carrying? Do you have bank PINs jotted down to jog your memory? How about your health insurance ID card? Voter registration card? Driver's license, registration and auto insurance card? Frequent flyer or frequent guest cards? Car rental premium cards? Is your Social Security number on one or more of the documents?
  • Your mailbox. In the wrong hands, your incoming mail can be a treasure trove of information about you. A bill from your credit card company, a statement from your checking account, an unsolicited offer of a new, pre-approved credit card (complete with application). And your outgoing mail may include personal checks you are sending to pay bills (containing your routing and checking account numbers). If you don't have a locked mailbox for incoming and outgoing mail, you are vulnerable.
  • Your glove compartment. Some people's auto glove compartment contains their owner's manual, and not much more. For other people, it's a mobile filing cabinet, containing things like vehicle registrations, insurance cards, old bills, credit card receipts. If you left your car unlocked and someone got inside, how much personal information about you could they discover?
  • Your trash. Because people find it hard to believe that anyone would want to pour through garbage cans, they throw away the darndest things - things like unsolicited credit card applications, old bills, expired credit cards, unused checking account deposit slips and countless other papers. So, for the identity thief, a bit of "dumpster diving" can provide a rich harvest of personal information - information that can be used to become you.
  • You. Sometimes, you can be your own worst enemy. Simply put, the easiest way for a thief to steal your identity is to ask you for it. Posing as your bank, or your insurance company, or your doctor's office, the thief calls you on the telephone, gives you a plausible story and asks you for key pieces of personal information. This practice is called "pretexting", and you can learn more about the practice from the Federal Trade Commission.

How are these used?
The short answer is, "if you can dream it, the identity thief can - and probably has - done it. Here's just a short list of some of the things that identity thieves have done with the information and documents they've acquired:

  • Use your credit card(s) to go on a buying spree, purchasing major items like computers and other electronic devices that can be easily sold.
  • Open new credit card accounts, using your name, date of birth and Social Security number.
  • Change the mailing address on your existing credit card account.
  • Buy cars and take out the auto loans in your name.
  • Establish telephone or wireless phone service in your name.
  • Counterfeit checks or debit cards, and drain your bank account.
  • Open a bank account in your name and write bad checks on that account.
  • File for bankruptcy under your name to avoid paying debts they've incurred, or to avoid eviction.
  • Apply for a job under your name.
  • Give your name to the police during an arrest. When they are released - and if they don't show up for their court date - an arrest warrant could be issued in your name.

Craigslist PHISHING for Login Info Attempt

Just when I thought I couldn't be fooled by Phishing attempts... this one tricked me so I want to share it with you. I assume they just want my Craigslist login information so they can use it to scam people and not be traced.

I was fooled by the first email because I had just posted an ad and the email said that my ad had been flagged (see below). I thought it was strange that it did not come to the same email that my account is listed with - rather the email I had listed in the ad. That was my first clue. I actually clicked on the link and didn't notice that the website had changed and wasn't the Craigslist link that was displayed. I entered my login and password and then turned pale when I saw that it took me to some bogus Craigslist page. I quickly logged into the REAL Craigslist and changed my password as quickly as I could. THANKFULLY I got to it before they did!

I proceeded to get 2 more emails saying my ad was flagged. I deleted them. The funny part is -- later in the day I got another email saying that a foreign IP address was attempting to log into my account and that I should click on their "Terms of Use" link or my account would be suspended. I had to laugh because they must have realized that I logged in but now the password that I inputted doesn't work....very persistent !!!

I lost 12.500$$ to someone who offered me a fake job on indeed, Interviews and all. I borrowed this money hoping for a better life so I was terribly hurt when I discovered I was scammed. I started researching how to get it back and that’s when I met Adrian, the recovery agent. I told him all that happened and I swear this guy got my money back plus some for the fees even! Changed my life. If you need such help, get at littlegreenman93 ATgmaildotcom. You are welcome

Is this a scam? Thanks in advance for your advice!

AnonymousArtist on September 20, 2017:

I am overly cautious about scams because my Identity was stolen 10 years ago. Supposedly a trojan horse on my computer from an email sent by a family member or something. Anyway, I am unemployed and I just recently applied for a job posting on Craigslist in my city but after sending my cover letter and resume, I am thinking that I have been scammed. I am just not sure what to do now. This was the job posting:

"Production Artist

Production artist needed to scan paper items for auction. Part time contract position, could lead to full time. $12-15/hour depending on experience. Photoshop experience a must. Please email cover letter and resume."

I am a commercial artist and photographer so this sounded legit until after sending my resume and getting no response then I had "buyer's remorse". I shouldn't have applied because they gave no details or location and now I see it is very generic other than mentioning auction, photoshop and scanning.

My question is what to do now? Can anything be done? What can they use my resume and info for? I have too many questions and I couldn't quite find answers in this article so I thought I should put it out there. The posting has since been taken down but I have a PDF of the ad so is there anything I should do from here. Any helpful advice? I have learned my lesson but now I need to protect myself for what could come next. I would appreciate any advice the community can offer.

Alexander Silvius from Portland, Oregon on April 24, 2017:

Please note that real job search sites also have been invaded by fakers. I apply regularly on Indeed.com, and have been getting junk mail since I started. Some of these junk emails even matched the terminology of some of the jobs I applied for, so it wasn't hard to figure out what was going on.

It is always prudent to verify the job you apply for anywhere is a legitimate business that actually exists. I hate knowing I have sent all of my personal information to some bozo the clown who just uses it to insult me with fake offers or spam.

One thing I do with one type of resume is just to list my name and email and phone number. This way they don't have my address at least. But that is specifically for IT jobs and I don't know if that is acceptable for more regular job searches.

The Website stated the following:

APPLICATION FORM

Hello,

I am writing in response to your interest on my Craigslist post . You will work from home for only 3 hour per day for a basic wages of $600 per week. You need to go through my introductory message:

I am Roberto Garcia a Successful Entrepreneur, investor and a research journalist .I travel a lot, within and outside the US working on various independent projects, this is why I need a Receptionist Assistance, to keep up with all of my activities especially when i travel abroad.The name of the company is Zion PNT limited Company, and it's a Private Developed and well organized Company.Please note that you are being hired only on a personal level. All correspondences would be made and promptly reported to me personally. The position is part time and home-based meaning you can work most times from your home as long as you have a regular Internet access. You are also hired on a trial basis for now until we are able to see how well we fit in, this however does not affect your weekly wage.Most of your activities will be carried out locally and most official packages will be delivered via posts. You will be actively involved in my personal, business and financial life. In summary, your activities as my assistant amongst other things will include;

* A personal reminder for Schedules, programs, flights and keeping me up to date with them as they come up.

* Carrying out specific projects and research.

* Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf.

* Handling and monitoring financial activities.

* Processing and taking charge of weekly payments and purchases.

* General clerical activities.

Basic wage is $600 a week. Any extra personal expenses (transport,gas,etc) incurred by you while on an errand or otherwise will also be reimbursed by me at the end of each working Month.This position is very flexible and it is difficult judging the exact number of hours you will be doing,just bear it in mind that there will be busier weeks than others with a steady pay. Working with me is basically about instructions and following them . There is also a very sensitive issue on trust, dedication and accountability which I believe will resolve itself as time goes on.This is only an introductory e-mail, as time goes on we should be able to arrange a proper meeting to get things started officially. I am currently in Canada, for business .However, I do have a number of work you can get done, prior to my arrival.Due to the excessive number of responses to my Ad, do provide the following details about yourself for my personal record update and to filter applicants;

I hope you can be available for me immediately before I arrive, it certainly can act as a stable foundation to our impending working relationship.

Regards,

Roberto Garcia.

Is this a Scam?

Dolores Ninerell (author) from Mount Laurel, NJ on August 08, 2016:

They had me at "Hello , Hope you're fine today?

here, hiring manager ."

Who talks like that? Sounds like an out of country scam to me.

Aura on June 02, 2016:

Does this sound legitimate? I erase my name and his name and co. name. Not sure it is a scam.

Hello , Hope you're fine today?

here, hiring manager . Thanks for your interest in the Part time / Full Time Payroll position we have on Craigslist. I will like to say sorry for the late response. I've been sick and had to attend doctors appointment . Having looked into your resume, I will like to say you have all it takes to do the job because what you have there suited and meet up with our basic requirements as i was being told by the Junior hiring manager in person on Mr Dallas Smith that he spoke to you on phone regarding the position.

In addition, I will want to believe you will be an asset to the company, bringing your experience and organizational skills as well as your easy going personality. Moreover, this is a part time home base job. Which I believe will not in any way affect or hinder your present job. As you will be working 3-4hrs each day of your duty, which are Mon, Wed and Friday.

Also, you may choose morning or evening to do the job. Principally, your job for now is to only make the payroll checks and while i take care of the USPS labels online for you. After I finish creating the labels, I will attach the labels to an email for the payee names you will be writing checks for and email them to you. So all you will have to do is to print them out (USPS LABELS)and glue on each envelop for drop off at any nearby USPS drop boxes.

Also, you will be getting few supplies yourself, but reimburse of anything you purchased for the job is guaranteed. The check writing software will be provided to you, so there is no need of getting that, but only the paper check and the printer to use for the check printing. However, you can confirm if your printer is compatible with check printing and can work with a magnetic ink Micr, which will make you spend nothing to start. Importantly, we will want the jobs to get started as soon as possible.

Also, salaries are below enumerated :

1) Bi weekly : $550

2) Monthly : $1200

This depends on your choice, and you shall be receiving it through cash, via WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER/MONEY GRAM or Bank transfer at any bank of your choice .

I will appreciate your quick response to this, as am starting to receiving emails from other interested parties as well.

If you will not mind, we can talk through text 323 285 9701 sometime today for a better explanation and perhaps put you through on how to use the check writing software as soon as you are ready.

Hope to read from you and have a wonderful Day

Thank you

Dear Mr.

Thank you for your email. Where is this company located? What is your company website? Why did you email me with a personal email and not the company email? You do not interview the candidates face to face? Are you hiring people to do payroll without any payroll experience? If you want me to work for you, you will have to provide me with everything I need to do the job.

Sincerely,

Alexander Silvius from Portland, Oregon on September 09, 2015:

I enjoyed reading this and it gave me the information I needed. A few years ago, I quit a good paying job to save my mental health - so I started looking for a full time job and responded to numerous CL job postings. I got zero responses to the resumes I painstakingly redesigned for each offer, but I did however get lots of scam emails and scam texts. It took me a while to put two and two together and when I finally did, I was so angry that people would actually take advantage of my time when I desperately needed a job to pay MY bills.

Fast forward a few years and I am looking for a new job utilizing my skills as an overhead crane operator. I see a decent number of jobs from time to time that really look legitimate, the terminology sounds right, the pay matches the industry standard and so on. Nothing and I mean NOTHING looks out of place - except, they do not list their company name, website, phone number or address, absolutely zero identifying information and they just want me to send all of my info like a dummy.

Sadly, there are likely a few legitimate ads, and as I send tentative inquiries with resumes tailore to give them the information they need without giving away personal info, politely asking for some sort of confirmation, those few legitimate companies will be responding to plenty of other resumes not hassling them with the need for verification and my inquiry will be ignored.

But you know what? Better I use my time efficiently and treat these transactions with the respect they deserve and if I get a positive hit, it will be all the better because that employer may be more inclined to care about their employees needs and wants.

Who knows. In any case, thank you for laying out the facts and some common sense. I was on the fence about whether to send my complete resume to these likely scammers and now I know not to give them anything except a chance for me to prove they are real. There is Google, phone books, a polite phone inquiry or a dilligent company website search that will reveal if they are really looking to hire people for the positions advertised on CL.

Thank you so much for writing this article ~ and everyone's comments! What a relief that I'm not the only one going through this experience (although I am sorry that all the previous people before me in these comments had to experience this horrible ordeal as well as others). After almost 2 years, I am now back looking for a FT job in the Assist Admin/Office field. I thought that Craigslist would be a great start considering that's where I found my last job ~ however, 2 years ago ~ I would have never thought to use Craigslist to look for work, it was my boyfriend who suggested for me to look there. I was looking at every other job search engine with no luck. So, I took his advice, and tried Craigslist. Within sending 6 resumes, I landed my former job ~ that was then, let's talk about now. I have put out at least 30+ resumes in the past week on Craigslist ~ and the responses I have gotten back are nothing compared to the ones I received 2 years ago. They're more like the ones that are previously noted above. Some are asking me for a credit report ~ others are telling me that they are on a business trip, therefore I can start now and will get paid $300/wk (but, need some info first) ~ etc. It seems like every single job posting I click on, is a scam ~ it's gotten so bad, I don't even know who's even real or fake anymore. I mean it's pretty sad when I'm scared to even send any kind of response to them now ~ because now, I'm getting my inbox just filled with all kinds of things; like ~ them having a check ready to deposit for me in my bank acct, when would I like to start my new job, etc. Of course, I didn't give them a credit report or give them my information ~ but, still it was a waste of my time and effort on perfecting my cover letter for these scammers. Now, it's a waste of my valuable time trying to figure out if they are a legit company or not. It's a lose-lose situation for all of us trying to look for a good job in this economy these days. I'm going to take the advice you and others gave though ~ asking specific questions about the job first (who, what, where) BEFORE I waste anymore of my time proceeding to move forward with my resume, and looking at their specific email address. I am just upset that I sent so many resumes, before realizing just how many scammers are truly out there on Craigslist. Thank you and everyone else on here again, for making me aware that I need to be more careful when sending my resume out, and some tips I should use before wasting anymore of my time on their bogus job postings. It is very much appreciated! :)

Trying to find a REAL job these days when you are older and were downsized is a nightmare. Online applications screen you out, so you try stuff like Craigslist, hoping to find an opportunity that isn't bogus. It is maddening because all you want is to work, not be SCAMMED. Everyone tells you there is a hidden job market, but I certainly can't "find" it. HR is a joke for those older, they will say you aren't qualified but then you see the SAME jobs being advertised until filled. Everyone says be "creative" you will find a job that way. All I have found is more scammers trying to sign me up for their schemes, ugh. I knew I had scammers, when I just put a limited amount of info on a CL response, and I got your resume is EXACTLY what we are seeking. I didn't SEND a resume, I asked questions about WHERE the job was, WHO the company was...And it is true, if they are using gmail as email, probably not a real company.

I when i was younger about 5 years ago was scammed i quickly figured out it was a scam and blocked the phone number im just confused on what the end game is to this scam. Its the

Wine Club Hostess/Cocktail Waitress at a "private wine club" with "multiple franchises throughout southern california" it claims to be perfect for college girls and young girls needing money. Says to contact Missie Adams or Jim everytime with a Los Angeles number in starting with area code 310 (Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Culver City). Being 20 years old and a broke college girl in the height of the recession it seemed perfect. but when i called i got a guy sounding around his 50s. at first seemed genuinely legin then suddenly he started talking extremely explicit and just dirty it repulsed me so i blocked the number and hung up. Its listed through a company called "Classy Club Jobs" and posted all over the craigslist in the US. im just wondering what the heck is the point? i was thankfully never asked any personal identity questions. i find it creepy and think maybe this person is a way to get girls in the sex trade. he sounded like a really weird rich dude white pimp sugary daddy type. it was beyond creepy.

Joy on April 03, 2015:

Many people want to make money at home and they want to find a work at home job to do it with. Ultimately what happens is they become frustrated as they search from website to website looking for the right job. This brings up the question, why are work at home jobs so hard to find? In this article we will take an honest look at this problem.

1. First of all you should know that most of the opportunities to work at home are not actually paid jobs. This is true because most employers do not know you and have no control over the work environment when you do it from the comfort of your own home.

If you realistically think about this, why would someone pay you an hourly rate when they do not know if you are really working or not? Therefore many of the opportunities to work at home are actually in the form of business opportunities where you work for yourself.

2. There really are some companies looking for people to work from home. This phenomenon is known as telecommuting and does provide an opportunity for people with legitimate skills to get paid working from home.

This benefits both the company and the worker because the business does not need to provide a space for you to work from, and as an employee you do not have to get up and drive to work every day.

Many companies now will offer work at home jobs that include an hourly rate and benefits. These benefits can include paid vacation, retirement plan, and health insurance.

One such website or you can visit is Tjobs.com. They match employers looking for workers with employees who are looking for opportunities to telecommute. This works out very well for people who have skills such as sales, customer service, website design, and other categories.

3. Another thing I want to talk about is websites that present themselves as work at home jobs doing data entry, taking paid surveys, and typing at home. Generally these websites are trying to sell you information on how to get involved in this type of work.

There are companies who will pay you for your opinion, or to do data entry and typing. The websites that are selling you the information deserve to be paid because they have taken the time to develop a list of companies for you to contact.

In the future work at home jobs will become more readily available. Until that point you need to be conscious and only deal with reputable companies before spending any of your hard earned money.

I wanted to add re: the Ebay/etc sales...

Every time I've come across those, what has tipped me off is that they want me to GET STARTED NOW. They won't let me discuss pay or any processes. You respond to the ad, they start pushing. If you push back at all to ask any questions, they stop responding. Basically, you're not the victim they're looking for.

I'd recommend adding pushiness to the red flags. I've never had a legitimate job or opportunity that wasn't willing to answer questions. Shouldn't a legit opportunity want to make sure you're not going to run off with their money? If I had $400 autographed basketballs to sell, I'd want to be sure that the 3rd party selling them wasn't, you know, previously charged with theft or embezzlement, at least. I'd want to interview them.

Thank you so much for this post! I replied to a job on craigslist and they responded saying they had "reviewed my application" within 12 hours of me sending it (on a Sunday!). In their reply they wanted me to do a "free" credit score check, and after looking into that website I found that it isn't free at all but charges $30 a month. After I read your article I searched some more and found the same exact job description posted in several cities but couldn't find anything on the actual company. Thanks again for the tips and preventing me from getting scammed!

Sue on July 25, 2012:

Does anyone know what the scammer does with the personal information? You see, my boyfriend applied for a receptionist position on craigslist and the scammer responded by saying that his application stood out and he had some additional questions before the interview. The scammer got his address, phone, and email (already on his resumer that he sent for the job) but then also asked for his age and sex. My boyfriend filled out the survey and was hired in about 10 minutes, leading him to realize it was a scam. The scammer doesn't have his social security or bank account, but what kind of fraud does he plan to do with all of his contact information as well as demographic information? We are going to be viligant about it in the coming weeks. Thanks for the info!

Shot fired at Savannah Mall; Craigslist transaction gone awry

(Courtesy: American Deli Savannah Mall-surveillance video)

SAVANNAH, Ga.- SCMPD confirms the victim of an attempted robbery fired a shot in the parking lot of Savannah Mall outside the food court. The robbery was due to a Craiglist’s transaction gone awry.

According to Savannah Mall General Manager, the incident took place just before 2 p.m. when Nicholas Rivera, 28 met another man for a Craigslist transaction of a laptop computer. The unidentified suspect took the computer and ran out of the mall with Rivera chasing him.

Once outside police said Rivera fired a warning shot into the air and then continued following the suspect when he entered a burgundy sedan with at least three other occupants. The sedan fled toward Highway 204.

The robbery suspect is described as a black male with a dark complexion, possibly in his late teens to early 20’s. The suspect was clean-shaven with his hair styled in twists or a short afro. During the incident he wore a black jacket and blue jeans. No charges have been filed at this time.

Anyone with information on this case should call CrimeStoppers at (912) 234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

SCMPD urges citizens to make safety the highest priority when buying and selling goods advertised online. The public is reminded of the following safety tips:

  • Utilize police precincts as meeting places.
  • Avoid meeting to buy or sell items alone.
  • Always advise a friend or loved one of your plans to buy or sell items.
  • Arrive early and position yourself to observe and evaluate your surroundings and individuals you are scheduled to meet. If something makes you uneasy, leave immediately.
  • Buyers and sellers always should meet in public highly populated places during daylight or business hours.
  • Always take a working cellular phone to alert police of emergencies.
  • Never invite strangers into your home and avoid entering their residences.
  • Avoid posting personal information online.
  • Have several adults present when selling heavy items that are difficult to remove from your home.
  • Keep valuables out of view.
  • Be leery of purchasers attempting to use cashier’s check from out-of-state or outside of the country. These may be counterfeit.

Police hunting female suspected Savannah Craigslist robber

Savannah-Chatham police detectives have filed warrants against a Savannah woman suspected in two robberies tied to Craigslist postings.

Police are asking the public for help locating 35-year-old Jessica V. Rodriguez, said Julian Miller, police spokesman. Rodriguez has been charged with armed robbery, hijacking of a motor vehicle and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. A warrant against her also has been filed for failure to appear in Chatham County State Court.

Miller described her as a black female, about 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds. She previously lived in a rooming house on the 500 block of West 38th Street.

The warrants stem from two robberies in September in which couples were robbed after meeting a young female to purchase vehicles listed on the web site. In each case, Miller said, the couples arranged to inspect vehicles and were robbed either during the inspection or shortly afterward.

Both vehicles posted on Craigslist had been reported stolen about a week before the robberies, Miller added.

Detectives also are seeking the public's help in identifying and locating four black males wanted for questioning in the case. The men included a taller, lighter-complexioned male with long dreads who is known to wear a lighter colored baseball cap with an "A" on the bill; a second with a very short hair style; and two shorter males with darker complexions.

The men, Miller said, were all caught on surveillance video inside a store where detectives had been led. They are each wanted for questioning.

Anyone with information on the case or the location of Jessica Rodriguez is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 912-234-2020 or text CRIMES (274637) using the keyword CSTOP2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward. Tipsters can also call 912-651-6694.

Detectives advise anyone answering advertisements, such as on Craigslist, insist they meet in a well-populated location and do not use cash. Miller said people should ask for a copy of the title before meeting the sellers and arrange for the transaction to be completed at a later time, rather than in an isolated area. Those who do meet sellers in isolated areas should drive to another location before returning home.
